Most likely, it was part of a pact, seeing as Andrew wasn't contributing creatively (which is where the money'$ at, of course), and this was the surest way, from a business standpoint, to keep Andrew with a roof over his head and Toblerone in his pocket. Because the royalties for "Careless Whisper" are, to this day, just ridiculous!! He is most certainly living off them still!

Do you remember when George announced the breakup, some weeks after "I'm Your Man" hit in the U.S. ... and Andrew was upset, having heard the news from the media, and coming earlier than he'd expected (remember, the plan according to George was to do one more Wham! LP, the lead-off single of which was to be "Wham Shake!" Andrew's comment was "He can do as he likes from now on, as far as I'm concerned."
Andrew supposedly cowrote one song, but other than that he did absolutley nothing in that band. George Michael had to end that mini Milli Vanilli thing he had going on being in Wham! Wham was George Michael using Andrew as a sex symbol on the album covers and in the videos!
@elizaji .... I surmise that there was probably a bit more songwriting credit for Andrew forthcoming with another Wham! LP, and the premature breakup precluded any further chance of that. Which explains his attitude the day he was apprised of the situation by that interviewer. (He "came around" very quickly though, as I recall, still reticent in some interviews, but ultimately in full support of George's decision.)

@elizaji ...yes, that co-writing credit has always mystified me. Most likely, it was part of a pact, seeing as Andrew wasn't contributing creatively (which is where the money'$ at, of course), and this was the surest way, from a business standpoint, to keep Andrew with a roof over his head and Toblerone in his pocket. Because the royalties for "Careless Whisper" are, to this day, just ridiculous!! He is most certainly living off them still!

@elizaji ... Yes, we do! :) And how smart was that! That took quite a lot of foresight. Do you remember when George announced the breakup, some weeks after "I'm Your Man" hit in the U.S. ... and Andrew was upset, having heard the news from the media, and coming earlier than he'd expected (remember, the plan according to George was to do one more Wham! LP, the lead-off single of which was to be "Wham Shake!" Andrew's comment was "He can do as he likes from now on, as far as I'm concerned."

Andrew supposedly cowrote one song, but other than that he did absolutley nothing in that band. George Michael had to end that mini Milli Vanilli thing he had going on being in Wham! Wham was George Michael using Andrew as a sex symbol on the album covers and in the videos!

@elizaji .... I surmise that there was probably a bit more songwriting credit for Andrew forthcoming with another Wham! LP, and the premature breakup precluded any further chance of that. Which explains his attitude the day he was apprised of the situation by that interviewer. (He "came around" very quickly though, as I recall, still reticent in some interviews, but ultimately in full support of George's decision.)

Andrew still made millions off Wham in the 80's but I am sure he has kept making millions off that songwriting credit! But if you look at George's net worth, I doubt it keeps him up at night putting his close friends name on there with his. Who knows, maybe Andrew did have some small contribution, even a suggestion to change or modify a piece of it?
