  • See her prodigy .Amelda May.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • a shame this little woman disappeared from view. good blues/soul voice, took until amy winehouse for this to happen again in UK.

  • Depression at 17! Never realised. Looking back, this lady and her music helped me channel out a weird creativity - poetry, which I hid. She was a tonic and made me connect with myself. Thank you for posting this GEM!

  • @19davo66 Hi stranger! Missed you. Been trying to PM you for months! Pc is getting worse. Maybe I should have let you know so you wouldn't have thought I was ignoring you.

What are you saying here? Carmel started suffering from depression at 17?

  • funny.. chorus girls were more fashionable.

  • Thanks for all the compliments people... My name is Carmel too lol

  • Does anyone else hear where Alicia Keys got her inspiration for Fallin'?

  • @Antzzz247 Yes,I agree with the Alicia Keys and Fallin' connection,Antzzz247.And what about the excellent Lana Del Rey lifting some of Carmel's style and sound? which in turn harks back to black american torch singers of the 50's,40's and 30's?

  • Love this song Carmel is fab ..brings back memories from my 20's x love it x

  • I saw her in the Pardiso in Amsterdam 80's, she gave a 30minute encore...awesome amtmosphere...

  • Great track. Back in 1984 Carmel was in Cardiff, I was sat at a table eating chicken and chips and she sat next to me and engaged in conversation with me "haha" not that she would remember, well, she was a very, very pleasant, friendly and interesting young lady, and I have a wonderful memory of her. Thanks Carmel

  • Kinda makes you sick that Madonna has been constantly in the charts since this came out, and consistently sells millions of records, While people who actually can sing like Sam Brown and Carmel never got the recognition they deserved.

  • The days when music was simple and the female singer didn't have to wear next to nothing or be raunchy on stage or in videos to sell records because her voice did it all for her. Carmel had a fantastic voice and I've always loved this song.

  • Brilliant I cant find my original vinyl but this sure makes up for it.

  • Αυτη ειναι φουναρα........:DDDDDD

  • Man, this was just about as perfect as it got in 1983, still stands now, great talent all round on this...............

  • beautifull voice .. beautifull the singer . a good performance for the 70's

  • I was seriously expecting to see a buxom black girl when i first heard this ... she has a huge voice for a little white girl, bless...

  • Saw her....amazing..x

  • absolutely fabulicious.................

  • This is the Canines Testicles! PURE JOY!

  • love this memories eh !

  • amazing.........................................

  • I take quite a bit of tablets - not looking for a Jeremy Kyle lecture btw. I was in my teens, mum was on pills, I had a shitty childhood, imagine the most horrible. Then I heard this tune, and loved it. 44 now, head still messed. But, I get comfort from this tune, She promised me 'Hope' that will happen. She is a top bird! x cheers lass x

  • @19davo66 You hang in there, the past is gone we can recover from it even though at times it seems like we are forever trapped by it.

  • @floppybollox3 - hey cheers! nice to get a reply like that. Your name has put a big mile on my face! Hope you are having a good day! =0)

  • @19davo66 You & I are cosmic twins. Not same childhood, but other shit & same consequences on my psyche. Never recovered. Not getting better either: last week was laid off work & ended yrs long love affair. But, since as long as can I remember, always took comfort in good music, such as Carmel's. Not only is Carmel AMAZING but always smiling when singing: it's contagious!

As long as I live, I'll never stop listening to good music. Best therapy. Hang in there! I'm trying very hard to.

  • O.S.T.R - dom

  • Sheer class! which of these so called stars can sing like that today? Beckam, cole? I don't think so!

  • sheer class! which of these so called stars can sing like that today, ?

  • Fantastic voice, brings back good memories.

  • I was 13 when I heard this and bought their album - this was normal then!

  • From the 50s to the early 90s the UK was so incredibly creative musically, it never ceases to amaze me whenever I discover one of these long-forgotten gems. so glad spent some of my best years growing up then.

  • How powerful is this!!?

