This first scene had me terrified for weeks. So incredibly scary. And it's interesting because it's really your own imagination which makes it so scary. If you try to make a movie like this today, it wouldn't last because sadly the majority of people today need everything handed to them on a silver platter. They don't want to have to use their brain to be scared, it needs to be obvious and loud and bloody. *sigh* I wish more movies were made like this!

Yeah, SLASHER flicks never scared me...there just predictable and messy ! Now this could so happen to someone. And to think the call is coming from the house too ! One of the most terrifying experiences!!! What did you consider to be a SMART scary/suspenseful movie ( A" Smart" movie definition: One that kept you guessing and/or the ending took you by surprise). I think this movies beginning is the only good part. It's so f** king scary because it happens in a small house in a suburb not some huge mansion in the middle of nowhere. It's more real .I've lived in houses like that one my whole life. The rest of the movie after they catch the psycho is so f** king boring and stupid in my opinion. The remake was ok but this beginning is scarier than the whole remake.

This was one of the better entries to come out of the late seventies / early eighties "slasher" genre. Hardly any blood at all. It relied on building tension and character development. The film score, as well as acting and direction, puts this above most of the other films like this. Some genuinely tense, scary moments. The ending is a dusey!

The remake is lots better, a lot scarier and... well, it is not as forced as this "movie". It appears more like a poorly assembled school play to me, very rushed, there is almost no explanation as to where who is coming from and doing what for which purpose. Also, they fail tremendously in building up the tension here.
