hint hint hint!!! if you have Irvine only attack with him first, tonberry's will use grudge only against him! when he can use his limit break use demi with squall and ? and then finish him with irvine. next battles use 3x demi from squall and ? and finish him off wit irvine.. no one dies except tonberry in 10 sec.!!
@GenericSteve764 Master Tonberry in the final dungeon of FF7. I'm citing this because I just played it again. THEY WILL RAPE YOU. WITH A KNIFE, AND THE ANGRY SOULS OF ALL THE FOES YOU'VE KILLED.
@PattehPatrick Lol yeah. I actually had squall completely deck'ed out at the time, and realized that one renzokuken would one shit the tonberry's hehe. So it went smooth from there.
i found using squall's limit break on both tonberry's and the king to be far more effective, and if he ever gets killed, the other two characters can simply revive him.
@kazuyax12 Sure it does. If you're playing a low level game and want to avoid getting EXP, the last thing you'd want is to get EXP because of a forced battle.
@kazuyax12 its because the higher your level the harder the game is so if you recieve a massive amount of experience from boss battles then you will get to a high level and struggle through the game and die more often
@kazuyax12 yeah but the enemy's level doesn't depend on your party's average level in FF7 it depends on where you are in the world thats why you didn't have a problem with that one
I HATED the magnetic cave in FF4. It always took forever to defeat the enemies, because I did diddly squat for damage. At least until FF4DS came around, where I discovered you could use rods as damage-causing items.
I hope we find out what Tonberry looks like "next time". He's my favorite GF. You can probably guess why. ^_^
I'm not sure if someone else pointed this out yet or not: The 'junk' attack is percentage based so basically if you had a lot more hp it could do up to 2000-3000, which could be a problem. Trust me I learned that the hard way the first time I played through the game.
Hey HCBaily I was wondering why didn't you draw deaths from the tonberrys. Its such an awesome spell to junction to your ST-Attack. As you said it would make you even more obscenely powerful lol
Hey HCBaily I was wondering why didn't you draw deaths from the tonberrys. Its such an awesome spell to junction to your ST-Attack. As you said it would make you even more obscenely powerful lol
The luck stat takes forever to max. And once you do, IIRC all it does is guarantee 9 Draws per Draw sequence instead of a randomly generated number from 1-9. There might be more to it's effects, but that's all I actually noticed it did when I maxed it after farming Tri-Faces for like...ever. Not THAT worth it, if you ask me. Unless there's more to it than I noticed. Didn't notice an increase in evasion or a decrease in random encounters.
You like the bosses and the one part of Pharos in FFXII that limit your abilities?
Myst 3 was okay, but it was more of a side story than something that advanced the overall plot. People probably complain about Myst 5 just like any series where expectations are too high on the last game in a series.
Odin is sitting just like Death in King's Quest 6, and is as huge, heh.
Ouch, that's the first time I've seen the party cut in half like that
This would be where normal people would get triple easily without the "Guide Dang it" knowledge to get it from cards, so for most people, this is where strength normally might start getting silly
You should use Tonberry at least once, it's pretty funny :D
Forgetting to remove your Enc-None ability and running around wondering WTF? Sounds like something NintendoCapriSun would do if he LP'd this game...heh.
And the idea of Tonberry King hitting you with whatever's on sale at Radio Shack and Walmart - funny as hell.
I remember my first run of FF8 years back. Oh man, I had no idea how to play the game correctly (What to junction, trying not to level up, Triple Triad). I spent FOREVER killing all those Tonberries because I didn't know gravity hit them. I eventually got to the King. The battle took a century and a half, and I was almost dead (Except Zell). No healing items left. In a last ditch effort, I kept limit breaking him. I won.
HCBailey, if you like having your characters' abilities restricted, you should play Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. They have a "laws" system that changes from battle to battle randomly that locks out abilities.
Actually, Sleipnir is supposed to have eight legs.
I don't see how that's practical, though. It would be a mess to gallop with all those legs to keep track of, but I suppose it would give the horse great traction...
Well, the legs are supposed to be four in front, four in back. Yeah, it would get great traction, I suppose. Who knows what the Norse were thinking when Sleipnir came into being.
@Doggejern Sleipnir is from Norse mythology, where Odin rides on his eight legged horse. It comes from when the dead were carried up to the piers on a wooden plank, with one guy on each corner. So four guys makes eight legs, thats where it comes from.
Quitis' degenerator or Squall's limit break is really the way to go here. It might be cheap but it'll save you twenty minutes of casting demi again and again.
