@Pwarriors22 it comes from things I care about. I can see something, hear something, or read something and it creates the piece. I try to be open to human emotions. I try to always put myself in other people shoes in order to feel passionate about the subject matter. That helps me a lot.
@Pwarriors22 If you remember why you do whatever you are doing, remember all the people it will effect, and go after it, You'll always shine. Get out there and SHINE!
Took my kids to see you on a field trip last year. In the wake of corrupted state testing, and as our administrators get ready to shove off more unprepared students, I want to thank you so much for saying what needs to be said. I will be here in Baltimore next year doing all that I can, and I expect you will be doing the same. Keep doing the good work.
My kid was in a suburban school and having trouble keeping up because of health problems, so they kept dropping classes she NEEDED.
Then we brought in our social worker who was helping coordinate medical stuff and we got a meeting with her teachers. of ALL her teachers (high school) only TWO showed up and one was from GYM!
They set up an IEP plan but never started using it, I was supposed to only call the counselor for information/help but she wouldn't take my calls, or the calls from the social worker and she wouldn't call back.
the next fall she was just devastated by the idea of going back to that school. So we moved in with elderly relatives to put her in a DIfferent suburbs school system. It was COMPLETELY different, the response to her health issues was "how can we help you."
She wants to go to college, she's picked a major, but has yet to actually sign up for classes or apply for financial aid.
the first school system broke something in her, she can't get up the optimism to take that next step. She feels there are too many holes in the education she got from the first school system.
@LamontCarey1 Oh yeah, and sometimes I feel horribly guilty (or mad again) for not catching this stuff EARLIER myself. There was just so much Ass Coverage going on in the school system.
She's still learning to live with her limitations from her chronic illness (i have the same one, but it didn't get bad till adulthood.). A friend who is an engineer needed a gal friday, so now she has a part time job
Her boss needed someone to translate Engineerese into material he can put on his website or have printed to give to prospective clients. (She's REALLY good at that.)
Both he and others in & outside the immediate family are encouraging her to "just take one class at the Community College and see what happens." So hopefully she'll decide to go back to school, and turn some of her language skills into a living.
Get involved with your child and your child's school so they won't be left behind. We see the grades, but we don't or won't meet the teachers who spend the majority of the time with our kids. If we could get a quarter of the money the government devotes toward wars we shouldn't even be fighting, we would see a major change.
I want MY CHILD left behind if he ain't making the grade...I love this...keep up the great work u are very very talented and we need more people like you =)
Oh yeah, blame the school system for not going to parent/teacher conferences and only checking on how well your kid does when the report card comes around.......scapegoats.....you gotta love'm.
I am from Michigan. I was one of the kids you describe in your poem. It was not until my family became more concerned about my performance in school (report card + parent teacher conference + homework + ect.) that I performed better.
Marvel - first and foremost it is amistake to assume that Lamont is only talking about his own child. Many working parents don't have much of a chance to check up on their children until grades come and isn't the educational system in place to help ensure children receive guidance OUTSIDE of the home? If it's not achieving that then there is no scapegoating. This system is a fucking failure.
Did I hear this on TJMS or Michael Baisden yesterday? As a teacher in a small urban area, I can relate and appreciate. Thanks...keep up the good work.

