Actually, no. The song was written by an Ukrainian-American Jew in New York. And yes, it was written in Yiddish. It was latter translated to English by another American Jew of the same origin, but retained its Yiddish name.
Hi folks, You all talk about a 'Polosh Version' - of course, it's a Polish Orchestra playing, and yes, they play it wonderfuly (!!!) - but, what they play is not polish, but the official American print arrangement of this song, done by Jack Mason in the beginning of the 40's. It apeared at Harms Inc. / New York ... (By the way, a lovely version of this great song, we're also using this one.) Cheers!
Please. Bai mir bistu sheyn/ bai mir bist du sheyn
is the way Yiddish is written in English spelling these days. Of course we would all know better if so many Yiddish-speaking people hadn't died all of a sudden.
I included your both Yiddish versions to my commentary.
However, the number presented here in the times of its popularity was written on the records generally in the way that I presented in the title of the video.
For "the sudden death" I have my greatest regret and respect.
Right away, Fogg plunges the listener into a catchy and hot arrangement of this tune. Mieczysław was such a versatile artist, and the accompanying Wars Orchestra is outstanding.
A swinging Polish version of this song. Fogg with his great voice. But if I were there, I would say to the lyricist: stick in the Yiddish line "Baj mir bistu szejn" for fun.
Love the picture!! So very avante-guarde. :))This is great!! I didn't read the text right away and as I listened I thought, Is it possible, is it Mieczyslaw? Then I read that it was. He was a very versatile artist and really put this song across. Very nice. Thank you.
Schööön!

Yet more proof that swing music had an international appeal.
The Swedish version, and of course the American version, retained the main lyric in the original Yiddish - which this Polish version doesn't.

Sorry, mistake, I just checked - it was released not in the beginning of 40's, but in 1937. ;-)

Your comment reminded me that I have Polish version of "Close Your Eyes", quite interesting and made for 4 male voices ensamble only, 1934.
Wish the record itself was in a better shape.

"Ty masz dla mnie coś" - title of this version, I should have added. It is close to "You do something to me", I think (?).
