you will always be gentle on our minds and ears John...God bless your spirit and heritage left...got to see him perform in 1976..WOW, and those "clogging shoes"...talk about a one-man- band....FABULOUS
I was born and raised in the boston area and never got much exposure to this kind of music. I thank my extended family from the west for introducing me to John Hartford awhile back. Still sad he is no longer with us. He is awesome. One of those rare talents that you never get sick of.
You are so missed John Hartford...Is there a better song ever been written? If that doesn't make you smile and cry at the same time you aren't human...PEACE
Mike Compton ... listen to the licks ... unless Bill Monroe is resurected ... actually ... mike compton sound like himself ... kinda like Bill Monroe ... nice and yummy like a bowl full of haloween candy ... snickers and butterfingers yea yea kicks kicks
Thank you so much for leaving all your pearls before you had to go ....You are my favorite riverboat captain and forever will be gentle on my mind...and tears of joy will help me carry on thru this life. All thanks to you and you're positive messages. You're the man John. Save a place for me there in heaven....I will be happy with a back row seat.
Lovely!! Hey steam powered aeroplane etc. Loved the man!!! All he did and all he sang about! I have to go to work in tall buildings!! Anyone know that song? I sing it to myself sometimes when I go to work sometimes. By the way, don't leave your records in the sun. You know what happens!!!
try as they will, this tune is cursed with heavy humidity. try as you will. cursed with heavy humidity. less humidity means more suspandu.. it means more sustain of the note..
This song always brings my mind to a lost soulmate and love whose memories still pull at the emotional strings of my heart. It is a bittersweet. Remembering the joy and pain of a lost love. God bless her where ever she is now.
Some years ago a self-appointed jury named John Lennon's In My lIfe as the greatest song ever written. In my opinion, as much as I respect the Beatles and their contribution to music, John Hartford wrote the all-time classic in Gentle On My Mind.
Many years ago I watched a special with john Hartford and Jo-El Sonnier , talk about spectacular, their breathtaking performances left a permanent mark in my memory and in my heart, simply awesome they both were, and these many years later, my opinion is still the same, then , now , and forever American entertainers Ne Plus Ultra , like Woody, Hank, and Willie !!!!
Does anyone happen to have the ive for tv version of this song, where JH is joined by other c&w luminaries. Before he sings he gives a brief background to the song, and laughs about how well it rewarded him financially. It used to be up on youtube but I can no longer find it. Any pointers greatly appreciated.
This is the best version I've ever heard, out of a thousand outstanding renditions. A thousand years from now you will be able to hear people sing this song.
I seriously doubt you could play like that drunk. He does sound a little nasal but hey - he always did. This is a knockout version - thanks for the post.
I just was reminded by my PBS station playing Jamie singing "Gentle n my Mind" how much I used to LOVE john Hartford when I was a kid watching the Glen Campbell show- J.H. seemed the true artist. kerry
I saw John Hartford in the Nashville airport with his banjo and wanted to say something reasonable if i got a chance. It happened that we came face to face at one point and I said. Thank you so much for all your music.
great version of a great song....however: I suppose I might be the only person who prefers the unudulterated version of jh. With all due respect to those who like the "later" john and all respect to jh's memory, I find his adoption of this character image somewhat disconcerting. Check out the "older" jh...especially the album, "Earthwords and Music" (his first)when he was a pure songwriter and see what you think. (this also was the album that debuted "GOMM")

This is a great version of a great song. It's about the fanciest song I know how to play - but boy, when I hear the beautiful hold JH had on the rhythm of this tune I recognise that I can't play it at all. Do you know where and when this was recorded, and who is playing with John?
i was at one of Mr Harfords concerts in Asheville NC at the Grey Eagle.
95% of the audience was college age kids nobody as old as me.
the guitarist was a native Ashevillian, Chris was his first name, and Mr Hartford was really energized that night even with the cancer that had raveged his body.
what a wonderful memory of a real ledgend. thanks John...jim
Tanx, This is wonderful! The only version I've ever heard was from that movie a long time ago. Who? Glen Cambell? Naw. I can't think of who but this is much better. What movie was this song in? Tanx, Bluegrassbrown
