Up to a point. Lots of Spike's responses are verbatim quotes from the war memoirs. However, "Can you see me? Good, then I'm here" and other bits and pieces could only come from one man.
I thought Barrymore did rather well on that interview, considering the ass of an interviewer, but in terms of ad-libbing, Spike here is amazing - as evidenced by the cheers at the end.
MB may be a fearless performer, but he's not a natural comedian; Spike *was* a living script ;-)
