Depression at 17! Never realised. Looking back, this lady and her music helped me channel out a weird creativity - poetry, which I hid. She was a tonic and made me connect with myself. Thank you for posting this GEM!
@19davo66 Hi stranger! Missed you. Been trying to PM you for months! Pc is getting worse. Maybe I should have let you know so you wouldn't have thought I was ignoring you.
What are you saying here? Carmel started suffering from depression at 17?
@Antzzz247 Yes,I agree with the Alicia Keys and Fallin' connection,Antzzz247.And what about the excellent Lana Del Rey lifting some of Carmel's style and sound? which in turn harks back to black american torch singers of the 50's,40's and 30's?
Great track. Back in 1984 Carmel was in Cardiff, I was sat at a table eating chicken and chips and she sat next to me and engaged in conversation with me "haha" not that she would remember, well, she was a very, very pleasant, friendly and interesting young lady, and I have a wonderful memory of her. Thanks Carmel
Kinda makes you sick that Madonna has been constantly in the charts since this came out, and consistently sells millions of records, While people who actually can sing like Sam Brown and Carmel never got the recognition they deserved.
The days when music was simple and the female singer didn't have to wear next to nothing or be raunchy on stage or in videos to sell records because her voice did it all for her. Carmel had a fantastic voice and I've always loved this song.
I take quite a bit of tablets - not looking for a Jeremy Kyle lecture btw. I was in my teens, mum was on pills, I had a shitty childhood, imagine the most horrible. Then I heard this tune, and loved it. 44 now, head still messed. But, I get comfort from this tune, She promised me 'Hope' that will happen. She is a top bird! x cheers lass x
@19davo66 You & I are cosmic twins. Not same childhood, but other shit & same consequences on my psyche. Never recovered. Not getting better either: last week was laid off work & ended yrs long love affair. But, since as long as can I remember, always took comfort in good music, such as Carmel's. Not only is Carmel AMAZING but always smiling when singing: it's contagious!
As long as I live, I'll never stop listening to good music. Best therapy. Hang in there! I'm trying very hard to.
From the 50s to the early 90s the UK was so incredibly creative musically, it never ceases to amaze me whenever I discover one of these long-forgotten gems. so glad spent some of my best years growing up then.
if you think this is good, wait till you hear the b-side of the original 12", it's called, "Rue St. Denis"; i can't locate the record in my collection, but i know it's here somewhere because i played it - about two years ago - to someone who had not heard of carmel, and they - like everyone i've introduced it to down the years - were blown away by it's seedy yet majestic power, if anyone knows where this criminally neglected masterpiece can be downloaded from, PLEASE let me know
@marc23133 u are right it is Rue St Denis(dance mix)
I have just found the 12" stuck inside a 12" Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird.....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.then my 15 year old daughter asked what was that i was holding......
thanks so much for posting. bought the extended version of this on 12" vinyl when it originally came out. had never heard it, but was intrigued when i saw that steve nieve (from elvis costello and the attractions) plaed the keyboards. the song blew me away at first listen. i'll be fifty this summer and this song sounds as great and fresh as ever. great song to play when you're in a funk. all boils down to the last line to me, " i'm giving you hope".
and this is exactly why I just love youtubes: rediscovering the best of the best music EVER! I was 15 when Carmel sang this and now at the age of 40 I'm getting chills all over again! what an unbelievable sound and voice!!! eat your heart out, Duffy and Amy (tho I love you girls as well)!
Just seen Duffy on a documentary about Rough Trade and it reminded me to look up Carmel here because everyone seems to have forgotten her when I point out the similarites. While I think that's she's pretty good, I don't think Duffy's in the same league as Carmel. I needed to prove the point to my kids and they are all in agreement with me for a change!
By the way, its brilliant to find some postings on YouTube that don't involve everyone being nasty and threatening to each other.
Simply one of the BEST albums of the 80s, and one of my FAVORITE LPs of all time! I wish Carmel would reform and tour the US? I don't think they ever came here...well, at least I have my DRUM IS EVERYTHING LP and CD!
can anybody help me does anyone have the album carmel the drum in cd or has made a cd of a vinyl that will make a super fan super happy thanx!!!!! pm my mail cheers!!
Great, used to drink in the Rock Garden together in Glasgow. Great Song. What a Singer. If this girl walked on to X Fator now, her voice would steal the show.
Great! Also for the way she looks, the skipants we wore at that time, I almost forgot about them! Carmel is the best. I wanted be like her when I was 18.
Carmel is unique and the world of music needs her. Her voice is stunning and should be heard by all, thanks Carmel for many happy hours listening and please come back to the studio.
