It was on the old 1957 RCA commercial recording on which the cover error occured. I think the stereo single LP of the highlights came out a couple of years later - sans auto. The CD cover, of course, is without auto. I have all three.
If you have the old mono recording of this, the cover shows an automobile parked lower right hand corner. (The original complete set was released only in HI FI. The one LP "highlights" recording was available in Stereo - sans auto on the cover. The CD set - in stereo is also without auto.) Stevens was amazing in this role. Della Casa and Peters weren't too bad either. :-)
Brava, Rise!!! One of the great interpreters of the mezzo-soprano reperatoire. She could sound almost masculine as Orfeo then be the height of womanhood as Carmen or Dalilah.
Still with us (in her mid 90'a!) and still AFAIK on the Board of Directors of the Met. So glad they're reissuing her recordings on CD!
Either slow down the introduction or speed up the aria, Pierre (or was it Rise's decision) !!! Good tone and feeling for the words, though - you get Orfeo's grief at the loss of Euridice in Stevens' singing. Pretty good phrasing, too! Thank you very much for sharing this with us!!!!!
Cool picture, fine recording... always liked Stevens and this aria, personally though (despite what was prevalent at the time) I prefer a tenor singing this.

Funny; something similar happens with the intro and the aria on the 1957 RCA recording with Stevens and Monteux.

I do love the rich sound of her voice--and thank you for the photo--who knew they had platform boots in '55--I thought that was my 70's era:-))