  • Duffy has totally copied the magnificent Carmel... then again this last decade has elevated imitation to an art

  • Uit 1983, zelfs na 27 jaar is dit nog modern. Totaal niet verouderd. Wat een stem...zo krachtig!

  • just equisite

  • Still sounds modern today

  • Wow.....Les Années Carmel....

    J'avais 19 ans.....

    Ça planait dans mon walkman

  • @niquetoc Ds le mien aussi!

  • Still amazing after all these years. 5*

  • Class tune, remember this version well.

  • superb.

  • Comment removed

  • what is she doing now?fav song brings back good memories of old girlfriends

  • lovely song ,rememb buying it many many moons ago,now on my wall

  • she sounds 200 pounds heavier and black ... soo good

  • Yep saw her in the eighties in Brighton fantastic live singer

  • Saw her live in Cologne in the 80ies - brilliant singer.

  • powerful message, beautifully performed.....

  • Still amazing

  • Completely puts Duffy and the like to shame... the best female voice EVER!!! She was out of this world live!

  • One of my most beloves 45'' singles of the '80's

  • I saw her perform this live at Ronnie Scott's in 1983. She was AMAZING!!

  • never ceases to be amazing

  • oh come on folks,,,,, how good is this???

  • @baldystewart:

    This is not good!!!

    It's superb.

Look, listen & learn Amy & Duffy, this is someone who really can sing.

  • if you think this is good, wait till you hear the b-side of the original 12", it's called, "Rue St. Denis"; i can't locate the record in my collection, but i know it's here somewhere because i played it - about two years ago - to someone who had not heard of carmel, and they - like everyone i've introduced it to down the years - were blown away by it's seedy yet majestic power, if anyone knows where this criminally neglected masterpiece can be downloaded from, PLEASE let me know

  • @marc23133 u are right it is Rue St Denis(dance mix)

I have just found the 12" stuck inside a 12" Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird.....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.then my 15 year old daughter asked what was that i was holding......

  • @baldystewart erm... very

  • @baldystewart very!

  • @baldystewart this is awesome...:)...

  • @baldystewart

    too good for my youth.

    unsurpassable!!

  • I was very fortunate to see Carmel in Cardiff 1983 at the Showboat Tremorfa. She was excellent!

  • i am really lucky cos i seen her on totp a few times

  • thanks so much for posting. bought the extended version of this on 12" vinyl when it originally came out. had never heard it, but was intrigued when i saw that steve nieve (from elvis costello and the attractions) plaed the keyboards. the song blew me away at first listen. i'll be fifty this summer and this song sounds as great and fresh as ever. great song to play when you're in a funk. all boils down to the last line to me, " i'm giving you hope".

  • Great -puts duffy and Winehouse in the shade.

  • sigh

  • thousands of thanks me friend

  • mighty mighty fine

check out my youtubepage..have some fabolous carmel nuggets, old tv appearences

    stevenwonder36...

  • and this is exactly why I just love youtubes: rediscovering the best of the best music EVER! I was 15 when Carmel sang this and now at the age of 40 I'm getting chills all over again! what an unbelievable sound and voice!!! eat your heart out, Duffy and Amy (tho I love you girls as well)!

  • Great song. Great memories of 1983. I used to have the 6 minute long version on Napster. Anyone off here got that?

  • Just seen Duffy on a documentary about Rough Trade and it reminded me to look up Carmel here because everyone seems to have forgotten her when I point out the similarites. While I think that's she's pretty good, I don't think Duffy's in the same league as Carmel. I needed to prove the point to my kids and they are all in agreement with me for a change!

By the way, its brilliant to find some postings on YouTube that don't involve everyone being nasty and threatening to each other.

  • Yes Duffy got all the awards at Brits 2009 but Carmel would wipe the floor with her - lol

  • She is so much better than Duffy and Whinehouse (not a spelling mistake!).

Carmel rocks my world (or Jazzes my world lol)

  • Loved Carmel, have her greatest hits Cd and love this song, yeah Duffy reminds me of her but nowt like the original lady of modern Jazz

  • Ah Carmel! Duffy isn't fit to shine ya shoes, sweetheart.

