Im an Aussie who lives in the US. Thanks to four years in this culture I've become aware of the black people/fried chicken stereotype.
Last year a friend visited from back home. I live in Vegas and we spent a lot of time busing to off-strip locations one day. At one point my mate asked what "Popeye's" was and I explained that it was a fried chicken with tasty food.
Anyway, about 2 hours later we are on our way back to The Strip and we're running late for a show we have tickets for when the bus stops at a CROWDED stop where about 25 people, mostly black, board the bus.
I express confusion about why there are so many people boarding here, and my friend, armed with his new knowledge about Popeye's being tasty, enthusiastically shouts and points "It's because there's a Popeye's right there!" as black people file into the bus.

I mean, no offence to the US, but they don't play cricket, so I doubt they would know that the "black crowd" in question was a crowd of West Indian supporters, not a group of African-Americans. After seeing the ad myself I cracked a smile. In terms of Aussie culture, no it's not racist. I can see where it would be construed that way... if the ad was shown here in the U.S.. What I have to wonder about though is why it was even an issue if this isn't considered racist in Australia. We didn't get it here in the U.S. so who bitched about it? I'm really curious about that. I had to watch the ad twice before it dawned on me; Black people/fried chicken. Shows that if you look for it, racism can be found almost anywhere. I'm a 64 year old Afro-American man who likes fried chicken and (gasp) watermelon also. I was also raised in South Central LA and am a former gang member. Stereotypical? So be it. Personally, I could have done without some of the language, but your explanation of the ad was very informative as well as humorous

Yeah, this whole "RASCIST" outcry is just an over-reaction. I mean, no offence to the US, but they don't play cricket, so I doubt they would know that the "black crowd" in question was a crowd of West Indian supporters, not a group of African-Americans. It was, as mentioned, a reference to the Test Series that had been played since Boxing Day between Australia and the West Indies.
Hell we have nothing against them anyway and they're not offended either, they've even stuck around for state games
