  • I Would Love To Work There when Im Older :D

  • :( I wish i could go there :( I could im 12 but its to far away and my parents couldn't afford for me to board there or to move ... I wish i could go there badly !

  • What the guy at 1:31 really means is it's not oppressive enough for his liking.

  • The guy at 1:31 is an idiot.

  • I bet it's expensive though

  • Amazing. This is the first I've heard of A.S. Neil or of Summerhill, and yet it seems so... right. I find that I want to know more.

  • I do like the idea of Summerhill, but i think i'd still go to the school i attend now.

  • Charter schools aren't necessarily democratic.

Multiage democratic schools are the only way to really organize education.

  • how come i've never heard of this guy, to be able to revolutionise the way children are educated is surely an enormous contribution to mankind..this is what education should be --to light a fire within the child that will awaken the creative being that we all are, instead what we have as education is teaching kids to do what computers can do far better---memorise and regurgitate---makes me so sick when i realise that this deliberate dumbening of the human spirit is happening before our very eyes

  • is this a documentary film??

    where can i get it?

  • I was lucky to have attended a "Free School" on scholarship. It saved my life and my sanity and gave me an incredible education. I'm absolutely sure that without it, I would've been in prison or dead by now. It was the same for many of my schoolmates. Gods bless the Free Schools.

  • I wanted to go to Summerhill in the late 1960s and wrote to A.S. Neill. He answered very graciously. Being in the USA, and without my parents' permission, I was never able to attend, and, then - out of the blue - in 1972, Neill sent me another letter - very warm and optimistic. I think he saw his life drawing to a close, and wanted to encourage and thank young people who would carry on the ideas of Summerhill.

  • There's something that is discovered with many springs upon our hearts: Discipline. As a student I never understood it to the fullest expression until later years, and I also remember the brightest bulbs in my classroom where the ones who were taught discipline [I know there could be a genetic factor plus the way people is brought up:interesting discussion] with this sense of satisfaction doing what we were supposed to do: learning.

  • it's really stupid that the government is trying to close summerhill. parents can choose it or not.

  • @onionhouse94

Hello! I´m really into the philosophy of Summerhill School and A.S Neill. It´s my dream one day to be working with kids and yougsters in this spirit. I would be so happy, to get in touch with Summerhillians.

    Thank U !

  • @onionhouse94

    Hello!

I´m really into the Philosophy of Summerhill School and A.S. Neill. It´s my dream to exactly in that spirit with children and youngsters one day :o)))

I would be so happy if I manage to get in touch with Summerhillians!

    Thank U so much!

    Summerhillians rock on!

  • thankyou

  • god I wanted soooo badly to go to summerhill, too late now though!!! oh well maby my kids can go.

  • very good!

a shame the quality is so bad.

what happend about the school being in extential threat?

  • Man, I would have just sat around all day in that amazing garden and read books!!!

  • Some school this is

  • This is brillant! How cool is it to go to a school like this? I'm doing my Level 1 Cache in child Care so this great. We are going to be learning about Oftead and A child matters so this is perfect. The film they did of this is amazing, worth it if you are doing child care exams!!!!!

  • summerhill ist doch fürn arsch kack schule

  • Haha, this is the most inspected school in the country.

  • in Taiwan, actually, all schools are hells.

  • Quote:

Gerrison Landsdowne (Director, Childrens Right's Office)

"It does encourage to a very great extent children to QUESTION and CHALLENGE rather than to CONFORM ... constituting a THREAT."

On reading this one could imagine the school's function was to raise homicidal maniacs!

Negative knee-jerk comments are prompted by those who obviously haven't read A.S. Neill's book.

See what 'Gleichschritt' [Marching in step] did for Hitler's Germany!

Summerhill produces humane people not robots.

  • No wonder why some will not accept this school because English state schools are doing much worst in terms of autonomy for their children.

  • maybe help you to at least spell bexsiie...really..is that what state education is making you talk and communicate like?

  • whatever!! there's no need to be like that. i can spell properly if i want to but maybe u haven't heard of such a thing as text talk?

Seriously how stuck up are you that my spelling needed to be commented on? its just so stupid, and i think others would agree.

  • Whatever!!! there is no need to be like that!! I can spell properly if i want to but if i want to write in 'text talk' then i can. Seriously how stuck up are you, that u had to comment on my spelling?!! its just stupid and im sure others would agree.

  • Thanks!!!

  • I wish that all schools were as great and wonderful as Summerhill.....the world would be a better place...i'm sure

  • "When you lose the fear of being hurt by others,

you lose the fear of being yourself."

    What a wonderful video.

It is one of the driving desires of my own life to make education the beautiful experience it can be and should be for all children and for everyone.

Videos like this truly inspire me.