  • Beautiful, the best of the 80's ever...

    She's so wonderful.

  • did she have a dauter called duffy great voice and i know i cant spell

  • Simply one of the BEST albums of the 80s, and one of my FAVORITE LPs of all time! I wish Carmel would reform and tour the US? I don't think they ever came here...well, at least I have my DRUM IS EVERYTHING LP and CD!

  • i still have my 'drum is everything' lp too!

  • MESSINA concerto ex gasometro

    chi c'era ricorderà

    ballavamo sotto l'acqua

  • i was just watching the first episode of "Cracker" and this song was heard in the background.

  • It was carmel first, then - long after - came duffy :-)

  • can anybody help me does anyone have the album carmel the drum in cd or has made a cd of a vinyl that will make a super fan super happy thanx!!!!! pm my mail cheers!!

  • check out my profile have some new well old live clips of carmel

loads more rare ones to put up soon

  • amy who?(10)

  • Great, used to drink in the Rock Garden together in Glasgow. Great Song. What a Singer. If this girl walked on to X Fator now, her voice would steal the show.

  • thanks so much for this x

  • Good God.....my parents and siblings hated me at the time the LP came out. I drove em crazy cuz I sang along the "aahoos" all day.

    Never had finer "bad days".......ahoo..hoo...

  • Great! Also for the way she looks, the skipants we wore at that time, I almost forgot about them! Carmel is the best. I wanted be like her when I was 18.

  • 'neoglobal' thanks for the tip off! Just favourited Mercy live in Bologna '87 from 'MrCudega'.Recommended to all Carmel fans.

  • Carmel is my name :D

  • Carmel is unique and the world of music needs her. Her voice is stunning and should be heard by all, thanks Carmel for many happy hours listening and please come back to the studio.

  • Hearing Duffy (in tv, not looking) reminded me of Carmel. Then my old record player (still have it) found something to do.

Then I realised: search for Carmel. And I found a lot. A lot. And it made meeee soooo haaaaapppyyyyy. Tänks duffi.

  • tey have diffrent voices, duffy's voice is too girly

  • Superior to Duffy I'd say - far more emotion in the voice!

  • She is amazing ,top performance such a one off artist,

amazing singer, im amazed this hasnt been sampled to f@ck,

infact im gonna rinse it now.

  • Still wonderful.

Duffyś voice is lot like Carmels.

  • HHHHHeey ! my long lost song, thank you so much!! (see Alicia Keys isn't that much of a pioneer!)

  • Have been waiting for this song for years... thanks for posting. As already said :

    Duffy = Carmel

  • So funny you should say that, I was just watching 'mercy' and thought about this song and searched as a result. They are So alike.

    Thanks for posting the videos!

  • carmel the original duffy?????

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting these Carmel videos! You have done a good thing!

  • you can see where Duffy gets her "thing" from

  • THE DRUM IS EVERYTHING WAS DECADES AHEAD OF ITS TIME. and still hasnt been praised by snob music critics yet. so..it's a joy for us still!!

    yes!

is there a video of rue saint denis?!?

  • Please, please someone post Mercy on Youtube. Is there a petition somewhere I could sign? I signed up just so I could make that comment.

  • Mercy is soooo good.I also sign!

  • some kind soul has posted it now! From a live gig - search Carmel Mercy and you will find Mercy and lots of other fantastic track of Carmel and a big band, live in italy

  • What a song, I bought this as soon as i heard it all those years ago. Alicia Keys in my opinion has a bit of explaining to do, because i suspect, her so called 'classic' Fallin' owes a debt to Bad Day. I hope the DJ Trevor Nelson is reading this, as he raves so much about Alicia Keys' Fallin

  • I love this song. Carmel should have been a HUGE star.

  • Is anybody knows something about Carmel today ? I can find anything about her. What did she become ? Thanx for answers.

  • She's still performing. She's on myspace as carmelband. :)

  • Many thanx for the answer ! I must see that...

  • First heard carmel in the early 80s,, could never understand how they did not go on to become massive..

  • just gave my first ever rating, 5 stars, naturally
