by the way, everyone, the violin playing at the beginning is a reference to the original novel in chapter 5: the enchanted violin, when christine agreed to meet erik in the churchyard that her father was buried in, and erik was going to play "the resurrection of lazarus" on the violin that her father was buried with. then raoul snuck out and followed them and saw erik for the first time.. not that anyone cares.

Many people compare Sarah Brightman and Emmy Rossum and there always saying sarah is better however i disagree. Sarah brightman is a better singer by far but Emmy Rossum captures the youth and innocence of christine. furthermore the phantom tells Christine she "has much still to learn if pride will let her return to me her teacher" i dont think Sarah brightman sounds as if she has more to learn as her voice is perfect. Emmy Rossum however still does and she is much more suited to be Christine.

Contrary to almost EVERYBODY,I was rooting for Raoul the whole time.The Phantom is just so creepy and.I don't doubt that he loves her but Raoul and Christine seem so...connected.Its cute that Raoul came in to save her,cuz the whole red light inside of the mausoleum was really scaring me.
At the end,I started crying because in these kinds of movies the girl usually goes for the other one,so I thought she was going to be with the phantom.I cried with joy when Christine and Raoul got together.

Kay's Phantom might have won.. he would be just as likely if not more likely to wait for Raoul to fall into a trap or take him out from ambush with a lasso as to face him though.. so its arguable. Also. he lived a totally different life in that version of the story. here he was rescued from the freak show and hidden under the opera house as a child, where he's been ever since. He would have been no match for Raoul. Sad, if you are Team Eric, but true.

Probably, Schumacher wanted to make Raul the worthy opponent equal on force to the Phantom. In the book Raul is weak as the little girl. It doesn't make a competition to a phantom, therefore there were no such deep effect from Christines choice.
I've never seen the movie; there have been made too many changes. One of them is the size of the mask (how deformed can Erik be with such a mask?), the other is the rearranging of scenes like this: stupid swordfights and cutting in the music (those who've seen the musical shall know that lots of the musical lyrics are missing).
@07burgerqueen that's one of my beefs with this movie too.. the original phantom's makeup was some of the best ever done in film.. people fainted when he was unmasked. You won't get that kind of reaction from a modern audience, but in this version the phantom's "deformity" looks like a bad case of acne. There is nothing to warrant him being displayed as a freak as a child, the audience would be going "My kid looks worse than that some days.. I want my money back!!"
I agree with Ihkueren; I thought exactly the same thing. Erik would never been defeaten. He would defeat Raoul. So it would be more believeble when Erik got the upperhand and let Christine beg for mercy for Raoul's soul.
Does anybody else think that it's pretty stupid that he has the phantom on the ground completely at his mercy then just gets on his horse and leaves then the very next scene is them coming up with a way to catch him?
Honesty, Phantom did a better job fight than Raoul. Reasons: Raoul's sweating like a pig while Phantom skin is much dryer, Raoul's got careless and so he got cut, Phantom constantly moving around to confuse his oponent.
@faith6751 Can't tell you where the phantom's sword came from.. But if I were Raoul I would have kept my sword on me after "Why So Silent" so I wouldn't have to just leave Christine again to go get my sword the next time the phantom showed himself.
I think it would have been best if they just combined the swordfight with the fireball scene (and made Raoul run away like he's supposed to). They could've made it very intense that way and it would have been awesome to watch :P

what people don't seem to realize is the fact that you cannot compare film to theater. they are two completely different mediums that are both wonderful in their own rights. therefore to waste time comparing the stage versions of the play and the movie is just stupid and pointless. so shut up and if you don't like it, don't watch it. it's as simple as that.

This is such a stupid scene. Letting Raoul get the upper hands demolishes the idea of the Phantom's character. Raoul and Christine RUN AWAY. I'm not saying this just because I'm an Eric fan, but that it really soils the Phantom's domineering power. It's not until he is unmasked that his "spell" is supposed to be broken. I didn't mind the other extras in the movie (most derived from the book), or how they rearranged some things, but the sword fight really gets me. I always skip to the next scene.

Gerard should have got an award for this movie. His performance is incredible. Every time I watch the film I am speechless, I can't stop staring at him. I hope the future holds for him acknowledgement for his great talent, he deserves it!

One of them is the size of the mask (how deformed can Erik be with such a mask?), the other is the rearranging of scenes like this: stupid swordfights and cutting in the music (those who've seen the musical shall know that lots of the musical lyrics are missing).

@07burgerqueen that's one of my beefs with this movie too.. the original phantom's makeup was some of the best ever done in film.. people fainted when he was unmasked. You won't get that kind of reaction from a modern audience, but in this version the phantom's "deformity" looks like a bad case of acne. There is nothing to warrant him being displayed as a freak as a child, the audience would be going "My kid looks worse than that some days.. I want my money back!!"

I agree with Ihkueren; I thought exactly the same thing. Erik would never been defeaten. He would defeat Raoul. So it would be more believeble when Erik got the upperhand and let Christine beg for mercy for Raoul's soul.

Honesty, Phantom did a better job fight than Raoul. Reasons: Raoul's sweating like a pig while Phantom skin is much dryer, Raoul's got careless and so he got cut, Phantom constantly moving around to confuse his oponent.

@faith6751 Can't tell you where the phantom's sword came from.. But if I were Raoul I would have kept my sword on me after "Why So Silent" so I wouldn't have to just leave Christine again to go get my sword the next time the phantom showed himself.

I think it would have been best if they just combined the swordfight with the fireball scene (and made Raoul run away like he's supposed to). They could've made it very intense that way and it would have been awesome to watch :P

@Gernam12 Lol well remember Webber is the one who thought itd be intimidating for the phantom to shoot fireballs at raoul from on top of ivy. So I think they both thought up this idea. Seriously though this sword fight made me absolutely lose it in the theatre. On top of both men wearing nearly nothing, their hair flying around at 2:25 Eric gives Raoul a girly shove. Really?! How can people still call Raoul a fop when hes bleeding and the phantom fell down? Bad directing. Oy.

what people don't seem to realize is the fact that you cannot compare film to theater. they are two completely different mediums that are both wonderful in their own rights. therefore to waste time comparing the stage versions of the play and the movie is just stupid and pointless. so shut up and if you don't like it, don't watch it. it's as simple as that.

I'd be delighted to have a friend like Erik.
Sometimes I really feel like lost and helpless wandering child and it would be great to have someone who would understand my feelings and guide me. Plus he's got super strength :D If you have someone so powerful by your side there's no one and nothing that you have to dread.
However, I don't understand why so many people hate Raoul...he was just trying to protect the women he loved. what's wrong with it ? ( I'm team Phantom , but still..)

Im not liking all this hatin' on Raoul. Yeah, he's annoying, but he's just trying to save his fiance from her murderous, masked stalker. How's he s'posed to know that he's a sensitive guy?
And yeah, I hate the way this fight played out. It should have been Erik winning, about to kill Raoul and then angrily running away in compliance to christine's wish to spare Raoul. Erik is the PHANTOM, he doesn't loose to fancy-boy.

This is such a stupid scene. Letting Raoul get the upper hands demolishes the idea of the Phantom's character. Raoul and Christine RUN AWAY. I'm not saying this just because I'm an Eric fan, but that it really soils the Phantom's domineering power. It's not until he is unmasked that his "spell" is supposed to be broken. I didn't mind the other extras in the movie (most derived from the book), or how they rearranged some things, but the sword fight really gets me. I always skip to the next scene.