    Thanks enlight77. : )

  • why should you have the advantage over anyone else in the country ? just cause your born in a morre upper class family. you should do the same stuff as every1 else, you just want to relax and do nothing

  • i go to summerhill, it is my whole world and to me a.s. neill is not just neill he was my great grandfather and if there`s someone who is against summerhill your wrong trust me. being at summerhill my whole life has not tought me to be a good apple it has tought me to live my life as i want to.

  • Hello, i've just read "a radical approach to child rearing", and I was wondering how you feel about "us", children who don't have the chance to go to summerhill...

Are your parents jaleous of your attachment for summerhill? And did your family disapprove the decision of your parents?

Is it difficult to you to imagine that one day, you will leave Summerhill?

  • How does it feel to go to a fantastic school like summer hill??

I really wish I couldve gone there but unfortunately I didnt hear about it till it was too late.

Im 17 at the moment, and wish I could join the school but as you know u have to be 12 years old or younger to join.

Wouldve been such a great opportunity for me if I was to join summer hill.

I was thinking of joining and saw it as a way to find my true self..sadly that opportunity has long passed.=[

  • Wow - what a powerful statement.

  • lol, thanks. x

  • @Bexsiie May be you didn't have the chance to go to summerhill but you can do in life what summerhill tries to teach, don't forget that, you have to be free, happy and have common sense ;) I'm 17 years late and from another country, but I'm still learning how to be happy every moment! enjoy your life!

  • @Bexsiie i suppose you could go there and become one of the 'houseparents' ...they help the kids if they become ill and such. so you could atleast see the children blossom even if you didnt get a chance to fully be free as a child. LOL even i want to go there and visit when im older! xx

  • i would have done anything to go here, but I never knew it existed until too late :(

  • Comment removed

  • ye same =[

i wanted to apply but im 17 atm and they dnt allow children over 12...

i wuld love it if they wuld be able to allow older children to apply cos it sounds like the best school tht any child culd go to.

It looks like such an inspiring school, i wuld love sooo much to go there.

  • @wannabeemo6000

I can imagine from the heart, what u are talking about! It´s my dream to work exactly in the philosophy of A.S. Neill and Summerhill with youngsters one day :o))

I would be so happy if I could manage to get in touch with Summerhillians!

    Thank U so much :o)

    Summerhillians rock on!!!!

  • @Wallander09 you can go but you must be very kind and such things

  • @Angelos11111998

What a great thing to happen! An answer to my comment :o)) So please tell me then Angelos: Are u a Summerhillian? Thank u for making my day!

  • @Wallander09 no i am not a summerhillian but i would like to go there very much

  • @Angelos11111998 I see. I´m 40 years old and after having read the summerhill classic I did emagine, what my life may have been, if I went there... to me summerhill is the only chance to let children find themselfs.

  • i want to go to summerhill

but my parents are never going to agree opptionlal lessons

  • @supercool365

It´s a shame if your parents don´t trust in u it means they olso don´t trust in themselfs

  • Did that cow, Gerrison Landsdowne, just say that is a danger for children to learn to question and challenge??? What does she want, to raise sheep that just blindly follow. I taught my daughter, if it doesn't make sense to you, question the hell ot of it.

  • she is saying that society is threatened by summerhill because it encourages children to be independent thinkers.

    wt smith

    director

  • That's what I thought. Is she out of her F...ing mind???

  • Soo she did say that it was dangerous for children to question and and challenge. If you can't question and challenge you can't have an independent mind. xx

  • no she is saying that raising independent minded children is a positive thing but that unfortunately society does not see it that way.

  • @enlight77 Hi, love this. Can you please let me know what the music is that starts at about 4:25? Thanks very much. Regards, Gedda

  • Great Neill, I'd like a similar school in Catalonia to try work there. Come on SUMMERHILL!

  • I really like the idea of this. However, when the pupils leave the school, is the world going to be full of pressures and will they not be equipped to deal with it? Or will they have the confidence to tread their own path in their own way?

  • It is well documented in Neill's own writings about Summerhill and other comentators observations as well as the pupils experiences that children who have been educated at Summerhill are often more sure of themselves and better able to deal with life after school than those in conventional education. This is because they have been encouraged to follow their own interests and develop at their own pace in whatever way they choose.

  • real life is nothing like the traditional academic system - no one is grading you or testing you or making you go to lessons. Summerhill is more like the real world than anything!

  • A few years ago, when Summerhill was still opposed by many people, a report was published, in a national newspaper. It stated that many of Summerhill's former students had gone onto further education, then excellent jobs such as teachers, actors and many others. As another viewer of this video said, Summerhill is more like the real world than the traditional education system, so in my eyes, they will definately have the confidence to tread their own path in their own way!

  • Thats really good Billy. Id love to see the rest.

  • beautiful & hugely compelling - when/how can we see the rest??
