  • your crazy to pay any one to do this

  • Typical bloody cowboy way of doing things.

  • They just destroyed a slate roof. The slates can no longer ventilate, moisture will be trapped for extended periods, a couple freeze/thaw cycles and the slates will delaminate rapidly. That's why you see slate and tile roofs that get painted delaminate and fail prematurely.

  • As a slate roofer for over 22 years, this application, in my expert opinion this is the worst thing you can do to your slate roof. You have now attached all of your slates together and to the battens. Now when you do have to repair a slate they are all stuck together. This will destroy your slate roof. The added cost to repair or replace your roof in the near future will be a lot more than what you will save in heating costs. If your slates are slipping call a slate roofer not an insulator.

  • On what materials it can be applied, I mean adhesion.

  • @penopolyuretan most any...so long as the surface is clean and dry...you can spray it to just about anything, I would avoid painted surfaces though

  • How much does a diy system like this cost? I'm planning to gut an old house and spray the exterior walls

  • hmm would stapling cardboard flats between the slate roof for a bit of air space and then foam help the slate breath?i was thinking of the insulation and the breathing problem also.i know they dont do this to a shingle roof because it would bake the shingles off of the roof

  • @tappakeggaday1 Just insulate the floor of the attic. Don't live in your attic.

  • @jbmnd93 so my idea in your expert opinion would have been the better option than directly spraying to the slate like i thought.I have hung fiberglass insulation for many years and have also had worked on roofs myself. And I thought this was a bad idea myself directly spraying to the slates.the baffle idea would have created an area or airspace between the slate and the insulation with some natural heat circulation between them.plenty of people live in attic spaces also, im not one though.

  • Hi Im considering using this faom on my slate roof. The roof has a bitumen layer underneath the slates but wanted to use the foam for added insulation. The thing im worried about is ventalation how much of the eaves do you lave and do you need any other ventilation higher up in the roof like ridge vents or other venting.

  • Hi Can you spray this on plastic.

  • That is guaranteed to kill that slate roof. The reason the slate lasts for centuries is because it gets to breathe. We put spray foam on the underside of a otherwise solid slate roof in NJ in the late 90's and the slate was totally deteriorated less than 10 years later. This is a great idea from the perspective of insulation and a horrible idea for your roof. If you want to do this, you have to install something to create an airspace between the slate and the insulation.

  • Hi , thanks for the feedback. We do stock the kits , if you have been quoted 3.5 k on your roof you may need further kits . Give us a call on 0800387877

  • Touch 'N Foam - 600 System - Spray Foam

    Also see shop: eps-systemsltd

they sell a froth pak, similar product

  • Got my DIY kit online for under £500 - Had a company in a priced my roof at nearly £3,500 and that was with discount otherwise over 4K. One of the few UK companies I could find:

    expandingfoamkits.co.uk

  • Are you not wearing eye protection?

  • DIY = shortcut = bad idea

  • @ArtisanTony , please ensure full prep is carried out and there is no reason why this will not prolong the life of your roof by 20 years. If you can afford 200 sq mtrs of french slate and a re roof , go for it i agree. But if you are on a budget then this is a ideal option. And as you can see we only applied a flashcoat. This meant eves were free for cross ventilation and all lathes were left to breath. Cheers

  • @Sprayfoam69 We have a saying in the construction business; "If it were easy, the homeowner would do it" Some things are best left to professionals :)

  • Did you do a thorough external overhaul of the roof to cure any leaks/ugly slates? Also, an important aspect to any roof is breathability. I would assume that the foam would trap moisture (i.e fungus+insects). Lastly, the part of the building that takes the brunt of the weather are the eaves and verges. If you cannot reach these parts with foam then those areas would become a hazard as the nails continue to weaken. Not impressed.

  • @robdbuck sorry for the delay rob buck, full prep is essential , this will not water proof your roof if you have leaks then you need to fix the leaks first. I am sure you will agree leaks are cracked or missing slates or damaged lead work, this all needs addressing. Also you will see that we do not encapsulate the lathes and we also leave the eves free for cross flow ventilation, the most important thing in a roof is ventilation.

  • That Spray Foam is expensive....If the US President Osama wants to help people to go Green, he should be giving the stuff away to Do-it-yourselfers....Like Solar, if it was not so expensive, lot more People would have Solar Powered Homes....

  • obama doesnt own any of the stuff

he can only take your money and buy the stuff for other people and that is all he can do.

  • @kchedville You are so right. It makes me sick. Five grand to do the first floor of a very small home. WTF ????

  • @kchedville the us president knows nothing about spray foam and doesnt produce it. he is not in the position to give anything to anybody. thats not the way our country works over here.

  • what a absolute travesty.. you idiots should pay that old couple to have that roof fixed.. i've only seen this done once and it took all day to fix 1 missing slate.. this does absolutely nothing to fix the leaks other than make roofers lives that much harder

  • Hi i am a slate roofer(girlfriends computer)

This system has no place on a slate roof.

Any leaks which occur are likely to go unnoticed and cause timber damage.Just because a slate cant slip doesn't mean the roof wont leak.

The worst part is the fact that when you decide to re roof it you will have to throw every slate away because they wont come off whole and you wont get that crap off the back anyway.

200sqm roof is approx 4000 slates. new welsh at around 2.50 = 10k just to buy the slates.

  • I agree, Welsh is best but there are alternatives, also if dry rot gets in that can be expensive too.

    DD Sheffield

  • @melanie7512 thanks for comment , i am a roofer too , and 10K was too much and as you can see all the lathes are left and eves left for ventilation, and yes this will not stop any leaks , you have to fix the leaks first then apply the foam to ensure not slate loss or splitting occurs. Its all in the prep.

  • I am a roofer & know this to be a bad idea,Water can get trapped, you have nothing around the eaves or gables.I geuss for a customer who knows no better they may think its good. Also if you need to replace a valley in years to come?dont ask.

  • i thought this was a french barn house? i seen this vid a while ago with the name french barn house?

  • Fact , all timbers and lathes left to breath, and this roof was 200 sq mtrs , and client was paying in excess of £300 every winter to overpiced roofers sometimes three times a year dependant on storms , they took advantage of his location and situation , this was sprayed 8 years ago , so the money he saves over the next twenty years he could pay for a new welsh slate roof and still have a few nice holidays .

  • Thanks for the comment, but this roof was quoted at £8000.00 for a full strip and re roof, the elderley couple did not have that kind of funding, that is why we recomended the striping system so slate can be removed at a later date , cost to client was around £1500 a fraction of re roof and since property was in france with external clips, slate may last centuries but fixings dont to see a hundred years out of a roof you have done well, it is all about budget.
