  • can a deccoder be fitted to any analogue locomotive or does it have to be dcc ready?

  • @visvamoorthy Most analogue locomotive's yes, as well as all DCC ready loco's.

  • I agree that static can damage chips, but your decoder is in the bag, and your handling the plug without an atistatic wrist band attatched to earth so the bag as it is in your video isn;t going to help. Any static that you have is going to gain access to the chip via your fingers. I use ESU chips and have had no problem at all, and speaking as an electronics engineer, your chip has a sleeve on it so unless you touch any exposed contacts on the decoder you will be all right.

  • @MrGeordiesteam Thank you. Good to hear your hints & tips, much appreciated. kind regards.

  • do u know the sleaves that come with some dcc ready trains to fit over the decoder ,do u put them on??

  • @itgamer100 Yes, put i leave a air gap at both ends.Cheers.

  • so when u got the train it was like a dc train

  • Yes that's correct. On the box it shows "DCC ready" which means ready to be converted or to DCC as shown in the video. Cheers.

  • thanks again mate i need that info because im getting dcc ready train ill need to converte to dcc and hopefully ill be doing that more and more to my locos

  • Glad this has been of help, kind regards.

  • Good video. Thanks for putting in the effort. One point though....

If you want to be sure about not giving your decoder a STATIC LOBOTOMY, use a STATIC STRAP. They are cheap & available form any electronics store or good Hobby Shop.

Touching the unprotected eight pin plug can cause a Static discharge to the decoder, & the bag will provide NO PROTECTION at all!.

  • Thank you, many thanks for the good advice :-). Will look into getting that static strap. Kind regards.

  • Thanks for de-mystifying DCC for me.

    Lovely pace ...

    Thanks again.

    Rob

  • Thank you, regards.

  • Hi. Everybody, Whatever else you do with your locos: DON'T FORGET TO CUT THE PURPLE WIRE!!!! I have written off a brand new DMU cos i forgot to cut the wire and it burnt out all the other wires leading to the motor. (Great video btw!)

  • Thank you, sorry to hear about the DMU. Hope it can be repaired. Regards.

  • No Prob. Hornby are going to take back the DMU and repair it. (Don't know if there will be a charge yet!)

  • They are pretty good. Quite a quick turn around. :-) Cheers.

  • similar thing happend to me, i got a brand spanking new one free of charge

  • Yes, the TCS decoders are pretty good, even more so with that warranty, cheers.

  • where do you solder it???

  • You don't. You just remove the blanking plug & simply plug in the decoder. The older models need soldering. See Hornby's website for details on soldering the decoder, on their older model's. Cheers.

  • Can you put a decoder into a Hornby Railroad locomotive?

  • Yes. Some are DCC ready like the loco here. Others in the Railroad Range, you'll have to solder the decoder in. Cheers.

  • so dcc ready locos dont come with a decoder??? and also with dcc do you just need on wire from the main to electrify the whole layout??

  • If it say's DCC on board, they are factory fitted with a decoder. If it say's DCC ready, then it means, it's ready to be converted to DCC. Cheers.

  • Cheers Mates

  • Okay

  • Is this fr fitting on to old Hornby trains?

  • That is kool how hornby has changed through out the years i like that

  • This model is actually a Bachmann, but Hornby is very similar to these. Cheers.

  • awsome!1

  • Cheers, hope this is of some help to you. Cheers again.

  • could you show a video on how to retro fit dcc decoders maybe you could show your apt perhaps?

  • Its on my to do list, so will be doing a video on that. For the APT i'll need 3 decoders, one for the motor & also one for each end of the train for the lights. Cheers.

  • it will be nice and simple then lol

  • It should be (I hope), cheers.

  • does this loco have cab lights and head lights?

  • Yes it has both, cheers.

  • great vid! great to watch, very helpfull!!!!!

  • Many thanks mate,I hope it'll help any one who is intrested in DCC.Cheers.

  • this is making me very tempted to convert my trains to DCC!

  • :-) Hope this video helps. The older loco's that aren't DCC ready you have to get the old soldering iron out, to connect the wires to the motor(orange & grey)& to the pick ups(red & black).I think you'll really like DCC if you do convert.Cheers

  • that is a great bit of info mate thanks!

  • No probs mate.Many thanks for watching.Cheers

  • Wow many thanks mate. With the Hornby class 50 very carefully pull the ETH off either front end or the side. The 50 body just unclips.knew you'd like the 50 lamo heh heh hee. That 50 is still awaiting conversion to DCC.I hope this has helped in showing how to fit a decoder.Regards, Cheers

  • Thanks Iain Nice Video

  • thanks for the vid matey, i needed this

  • Glad you've found this of help.Cheers & regards.

  • very useful,,, VERY.

  • Hope this helps,kind regards & cheers.

  • Nice one mate, very well explained. The loose purple wire had me scratching my head when I first came to deal with a decoder.
