Although highly linear, more so than FFX, I loved FFXIII. I liked FFXII too though, especially toward the end. Penelo will always be one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters. :) I think that's what draws me into any FF game is its characters, which is probably why I liked XIII. Despite its not letting you ever stray from the main story until you're nearly finished, the characters were amazing to me. :)

I hated FF12. In theory, I thought I would have loved it for all the open-ended stuff and setup choices, but I think there's a fine balance that needs to be struck between that and limiting the player. I got bored of it when I had been playing for 10 hours and had only gotten through two or three story areas. It's pretty hard to get behind Vaan as a character, too, heh.

With 12, they took 11's battle system and put it into a story driven game. With 13, they seem to have adjusted it, but kept it similar to 12's system in some sense. The ATB system that existed as early as 4 persisted into FFX and X-2, but then it just went away when 11 came around.

in my humble opinion, Final Fantasy 12 is the best Final Fantasy since 6. The story, music and the composition of the game was very well done, the gameplay was a bit MMOish but I didn't let that detract from the experience. The rest of the FF's (7-9) are decent RPG's at best. Linearity, the recycled characters and storylines ruined it for me personally. I thought FF10 was GOD awful.. but Square redeemed themselves with 12. Just my opinion. Also, the rent is too damn high.
