"Got this setup from my wife for Christmas. I like it! Batt life is a little short. If you intend to leave the camera on for an all day ride, I recommend three batteries. Not recording the entire trip, just on standby waiting for a record signal. With the camera mounted to the top of your helmet, I don't think that you could hear the ..."

@J1I9M7M4Y Hope I'm not too late to reply, but there are actually ways to use external mics; There's an official external microphone (tie-clip style), a Male RCA Phono Mic-In Cable, and a 3.5mm Female Mic-In Adapter Cable (all official too). So yeah. I'll probably buy one of those now that I know they have external microphone capabilities!
@TheBoofdog - unfortunately the dealer specs and all the info I can find do not say for sure. I would imagine so... but don't quote me on that one... I will do some sleuthing and get back to you.
@TheBoofdog - so, as with the camera.. they are both water resistant... not water proof.. you don't want to submerge them, that wouldn't be a great idea. The depth rating essentially makes it a suitable choice for wet conditions, rain, snow... getting splashed...but neither are designed to be placed directly in the water. Hope that helps.
Neither you nor gizzmag mention if the drift has other settings(and what they are)but 1080P? GoPro has 720P...960P...1080P and then two FPS settings for as well. it is a hassle to have to upload everything in a 1080p file all the time. I use 720P on my GoPro as it is a little faster and Youtube will process it so that it can be viewed in 1080P. Resolution choices are important info. I know..."go to the site"(I will). Just surprised any 'review' would leave such basics out. Thanks.
@lowandfastdotcom - Good point! 1080p, 720p, WVGA up to 30 fps are the recording modes of the HD170. I will make sure that I pass that on to be included in future reviews!
something i prefer with the x170 is that it takes AA not a rechargable because its hard to charge rechargable batteries when E.G your on a week trip or something you kinda run out of charge in the battery ... id like it if it were like the old 1 in as much as the rechargable battery was the same shape as 2 AA batteries so both could be used :/
@olipitt12 - Well the thing with the rechargeable battery is that is is a bit more earth friendly, but it doesn't have the same life span as the 2 AA Lithium Ion batteries...However, Drift is soon to be releasing extra batteries for purchase, plus there are also car chargers and solar chargers that make the transition a little easier... :)
Unfortunately, we are unable to control the manufacturers release of a product, this particular camera was a retailers demo model, which we received for a limited amount of time - in order to see, touch and learn about the features before its official release. This way we could report any issues we may have has with it, and correct them prior to shipping to customers.
We apologize that Drift was unable to have them available prior to your vacation, they are now available, however.
Thanks for the thorough review. I love how you guys go into real detail about the x170 hd camera. I bought the Gopro from you guys but this looks like an interesting alternative to the Vio because of the LCD but HD and cheaper. Guess I'll have to convince my wife I need this too after she drags me to the new Twilight :-)
@theyellowk123 GoPro cams are great. Drift's LCD screen makes it one of our favorite wearable HD cams. Have you seen the Drift HD 170 review in our blog?

I can´t understand why this kind of cameras doesn´t have the possibility to use external mic. The sound q in all of the helmet cams is a joke.

nippaaa 1 year ago
@nippaaa - the ContourHD 1080p weighs in at 4.3oz/123 grams. The Drift HD170 weighs in at 5.6oz/160g - so slightly heavier.

is it possible to record video while using video out?i mean record in the SD card and see the image in an external source like a tv at the same time.
i ask you because i need to record the video and at the same time send the video signal with a wireless video transmitter
xiro6 1 year ago
@xiro6 Yes this is possible. By connecting the AV cable you will get a live view regardless if you are recording or not.
