  • Gorgeous.....this is how a traditional Geisha would have really looked

  • So what is the difference between Maiko and Geisha?

  • @Gungemaster109 Training time. Maiko is an apprentice geiko. A Geisha is a fully honored/trained geiko.

  • her kimono reminds me of the one Sayuri wore in the memoirs of a geisha movie when she went to the Baron's estate.

  • Beautiful. Maikos and geishas are like masterpieces of art.

  • How nice! She is young maiko in July. She don't have a year since misedashi, the debut,so she pain just one lip. After a year she will paint upper lip too.

    I love her kanzashi

  • she's really pretty, but she needs to colors her top lip too.

  • Its bc she isn't full geisha yet, she's a Maiko. Maikos can only color one lip. Full geisha can color both.

  • @onyxgoth11 That would make her not a Junior Maiko. When they become Senior Maiko they put color on their top lips also.

  • awesome

  • but by looking at her collar, she's fixing to head into senior maiko

  • collar says nothing yet, look at the lip.

  • @xxHartBrokenxx

the collar does show some status in her training......her lip is painted that way for it's a symbol she's a baby (so to speak) when they change their collars she paints her lips full and her collar is completly white....because there's an old saying in the geisha world "a maiko becames a geisha when she turns her collar" it turns from red to white. Before 1959, the changed her collar only if she had a dana or if she had mizuage, now it goes by rank and skill

  • @darkjapanesegirl18

The lip painting is wrong but it is some right. it's left unfilled on the top for one year. Then she paints it fully.

The also change their collars gradually from red to white by using white embroidery.

  • @attackofdameepits Can tell someyhing more about that? (Changes of lips, collars.)

  • @Siristaromen

Sure, I can tell a lot of the karyukai (Maiko world) . Please message me. There are not enough characters for me to tell here.

  • What about her lipstick, isn't there a meaning for why only her bottom lip is painted/?

  • yea, she's a juniour maiko, it proves she is not a woman yet but still a baby

  • whats the difference between Maiko and a Geisha???

  • A maiko is a geisha-in-training.

  • Comment removed

  • it's because she's only maiko

  • actualy i got the answer from anouther video it becuse she has been a maiko less then a year.

  • its so amazing that this tradition is still around. not as prominent as before but amazingly still present.

  • a geisha's makeup always goes with her Obi. As you can see her Obi is red as is her makeup on her eyes. You can also tell she's a maiko (or a trainee geisha) as she wears the little red thing in her hair as well as the neck makeup.

  • That's not true. Her obi is actually orange. The only part that's red is the strip that goes across the front of her chest. A maiko's makeup is always red and has been for hundreds of years. The makeup is always the same no matter what color obi or kimono a maiko wears.

  • The red strip that sujinshin6291 talks about is called the Obi-age. Towards the end of a Maiko-san's training, the Obi-age is tied in a special way ^^

  • @sujinshin6291 The obi-age ^^

  • @sujinshin6291 You listen too hard. He said her collar is red, which it is. It signifies that she is a maiko and not a full fledged geisha yet.

  • i thought that if the coulour in the back of their hair is red then they have lost their mizuage (soz about spelling mistakes)but if it is any other colour they havn't. thats what i read ^_^

  • No, that's not true either lol. The bun in the back of the head changes style from wareshinobu (what this maiko has now) to ofuku (a different style) after maiko turn eighteen (this process is called mizuage. Mizuage is not the loss of virginity to a wealthy man) and the cloth in the bun is changed as well. Just after 18 has a red cloth, then it is pink etc. Although I have seen some very senior maiko with blue or white cloth in their buns, but I think it was just the personal preference :)

  • ohh thanks for clearing that up lol ^_^

  • isn't the best way to tell if she is a maiko or geiko the colour of her collar (in this case, maiko... not white)??

  • That's true ^^ Maiko-san, when they begin their training wear a mainly red collar. As they train more and their rank raises, their collar gradually lessens with red. Before becoming a Geiko they do wear a white collar, but this has noticable patterns on it. After becoming a Geiko their collar is all white ^^

  • u can tell she is a makio cause her gobi goes down

  • and only her bottom lip is painted

  • yes thank you fuck finally someone makes some sense lol

  • She is in the Miyako Odori 06 program but not in the 07 program. So she might have quit.

  • This maiko is Ichikazu. Check John Foster's 100 Views of Maiko and Geiko. She is a first year maiko April of 03 in that picture. She is still first year here but is wearing Gion Matsuri Kanzashi, meaning this video was taken in July 03.

  • the maiko koyou

  • i think so

  • Not really - It's Ichikazu.

  • hmm good but should been more explaination of her

  • the poor maiko... don't the people nerv her?

  • maybe- but a maiko wouldn't show it, right?
