To see 5 of those gorgeous lightnings at the same time there are no words. My mother worked at waco army airfield during the war and I can see why the P-38 was her favorite!
I'd like to think that these were some of the P38's that I help build between Sept. '42 and Sept. 43 during the time I worked at Lockheed Burbank. (Over 10,000 were built). I would like to celebrate my 85th birthday (and the 70th anniversay of my work on the planes) next year by getting a flight in a P38. There are a few available for that purpose here in Southern California and as a Life Member of the P38 National Association, I ought to be able to work out an arrangement. This a great video
@campcoburn Where exactly was the factory? I live in LA now and I've tried doing some digging and haven't been able to find the address. I know the property has been sold, but I'd still love to drive by and just see where these were made. My grandfather was a crew chief for a p38 for the 94th fighter squadron over in N. Africa and Italy. Also, as for the flight, the place that offers a ride is Planes of Fame in Chino, CA. The cost for the p38 is about $1200 if I remember right.
This may well be the best video I have ever seen on You Tube! I didn't realize that there were that many flyable P-38s. That's awesome because I think the Lightning was the most beautiful fighter from WWII. The P-38 is one reason why we love airplanes so much. Thanks for posting.

Possibly one on the best videos posted on YouTube. Bravo ! The choice of music was exactly right. You paced your scenes to match its mood and sense perfectly. The aerial photography is extraordinary. The five, climbing in trail at 2:30 positively raised the hair on my arms. What elegance and power. And to imagine 20 or 21 year olds actually flew them in combat.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! My favorite plane ×5. This is phenomenal. The best video of P-38s I've ever seen. Plus, the music is really good. I am curious, though, is there anyway you could upload the same video but with the original audio? I only ask because I would love to hear the sounds of 5 P-38s in formation.
ok, well the music is a blending of sorts of 4 songs....so no real soundtrack so to speak. The beginning is from HALO, Truth and Reconciliation which morphs into This Is Our Land(Epic scores Vol ??), then, I Still Have a Soul(Epic scores Vol??) and then, In a Moment of Greatness from the Excelsius soundtrack.........thanks again!
Ok, for EDMARTINTX, the airfield with the runways you asked about was Shafter-Minter-Field near Bakersfield....and forNoLongerFooled, we were heading to the old Mather Field in Sacramento for the CCA show and I was lucky enough to be flying in the back of a P-51 as 'escort'! Thanks for all the nice comments! Next time?? Oh dear......
Excellent, inspiring video. Hightlights>>At Start-Taxiout of "Glacier Girl", "Thoughts of Midnight" and "Ruff Stuff". At 0:40-Closeup of "Ruff Stuff". At 1:45-Closeup of silver "981 Honey Bunny". At 2:30-Trail formation. At 3:00-"23 Skidoo" from below. At 3:40-Five-ship pitchout. At 4:45-Closeup of "Thoughts of Midnight" and "Glacier Girl" in fingertip joined by "Honey Bunny" then "23 Skidoo". At 5:50-Four-ship pitchout at Mather Field. At 6:30-Taxi closeup of "Thoughts of Midnight".
There won't be a next time. Somethimes you have to go with what you have and live with it. Five P-38s were caught from the back seat of a P-51 trainer. It was catch-as-catch-can -- and seriously phenomenal.
Sometimes that's better than the contrived -- with stabilized cameras and 1080P. In this case, it certainly was.
You're right, though. It was great to see all these P-38s together.
Some of that video must have been tricky to shoot--single handed formation flying, holding the camera in the other isn't easy! Wan I'd I have loved to hear them go over on that low pass at Chino
Epic! I believe this is the largest flight of Lightnings in over 50 years. On the way to the 2010 California Capitol Airshow. 23 Skidoo made an unscheduled stop due to mechanical issues and never made the airshow. But seeing the other 4 up close was an amazing treat!
Wonderful warbirds. The p-38's my favorite W W 2 airplane.

The only thing that would have made this video more perfect, would have been to have Zeros for those 38's to jump... ;^) Fantastic video!!!

The first piece of music appearing in the video is from Halo: Combat Evolved. I don't know about any of the rest.

I nearly cried.
Seven flyable! I didn't know. Last I'd heard, there were only three. May they never die!
Beautiful music. I'd like to know what the musical pieces are as well.
I'd also love to see another version of this video with the engine sounds instead of music.
All the hairs on my arms stood on ends both times they did the breakaway maneuver. So lovely!

Next time hopefully shoot it with a stabilized camera mount and post it in 1080P.
Then it would be truly beautiful!
