  • this happened 10 years ago

  • heartbreaking.

  • God, was HAL actually afraid?

  • Humans as Machines, Machines as humans.

  • I speak a bit French and I think in French this scene is almost as disturbing as in English.

  • me:SHUT UP HAL! *smashes his red light lite*

  • Very powerful & emotional sceen of the movie I think , when I was at the theatre's seeing this I was starting to tear up a bit here 4 HAL

  • uhhh... :S english version is much better... :S i know its hard to translate but the important thing is the contrast between the voice without feelings and the words full of feelings...

  • C'est la voix digitalisée d'un individu fumeur plutôt bonhomme et dans la quarantaine?

just 2 word : superb and magic

  • I'm french and i can assure you that Hal french voice is unbelievably haunting !!!

  • I don't speak French, so I don't know if it works or not. The guy who they chose for the English version had the perfect voice for the creepy HAL.

  • weeeeiiirrrd

  • What is that? Dubbing?

    This is no HAL!!!

  • I'm sorry, but all I heard was "Ribbit, Ribbit."

    More like ribbit robot amirite?

  • @QuietReckoning No, just you stupid fucking American rednecks.

  • @SvalbardJanMayen1976

What an eloquent and sagacious reply.

You're grasp of English is tenuous at best, isn't it?

  • I'm sorry, but this simply does not work in French.

  • Better French than Spanish :-)

  • This is the greatest part of this movie!

    "Please, Stop.. Dave"

    i miss Mr. K!

  • Respect.

  • No me gusta el sonido del video.

  • fuck

  • funny stuff

  • You can be french and watch subtitled movies, both versions are avaiable. I am pretty sure most french people who watch this kind of movie watch the subtitled version.

  • i concur

  • subtitles suck arse .. in fairness

  • For a while I changed my computer desktop language to French in order to speed up the learning. Suddenly all the dialogue boxes got wider. Same thing is happening here. "Je vous en prie" and "Please" just don't sound the same. And then there's that stupid husky monotone that French voiceover people use for absolutely every male character there ever was in an English language movie. I'm off to find the English version.

  • Me:*While unscrewing hal's little memory thingies*

    SHUT THE CRUD UP HAL!!!!!

    Hal:*DIES*

  • The sequel explains it all...

  • If you looked at the info you'd see that he clearly wrote it was in french

  • can someone explain to me what the movie is about?

  • something wonderful.

  • haha, Rock Hudson said that after seeing this movie.

  • i haven't seen it yet.only a part of it on TCM.and i think i get the messages but i can't be sure about something i've never seen as a whole.

  • the whole message in in the last 15 minutes of the film so if you've seen that then you're probably good

  • I thought 7 ages of man

  • What?

  • Wow you are a fucking idiot. Kubrick was mainly jewish.

  • I saw this film for the first time this morning, absolutely incredible. I just listened to Daisy Bell and felt like crying for HAL. It's so silly.

  • Ok....futurama parodied it....i was using lexis that even the most retarded youtube commenter might understand. Did you really have to be that pedantic?

  • HAL = evil IBM

  • HAL = evil Windows Vista seems to be more fitting, to me.

  • yeah, but Windows Vista did not exist at the time...

  • Kubrick is basically "hinting" at us (the audience) about how to eradicate the corrupt hierarchy that controls every aspect of our lives with technology. As bowman says, "We'll have to trick him (them). We'll have to cut his higher brain functions without disturbing the purely automatic and regulatory systems." Maybe it means that technology is not bad or evil but the corrupt people who programed HAL are the real enemy of humanity.

  • "Maybe it means that technology is not bad or evil but the corrupt people who programed HAL are the real enemy of humanity." - JR

I agree JR, but here`s the million $ question : Why did NASA want to kill the astonauts in the first place ? I got my own answer I want to hear yours.

  • what are all those card things?

  • Probably HAL's memory banks.

  • They are HAL's higher brain-function modules. HAL is basically getting a lobotomy.

  • lol, futurama stole this scene for in their spaceship when she goes crazy!

  • There's a difference between parody and stealing, silly. :p

  • no wonder h.a.l. went crazy, it was a nazi f(_)ck....

  • no, he went crazy because he was given conflicting orders. this is explained in 2010

  • Word. You can't tell it to keep the orders a secret whie telling it not to distort information. They basically taught HAL how to lie

  • damn, it breaks the heart when HAL is "murdered" but when a human dies, only says " terminated"

  • Poor Hal :(

  • German Version is best, he sings: Hänschen Klein ...

  • The guy is hanging on wires suspending him about his centre of gravity to make him seem floating in weightlessness and the editing cuts are to hide the wires.

  • We need the English version of this scene! [2]

  • Good afternoon...gentleman...I am a HAL 9000 computer....I became operational at the HAL on 12th January 1992....my instructor was Mr Langley and he taught me to sing a song....if you'd like to hear it, I can sing it for you....its called "Daisy"..etc.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAL

    Wellcome to your sixteen!

    (Today is 12th January 2008)

  • Wow. I never thought I would actually get this scene in french... But still, I prefer the english version even if I speak french.

  • I think this is the most beautiful scene in all history of cinema. The death of machine is so poingnant...

  • The best scene!!!!

  • i think its funny at the end where HAL sings ^^

  • great scence , tks 2 post it

  • Argh. We need the English version of this scene!

  • I do speak some French, and let me tell you, it's way creepier en francais... He says "I'm scared" about 500 times. Plus, English Hal is not sexy -- French Hal's voice is. Weird...!

  • Really, Jeanne. These French are " hot ". . . The voice of HAL in French is really sexy. . . he he

  • I speak French and I find it funny that you think this is sexy... Lol. To me, it sounds like an old boring man.

  • great scene, lol sadly i dont speak french thanks for putting it up though

  • I love this scene.

Unhappily I only get this with french audio.

Do you know it in english on the net?

    Thank you Spin.

  • what version is this? sounds like...italian
