I have been diagnosed ADHD, and I will say that one of the main reasons I stopped taking the ADHD drugs is because I was less creative when taking them.
oh wow, I started listening to this video fine, but then i opened a new tab, logged into facebook and completely got distracted. Now I have to play the whole video again. BOY DO I HAVE ADHD!
@gaoxinglangblog no if you defend this crap then you are the one is ignorant there are no medical tests to prove such a thing exists aids and cancer and alot of other medical conditions can be tested to see if the person has them add and adhd are a matter of someones opinion diet disapline and direction have alot to do with it to
@dihle12 there were points in time when there were no tests of cancer and aids. people were just seen as sick or healthy. Next you will say depression does not exist, if you apply your flawed logic to every psychological condition.
if it was a matter of diet and dicipline then there would be no need to diagnose add, people could just eat well and try harder. but add is not caused by Lack of effort. it is the way a persons brain operates. you can keep believing what you want butyourwrong
@dihle12 You're ignorant. I have some VERY successful upper class adults in my family with excellent discipline and diet that put in long work weeks that know for a fact they have severe add
Well this is soo funny this is not new Information we all knew that ADHD kids are actually geniuses and they are very creative and only in the western world they make it into a sickness....you guys are soo funny

To state that ADD was responsible for the lightbulb and the USA is rediculous. It's like saying that if Christopher Columbus' boat had sunk, that North America would now be a wilderness governed by a few million Indians. Try not to take advantage of a current state of dumbness of the average American's intellect when putting forth your ideas. Media has a responsibility to advance intellect not to take advantage of broadbased stupidity.
its like people with ADD are so bored that they crave knowledge rather from a phsical stance than seeing in a book cause you know einstein didnt just write words he has drawn out his whole intire theory and now scientists can understand.
Just got diagnosed with ADHD and was very disturbed by the term "disorder". Thanks for Thom for his notion hunter in the gatherers world. This was very conforming to my initial thought. Else I would perhaps give into the notion of being "abnormal". Good on you Thom.
@uddinri - Disorder is a statement of consequence. It means in this instance that ADD has a tendency to disrupt or interfere with any kind beneficial order of this life in America in 2011. It means that it is likely to interfere with the quality of life, negatively...and create instead....more disorder. It's at its root, descriptive and not meant as an insult. Commonly though, I will agree that Americans think that the term "disorder" as an insult. One of the reasons we call some kids "special".
@JohnnyRock2000: calling this trait a disorder is a consequence of failure to understand what the idea of ORDER encapsulate. Scientists are trying to understand the world, fine -- that does not mean if something does not match with common observations is "out of order". There are a range of other things that can be understood as orderly if enough attention is paid. The knowledge on ADD will evolve a lot to get rid of "disorder" part, this is just a category. So it is too early to be sure.
@uddinri - I get what you mean, when it is put in line with other "disorders", but there can be huge consequences of ADD, huge disorder in life. My brother has it and is in denial. Often he forgets to turn the barbeque off (all night) and the same with an element on the stove....for hours. He has melted pots and pans, there have been fires and yet there is no change of behavior...He is totally accepting of it. His main preocupation is that his wife does not find out. How dangerous is that?
@JohnnyRock2000: I accept this as a condition which is less common then non ADHD type; however when someone is pathologized that is not easy to accept so I see what your brother is through. Since in my case I came to know it when I am 30+, this does not make much difference to me I hope. Yet the knowledge of having this condition is a shake if not shock. Family is the place from where one should get most support. I am very lucky. When I told my sister, she said you definitely have this thing LOL
@JohnnyRock2000: his wife would understand that her husband would need a little more support, and understanding. For person with a warm family surrounding this is not much a problem. But too much acceptance that he is a type of person who is destined to be inattentive is no good. This kind of thinking may worsen one's performance in organization after diagnosis. I fully agree with the theories explained in the videos here. ADDs are valuable to the societies in the non-routine, different way.
@uddinri - His wife must know that he has organizational problems as all important household documentation is kept, organized and filed in her home office. Also she leaves notes all over the place about what must be done and when etc. He wonders why she is obsessive about "garbage day", and I tell him that if it was up to him the house would be up to his knees in garbage. Ha! Sure ADD has it's pluses but it is difficult when no one can really count on an ADDer for any kind of follow through.
@JohnnyRock2000: that means a reasonable and intelligent wife. But as long as ADD is seen as a weakness, your brother may continue to deny. Because an ADDer usually is not unaware of his inward capabilities (or lack) compared to others. So it is difficult for him to accept a negative connotation implied in the traditional diagnosis. In case of my sisters, their feeling were "We knew it, LOL". For us it is just like a known thing became official. That's why I call myself lucky, so far. Best.
@uddinri - So your sister confirmed your conclusion. Discovering and investigating your own condition and then having it confirmed is good in that you no longer have to look for excuses for behavior, but solutions, tools and some kind of remedy. But ADD people that are in denial are furious and defensive when the possibility is brought up. What's left is minimization and rationalization. Not much hope until a trait causes real pain and then an awakening. Not likely to happen. Excuses reign.
@SSuperCuriouss - Whether hyperfocusing or not, they are spacey. Hard to communicate to or with as their attention is either missing or divided. Try talking to a person focused on a video game. Try talking to an person thinking about anything else but what you yourself are talking about. Same difference...lost in thought. Statements like this turn ADDers inside out.....My mother's daughter has a son who married Joan? What relation to me is she? Can't focus enough to follow.
@JohnnyRock2000 - Yes, thanks. I was just wondering how I could both be easily distracted but also at times be so focussed on something that the rest of the world disappears. And often in working through difficult problems or concepts with others, I can go on for hours while others can't concentrate for long periods. Often focus & forget to eat.
I will have to conclude that I only have mild ADD. Teachers had a real problem keeping me from day dreaming. Now I use tools and tips to cope at work.
I have been diagnosed ADHD, and I will say that one of the main reasons I stopped taking the ADHD drugs is because I was less creative when taking them.

Good stuff Thom.
Us ADDers have to understand that our brain differences do not necessarily lead to disorder.
If we overpathologise ourselves- we become dispirited, and lose faith in ourselves.
Your work does every ADDer a great favour in allowing us to see the positive sides of our characters.
