  • What always strikes me about this piece is how Fate moves from an 'it' in stanza 3 to a 'she' by stanza 4. Marvell almost seems to realise that his determination to ratiocinate guarantees that he will get the metaphysics instead of the girl.

    Marvell does a good line in disappointment, so does Rochester. I'm glad I wasn't young back then.
