My brother had a red Spyder with black leather interior, what a car. It did have a tendency to skid. On one wet evening we turned 3 360s on an exit ramp from I95. After we were through spinning, we ended up pointed in the right direction and just kept going.
No one has seen the last car, #6000, since it left Willow Run. It was an Olympic Gold Monza hardtop, 110 hp powerglide car, black interior. Sources in GM claim it was scrapped some time after it left the assembly line. #5999, second to the last, is still around and in good condition, owned I think by the Corvair Preservation society. It's distributor was put in backwards and it wouldn't start after it was assembled LOL
@gojoe283 From what I understand, #5999 was once owned by one of GM's VPs and has less than 15,000 on the odometer. It has the four-carb (140hp) engine with a Powerglide.

It always seems the people who make a negative comment about the Corvair have never owned one or driven one but they are such an authority on the car. I have driven Corvairs for over 36 years and they are a delight to drive !!!!!!!!
i just got a 68 monza corvair and im in love with it. the car is not to unsafe the only problem ive had a problem with is when you take sharp turns and punch the gas the front end tends to pick up and causes you un able to steer. other than that its not a bad vehical
@simplestupid1 - I guess that even in the later years you had to be careful how much air pressure was in those front tires. Also, I guess because those cars were more prone to oversteer, it might've been good to 'hang the rear end out' as you're going into a turn. But be sure to keep at least 11psi fewer in the front tires than in the back!
The Corvair died for lots of reasons, few had to do with that turd Nader. Chevy had introduced the Chevy II, that stole sales, as did the Malibu and Camaro. The Mustang certainly did not help either.
My earliest childhood memory is being in the dealership with my parents buying a white 1960 Corvair 4 door. It looked like a bathtub and had its share of quirks but it was a good car that was fun to drive. I much preferred the 65 and later styling but have never owned one.
@RabidKoala I purchased a '69 Monza 4 speed 12/69. I carried 2 sets of fan belts tools to change them. The push rod tubes leaked oil after the first belt blew. After that I had to drive it with the windows down in the winter. Replacing the push rod tube seals was too expensive. Sold it in 72 with 100,000 miles on it. Thats what killed the Corvair. It got 34 MPG @ 65 MPH Premium gas only.
Ditto to what the above folks are saying. I had one in the 60's and loved it! It was a great car and I had no problems & only excitment in driving it!
@BlueHeavenBound The Ford Mustang and Falcon, were known for fiery deaths as the trunk floor was the top of the gas tank. Late model Crown Victoria's, were very bad for rear end collision fuel tank fires.
Nader was (and still is) an idiot. The early Corvairs did have some strange Handling quirks. GM had already addressed the problem by the time Nader wrote his book. The Corvair actually was a great handling car for it's day. The damage already been done. In the the public's mind the Corvair was done too bad!
@P0wergl1de Valiant most certainly was not done in 1969.Valiant and Dart lasted until 1976.The last of the 3 original compacts.Nova, the johnny come lately to the compact wars lasted until Jan 1979.
@hpspeedster you are so right, valiants did last, my bad! my buddy had a 76 what a heap we called it the poozie, slang for booger, it was green. remeber when the "nova" was reborn? UGH was it not built on a japaneese platform?
@P0wergl1de Actually 1969 was the last year for the full-line Falcon. The name would live on on the base-model Torino for 1970 only. By 1970, for all intents and purposes, the original Falcon was replaced by the Maverick.
I have a '65 monza vert.... It's da bomb.... a blast to drive... and the looks it gets !!! Lot of kids just stare at it, jaw dropped...... lololol... Priceless !!!
Damn Nadar! (and Mustang!) 'Stang intro really sent their sales plumeting...I still love these cars. Most loyal owners I have ever met. Stubborn to the end (including me I had about twenty of them in the 80s) First car that was really mine with my own money was a 63 coupe. (circa 1983) Used to be able to pick them up for $150 to $200 bucks back then.. I had coupes, Vans even a couple stationwagons. I wish I could go back and stop myself from selling some of mine..I need to find one!
Take it from a guy who owns two Hemi Cars, a Ferrari and a Pantera, the last car I'd ever give up is my little 140 horse Corvair. It's a ball to drive!
Thanks for this clip..I always wanted to see it. Sadly the last Corvair was reputed to have been scrapped by GM, a number of ppl wanted it, incluidng Pinky Randall and Bill Harrah. Damn shame they cancelled the Corvair, I love the way my 69 (#5056 Monza coupe) handles and I want to keep it forever...Bill H>
@gojoe283 - I've heard that same story about #6000, and it's a shame. I agree that the car deserved a better shake than what it got. Then again with GM being who it was, that should've been expected.
On a brighter note, may I ask what engine, transmission and other options your Corvair has? Just curious.
@thespeez My 69 has the 110 with Powerglide, like most 69s. But I've added A/C from Clark's (smog stuff removed a long time ago). Tinted windsheild, radio, whitewalls, that's pretty much it. I've also added an underdash console with gauges, CD player, switches for A/C, rear defrstoers, etc. Great highway car....
