Why haven't we heard more from Howard Haskin? Because the operatic world cannot fathom or accept a Black man as a heldentenor, that's why. This is in spite of the fact that heldentenors are quite rare. Few singers of any vocal range are equipped to handle the demands of Wagner's music, but opera companies choose to ignore Haskin and I suspect others as well. They need to wake up!
@elainebmack was a big "scandal" Grace Bumbry sung Venus at Tannhaeuser at Bayreuth. If you believe racism was by Germans Wagnerianers (some) you are wrong, most were white French (unbelievable!) and white American (not surprising).
@elainebmack, opera is historically an aspect of European culture, not American. A black male tenor is often better off singing in Europe where he will be hired. America is still somewhat of an outsider to the art of opera; it was born in Europe. Take a look at Simon Estes's success in Europe. They far out-number his successes in America.
@wTrevorh This is true. I would say that most opera singers find their greatest success in Europe because of the number and quality of opera houses. The thing is that whatever the race of the singer, this type of voice is a rare commodity, and once found should never be ignored.
Even his audience there seem out of it. If you couldn't bear the fact, why are they still siting there? Wonderful Singing, Howard!
