The scientific process is trivial. I think you should be more concerned with what scientific theories are. Yes, they are based on facts, but they also are based on laws--there is a difference. Example: a mutation that makes a deer run SLOWER is a detrimental mutation. Chances are that the deer will get eaten by predators before it passes on its genes (produces offspring).

But a mutation that allows the deer to run FASTER gives it a better chance to avoid predators and a better chance to pass on their genes.

Um...Actually, my understanding is that what defines a species is when the barrier to reproduction is erected. I.E. members of the same species can interbreed, but as soon as a descendant of that species cannot interbreed with the initial population, it is classified as a new species.
