@StormZephyr ohh boy, woodcocks are hard to find, even for a veteran birdwatcher. I went with a group to the local preserve and while we can hear it, we can't find them, this video is very nicely done, too bad out preserves here are much much thicker than the clearing he's buzzing in.
i saw one of these crossing the street this morning, i thought it was a common snipe at first, but as soon as i say the markings on the back of the woodcock i knew i was wrong
i have a woods behind my house and there EVERWHERE! They walk around the trails in the day time also, thats when i always see them, and they ARE woodcocks.
Great video! I've chased these around for a while once last year, neat little bird. Then I had a Whipporwil fly in. We were on a canoe trip in early June on the Susquehanna west branch in PA. I've mistaken their call for frogs for years!
I've heard that sound so many times and never knew that it was a woodcock.

Believe it or not, the best area I have found them is around automotive salvage yards, in the thickets surrounding them.
