Thank-you for this one. I have been looking for this tune for some time-Saw them during the 25th Anniversary tour, this one stuck out of all the vocal numbers.
@BoudiccaBlanc I know! XD I speak Irish (fluently, may I add) and if you don't mind me saying this ... You spelt Gaelige wrong! The way you spelt it was like 'Gaelic' the football game. Just saying :)
BTW, I saw Altan in Pittsburgh several years ago. It was at this Irish center, which had a statue of St. Patrick on the stage. The statue's arms were outstretched at waist height with the hands in the supine position. So the lead singer and fiddler had a husband who is now deceased but was in the band at the time. And he was conversing with the statue statue, saying things like, "Hey, give me five, fellow!" It was rather amusing.
Okay, so I was right. Altan does use a concertina. I would often think as I listened to their songs that there was something else there besides one or two fiddles. Unless you listen carefully, a concertina can sound a lot like a fiddle. So now I know.
On their recordings they use a lot of different instruments, including a lot of Jerry Douglas' dobro and even the digiridoo (sp?!?!). Their live performances are much sparse, and in my opinion, more traditional and awesome.

Button accordion, actually. Not a concertina. Dermot Byrne is brilliant on the box.

Lots of experience and pub playing (pubs can make for cramped quarters) is my guess. Being Altan doesn't hurt either.
