Voltron / Go Lion Origin Story

I see the main difference between Voltron and Golion here is priorities. Voltron was a controlled robot used as a defensive weapon only,not an attacking mechanism. Golion on the other hand seems to be a sentient robot with a streak of arrogance. And the story of the queen of the universe separating Golion into different parts was part of the storyline altered in Voltron where Haggar disguised herself and cursed Voltron.

What I hated about this part of Voltron wasn't the origin, but the fact that the young explorers needed this backstory explained to them later by Allura's guardian later on, even though Keith seemed to know the whole story at this point (first ep, I believe).

No matter what u think of wep's version of the show. The Undeniable fact remains. NO ONE HERE IN America, would even know there ever was a show called GoLion had it not been for WEP's Voltron. Think about it, GoLion (in it's original form) has only been a big thing here now BECAUSE of The interest in Voltron. What WEP did with show may suck, I agree, however it was needed for it to be aired on US TV. & If it hadn't been aiored on tv here, How many of you would even know about it either way

The only other Super Robot anime that is darker than Golion is Zambot 3. That series had balls because major characters die and the heroes are hated by the people that they protect due to the amount of damage, death, and atrocities. The ending itself is a real shocker as it shows the bad guys are more than they seem.

people need to face it.go-lion is better than voltron.it doesn't hold up too well to me.and to those who are confused about go-lion and voltron,it's understandable.go-lion had to be edited.like gum gm said,it was brtual and the show actually has an ending.i don't think voltron.world events opt to make toei make 50 more epsiodes for the series which still didn't bring a conclusion.go-lion does it in 50+ episodes

@darkprince26 so the american version kept the ending open for further ideas, so what? Voltron is still better than GoLion by far. GoLion is good But it doesn't even come close to Voltron. Yes that's my opinion, and that of many people i know as well

on a scale of 1-10 GoLion gets a 3.5 while Voltron gets a 8.5.

However, I've been watching golion episodes more since i wrote most of the comments here and i upgrade my rating of golion from the previous jokingly applied 3.5 to about 7 or 8 lol. Sewriously though, Golion is pretty good if you can get used to the english subtitles constantly.

@DAOW17 Search Golion Episode 52. I think it's Burn Galra Castle or something like that. It's just the original ending and doesn't have the Voltron ending. Sincline/Lotor falls to his death but the Voltron (Edited) version says that he survived the fall.

Go-Lion was the most brutal classic anime and was heavily cut and turned into Voltron when it came to the states. Even in the opening theme the Green Lion is smashing through trees while running. I own the entire Go-Lion series and will never regret purchasing the DVD's.

I was always fasinated by the idea Voltron was sentient and didn't need drivers. The origin in either version aludes to this, but GoLion makes it cooler in that Voltron is not just self aware, but begins to get corrupted by his own greatness.

He is split up to teach him a lesson. Perhaps needing people to control him would be part of his punishment.

It's kinda like he died that day. His body and its power stripped of the soul and left for others to control for the side of good.

@raith0818 No! the way the Japanese version explains it as if Golion was always evil that the only thing that he sought were battles to prove his powers. The Goddess of the universe herself asks him why doesn't he use his powers for good instead of attacking monsters that he came across.

@HatakeWolf I wont pretend I know the Japanese story, but if Voltron was always evil, seems he would be out conquering peaceful worlds instead battling ugly monsters. The goddess asks why he doesn't use his power for "peace" not "good". If peace = good and battle = evil, that's not a very good argument she is using. Like saying pretty = good and ugly = evil. Not quite true.

If Voltron was evil, that's a cool story, but i'd like to know what evil he did. Did he destroy an innocent planet?

@raith0818 Think of it like this, Voltron was out fighting just for the sake of fighting. The monsters that you saw him destroy were probably minding their own business before they were attacked by Voltron. Voltron started believing his own hype and thought he was badass. He made the mistake of challenging someone out of his league.

Also, it's too bad none of the cool Japanese musical score was kept in Voltron.

I got (online from Amazon) all three of the GoLion boxsets, and yes, they indeed thankfully have the English subs as seen in this clip. It was distributed by Media Blasters in conjunction with Anime Works.

I must say it is WELL worth owning, and I was happy to see this on a friend's Favorites. Also, none of the English language voice actors had anything to do with King of Beasts: GoLion (FiveLion), just to let ya know. hope I helped!

This is actually the far darker scenario, if you think about it. Inappropriate ' Angelic visuals ' and all. Heh. The Golion one looks more like a robotized Gospel Lenten special; which also has it's own ' creepy ' going on.

They're more than VERY different; they're COMPLETELY different. They're not the same show. Voltron used the same animation as GoLion, but other than that, they're unrelated.

Cool. It's well worth owning. GoLion volume 1#and 2# are already out for us Region-1 North Americans, and it's well worth owning. Volume 3# will be avilable to pre-order soon enough.

It's a fine sentai/mecha robot series, and a must own for all of us who also have the Voltron sets.

Just one gribe: Why did they have the DVD release name as Beast King when the full name of the series is Hundred Beast King: GoLion? Also, I hope Media Blasters releases the original Diarugger XV as well! :D

It's interesting to note that the Goddess of the Universe shows up in a later GoLion episode, and in the Voltron version of that episode they DON'T claim it's Haggar in disguise; it's a real goddess. So maybe Haggar based her disguise on the real Goddess?

I have wach the the Jap Voltron(Golion) dvd,and Hagar(Honerva in japan) has nothing to do with the Goddess and ofcors she wasnt the one who brught Voltron in 5 lions.

And about the episode wihch the Goddess apear I havent reach it yet,its on 3rd volume I have 1st and 2nd volume of Golion.

But The Goddess Of The Universe is not related with Hagar in any way

Not necessarily. As I've said in other posts, we don't know why those monsters were trying to kill GoLion. Maybe he attacked them first and they were just retaliating. Maybe he was so eager to use his power that he went out and randomly started killing aliens without provocation. If that's the case, then when the Goddess stopped him, she was stopping a serial killer.

I have wach Golion and all we know is at that clip,and the later episode it doesnt say anything of Voltron's past or how he been created :(.

But in the episode of Wolf Planet(Captive Comet), the Goddes encourege Voltron to stand up and move on its own and Kieth(Kogane) was suprised of seeing Voltron(Golion) moving on its own,and when he left the Wolf Planet Voltron/Goilon call laoudly "GOOOOLIIION".

Well it looks like he is related with the Goddess somehow if you ask me.