Every Time I Think About The Poems You Write It Brinqs Tears To My Eyes & It Makes Me Realize That I Sit In Class & I Have Kids Who R Just Like That & U Can See The Look In There Face But They Dont Want To Speak Up About It Because There Gonna Be Embarssed & The Government Isn't Doinq Anythinq In Particular To Help 'Our Kids' In Poverty ! & W. These Pieces You Have Written I Just Enjoy Listeninq To Very Much Good Bless You & Take Care !
Nici thank you so much. Hopefully, we can get the government to take another look at this issue. It's sad that it has to happen to one of their children or grand for some people to care. For instance when a crime happens in some ones community and they say on the news" I couldnt believe something like that happened here". Then they want to work on prevention. Its a shame if it doesnt happen to you , it really didnt happen
Jassy I just experienced this again while monitoring some children taking test. They opened them text books and you can see in their eyes they had no idea what they were looking at! they setting our children up for a life of failure and hard times. I am trying to find out what can be done
on this and confidence and i cant read, but they wasnt trying to hear anything that didnt involve bling, cars, and hoes because heaven forbid they listen to something
daaam this is real,in my eyes you are amazing, because a person who talks about all this and then turn to themselfs, saying i am part of the problem too.....i love you soo much
"I want my child left behind if he ain't makin' the grade."
Amen. I'm a former teacher, and several of my students were passed on from 7th to 9th grade - that's right, skipped two grades - simply because they were 16 years old, which was "socially" inappropriate. Never mind that they couldn't read, write, or add 2 + 2. I think the parents felt they had no say in the matter, so they let it go. But parents DO have a voice - and their involvement in their child's education means everything.
I'm a teacher and three years ago (my first year) our school did that A,B,I system. I hated it! Just like you said, the kids know when they're not learning and we're not doing them any favors by pretending that an I is acceptable. Luckily our principal realized this and we're not using that system anymore.
You are a wonderful talent. I have neveer watched your videos b4 but I am now a fan. A am a poet and one day I hope to be half as good as you are. Thank you for using your gift!
I love this poem. I really liked the ending; it was honest and true from the heart. Makes me question the substance and effectiveness of my own education from the beginning up to now. Very deep, sir. Very deep and true. Much love and respect.
That's really touching. If you read this lamont carey, know that education is very important, and any voices raised in any disadvantaged communities on this matter can make an important difference.
Wow! This really hit home! Brought tears to my eyes! I'm raising my 13 yr old cousin who has a learning disability and it's hard. Thank for speaking my thoughts!
i know mane, lamont, u shoulda went to my skool and told my teachers dat, cuz dats all i got in skool, F's, i ant neva made A's or B's but i still passed, but they stopped when i got to high skool, they kept me in 9th grade 4 times.
wow. Despite that you continue to learn. They have no control over you how. Keep learning and achieving and make them regret that they underestimated you
TRUTH!I Love his work! You spoke what we all feel. What people dont seem to understand is that "no child left behind" was written by bussiness men of fourtune 500 companies. In it they refered to children as "consumers". It wasn't written to ensure everyone gets an education, but more of a how-to guide for schools to receive federal funding. "NO School Left Behind"
It is very shocking! Their whole goal was to get these schools more money because the money would come back to them when the schools spent it. I heard news that now that they are "tweaking" it. Let's see who gets to write it now. I doubt it is going to change by much, and no matter what the businesses win in the end. But yeah research it! It'll amaze you!
We have to figure out the right approach to our children wanting to really learn. if we depend on the school system to totally prepare our children for the future than we have abandon some of our responsibilities as adults, parents, communities, and educators. The children no when they are just being passed. Remember when you took a test, you knew when you failed before you turned it in...LOL. So i don't think it is much different. We have to empower our children
You need to do this poem in all those schools in DC. I had some teachers that would give out the answers to exam questions, because the children had to pass for the school to get funding. Some tell the kids not to take the exams. I think they are purposely trying to dumb our kids down, and discourage teachers who really want to teach. You need to wake ppl up in DC principals, teachers administrators because they sleeping and messing up our kids for a few dollars.
Then empower kids to learn how to be entrepreneurs early on in life. Schools should teach the subject, after all these kids are either going to work for a company (profit or non profit) or create their own path by owning businesses. Let's really teach them real life lessons. Why do we still have to follow the industrial age style of education while we are in digital, service- oriented age?
Good job I like

Keep trying to shine Lamont because by you speaking the truth in your Poems, it is just like you in front of those schools picketing.

"NO School Left Behind"

wow. u r schooling me now. I have to look into that
LamontCarey1 3 years ago

LamontCarey1 3 years ago
You are so right.. and yes I remember thinking like that about tests. LOL.

Want smart education?
Then empower kids to learn how to be entrepreneurs early on in life. Schools should teach the subject, after all these kids are either going to work for a company (profit or non profit) or create their own path by owning businesses. Let's really teach them real life lessons. Why do we still have to follow the industrial age style of education while we are in digital, service- oriented age?
