  • I'm glad this guy came along, he can explain things about music theory in a way that even a dummy like me can understand it. :)

  • fact: if you mention Paul Gilbert I am even more interested in what you have to say.

  • Iam that guy, been studying scales and theory but can't pull it off "off the cuff" this years resolution is to jam the theory into my playing (I mean jam as in jamming with a looper) very insightful from Guthrie there

  • I went to one of his lessons/aristocrats concerts and someone asked a similar question.

He said that when learning music, it starts to become a second language. You have "rules" you follow and put stuff together in a certain order. But your first language is nothing like that. You know all the tricks and don't have to think about "okay I need a subject, make sure not to end on a preposition". The sound needs to be something that you can naturally express without breaking the flow to think.

  • This guy is the best of the best! i've never seen a guitarist so well balanced!

    awesome!

  • guthrie ....one of the worlds great guitar philosophers....students: listen

  • I am SO GLAD I am not the only one who thought about theory this way! Very helpful!

  • its been like this for me also

i love playing music but playing music shouldn't require manual thinking about all the notes and stuff

i discovered chords and "scales" while playing along to songs in my bedroom and then people tell me what they are, but still i lack knowledge in music theory.

Its the same thing with other stuff, like maths, learning a equation to work out a length of side, angle but not knowing how to put it into practice in variable circumstances

  • Guthrie! Such a savant type, not autistic, but just a freak of natural learning and gifted intelligence, you see his odd movements and mannerisms, his exceptional powers of observation. I too have some gifts of the autistic mind, but for different crafts and uses than GG, but I learn naturally, in often bizarre ways and can analyze things compulsively at times. Guthrie Govan, he's like the Rain Man, without the screaming and he doesn't hang with Tom Cruise. Both good things. GG! :D!!!!!

  • The sudden smiles really adds to the picture of him being a great guy in every sense.

  • How he teaches and talks about the guitar reminds me so much of Paul Gilbert and it's funny as I write this he just gave him a shoutout.

  • 1:12 Cute

  • i'm in love with this man... and.... his scruffy beard.. PG!!!

  • "Sound first" - 'nuff said. :)

  • I like how he ends each question with a shrug.

  • You don't teach a child to speak by giving it a book to read.

  • hes like a Sean Connery younger brother... anybody else see the resemblance...his voice, the way he talks and they also look alike, apart from hair style :)...

  • those days? how old is he?

  • @jareds1007 he's 85!

  • i love this man answers with a lot of sense and he doesn't pretend to know more than he know is like man i just play guitar!

  • i first learned chords and the basic minor pentatonic then i learnt the major scale then the keys but i still have the modes and a alot of other stuff left =)

  • Let this guy rewrite the book. This has gotta apply to other instruments as well.

  • hahahaha! he's answers are brilliant i love this guy

  • Clearly a genius. Dangit.

  • so how can I find the sound in the library or the internet if I don't know what I am looking for ? I think that he means more, learn some basic theory, at lleast the note names and then search for chords that you come up with.

  • this guy is awesome + he mentioned PG which makes him even more awesome.

  • @MorganRNReid PAUL GILBERT!!!!! guthrie is definitely a god

  • @MorganRNReid YAY!!! :D

  • yeah .... learning theory and not knowing what is for .... is a death trap ...

I really amazed with guthrie's process to become a guitar player ...

heard sound, found it in your fret board, and went to a library to find out what theory was ... (note: there was no internet in those days !!)

  • @thegreatgarry

thanks for telling us what guthrie has already said and what 90% already knew about

  • @thegreatgarry Thanks for that you parrot.

  • @thegreatgarry I'm thinking more and more (also as I listen and understand more of the blues), that the internet is useful, but also distracting. Reddit.com, a huge distraction.

  • That's good to know, can get so caught up in theory.
