Smart guy, but that male ego always gets in the way! May have missed that one great opportunity to make it even bigger, because, I have hardly ever hear of these guy's over the years, yet they were/are terrific!
You did great. I would stiff JC too. What an ASS JC was back then. You did the right thing for me and the bus of us. Thanks. Love you. YOU and your band did a wonderful show at TheArk.org in Ann Arbor Michigan. Super show.
Found it: The Man-Pop Festival was originally scheduled to take place at the outdoor Winnipeg Stadium. However, rain and a malfunctioning PA system forced the organizers to belatedly move the festival into the nearby Winnipeg Arena. This venue had lower capacity than that of the stadium, and when this capacity was reached, some 800 valid ticket holders were refused admission. This caused a near riot at the entrances of the arena, with many of its glass doors being kicked in by angry patrons.
You can't be a has been when you have what you want. Jessie is what he wants to be. A song writer/musician, not a rock star. He lives a quiet comfortable life in a small town, playing his music in small venues when and where he wants. And he is actually a very nice guy.
Young has been, is, and always will be... a has been. He has a history of biting the hand that feeds him. In today's market, he wouldn't get in the door - his attitude precedes him with every step. If anybody's a dick, it's him.
If having Integrity makes one a has-been...I'll take it! Jesse is a very talented musician...Although I attempted to connect with him a few year back musician to musician and got nothing back.
Yeah, Jaymel is wrong. I remember reading the story in Rolling Stone, and I heard an interview with Carson when he said they walked out on him. He tried to blackball them, the dick.
it was 1978 a small club in makawao maui just me n a friend were flying on an once of pure colombian flake..we were making so much noise n going to the head jesse was laughing at us while he was playing...was served a complete gourmet dinner all we ate was couple of strawberrys n a couple bottles of wine...one of my greatest memories
That is really hard to believe. Why would you report heresay instead of stuff from the horses mouth. Even Johnny reported they walked off to Rolling Stone Magazine and he was still pissed right before his death that they would not just do what he said even if he ( johnny) changed his agreement.
@bush1tman Dino Valenti from Quicksilver Messenger Service & for the record these guys r know for more than Get Together by alot of people including me
Carson, and everybody else wants to hear his only hit song, and he says "oh, thats history, we dont want to play that anymore" No wonder he got booted!
This is a very convenient rewriting of history for Mr. Young. I recall that contemporary to the time of the alleged "walk off" there was another version of events reported. It seems that the Youngbloods were rehearsing in the afternoon of the taping and were making demands, as well as being so rude to bandleader Doc Severinsen as well director Bobby Quinn that Carson (who happened to be watching the rehearsal from a live feed on a monitor in his office) went to the studio and threw them out.
Young makes good points:Carson got off a good rip on the group back in the day, but that's showbiz...
On the other hand, I doubt appearing on the "Tonight Show" would have done much for the Youngbloods' career, especially when they demanded cutting out a promo from the new LP...Great interview though, thanks for sharing!
Jessie may have been more popular had he done the show... no wonder they wanted him to play the hit and nothing else.. It is what was selling.. It was a show not a concert.. Dumb choice..

I wouldn't get too carried away with the power of Johnny Carson. If there is a record of him destroying anyone's career, who might that person or band be? You don't exactly enter the realm of rock 'n roll to have a "career." It happens or it doesn't. Record companies and promoters, they could wreck careers. Johnny Carson exercised his power to insult the band. Jesse Colin Young walked his own path. It worked. He didn't have the hits of the Beatles or Bob Dylan because he wasn't them.
Jesse Colin Young. Great voice, great musician, great talent but he never seemed to care for the music business very much. I remember well staying up to watch The Youngbloods on The Tonight Show years ago, the night Johnny Carson told them to wipe their noses and go home. If you were in show business at that time I don't think you wanted Johnny Carson to be mad at you. He was very powerful could make or break an entertainer's career. He could destroy people.

"More popular"?
He's an artist who creates beautiful music. He never lacked for
"popularity".
Johnny was a clown who's producers treated musicians like trash, except for
Jesse of course. Jesse's music will last much longer than
that talk show guy, what ever his name was.