@Vacheresseb I was under the impression that tonberry was immune to degenerator.
When I do this part, I just use quistis's micro magic limit break (1/2 hp, so if tonberry's have ~20k, it'll do 9999) then have squall renzo to finish it off).
Also, just sayin that meltdown is an AMAZING spell to use against tonberry king (and any other boss).
@Vacheresseb irvine's AP ammo is also good here, as is zell's duel, if you have been keeping up with the magazines and have a good spell junctioned to his STR
I have a question about the cards: If you mod a rare card like your Diablos card like you just did, are you able to get another one, or is the card gone for good?
@vorpalseraph you can get almost any card back (save pupu's card) back in disc 4 if you do the cc card group quest (which you saw hcbailey do recently in the last couple of episodes). That's why card modding them now doesn't really mean that much.
Using limit breaks on the Tonberries may be abusive, but it's a whole lot faster. Easily 4 times faster than using demi. It's possible to beat all 20 tonberries plus Tonberry King in the 20 minute time limit (assuming you save Odin for much later so that he doesn't interfere with other things like Angelo Search). Basically, a battle starts, you trigger Squall's limit, and that kills the tonberry. Rinse/repeat. You can leave and come back to reset the time limit though if you need to.
The junk attack (especially the bowl drop at the end) is a comedic-effect used by stand ups and other comedians in japan IIRC where they fall on someones head from out of nowhere for no reason.
@ParadoxialHippie He spent the last few minutes of the video fighting the Tonberry King, and before that its normal-sized, common counterpart, so I'll assume you meant "what does a Tonberry do?" (which HCBailey also sort of explained, but he didn't go into detail).
A Tonberry slowly inches towards you during battle (I think they usually attack you normally as they do so) and if they reach your party's side of the battlefield, they use a really powerful (insta-kill?) attack on one party member.
I'm surprised Odin does just sit there if there's still time on the clock..yet, it was likely designed with random encounters in mind so that you wouldn't have all that much time when you did face Odin.
Good to see Tonberries..well, yeah, they're a formidable foe, but that plus the Chocobos in the last episode give this game at the moment more of an old-school Final Fantasy feel. This King Tonberry, though..the one in FFVI is a lot harder. (aka Master Pug)
@Cyric1983 Odin is better than Gilgamesh though. Does that mean that if you wait until after the fight with Seifer you can get Odin and not loose him?
oh god....the tonberries. i spent a bit longer than hc on card games, so my stats were much higher....and they still royally owned me. of course, i just stuck with AP ammo limit breaks and renzokukens. when i got king, though, i was disappointed at how fast he dropped
I love the music played in the Centra Ruins, "Find Your Way". Musically, it epitomizes a mysterious and unexplored area. NightShader1 did a great piano cover of it here on Youtube.
HC, it says in my Strategy Guide here back in the day that you must defeat 18-22 Tonberries. (Page 171, BradyGames) You also forgot to mention he has Full-Life to Draw. I am waiting for you to get to the big underwater guy... I am having trouble...
@Ankhrae He did say so. "You can also mug a luck junction scroll from him I think.. but uhh.. nothing I really care about. I hate the luck stat anyway". At around 3:40
@spriddlez Ah damn! He did! My bad. I was probably writing my comment as he was saying that! I guess I just expected him to say it during the battle. It seemed like he'd forgotten.
your right, in Norse mythologies Sleipnir has eight legs, but square have been giving him six legs since final fantasy III. Also there actually is one dungeon that limits your abilities in this game, well sort off, the final dungeon takes away all of your abilities, GF, Magic, Draw, e.t.c. and you have to beat different bosses to get them back.
Haha Graphical glitches ftw! I didn't know you could get a Tonberry GF! Thanks for showing that HC.
The Tonberry encounters remind me of FFXI with the "Tonberry Hate". I think if you killed alot of Tonberries in a certain area in FFXI, I think the Tonberries are likely to aggro more, I think. It's been awhile so I don't know, if anyone knows about that please clearify.
@BlazingFireSoul It's for Everyone's Grudge. They'll aggro you regardless, depending on your level of course. But more tonberries killed means Everyone's Grudge does more damage to you. You can reset the amount by paying a specific NPC some gil, just so you don't get 1 shotted by them eventually.
ah i love these vids...last night i finished ff8 again having done everything and getting the most out of it (this lp taught me how to actually be good at triple triads) ...now its over i feel rather upset to be honest.
I usually have Squalls best limit by now, and keep him in the yellow. One of those limits with 100 Triples on Strength = dead toneberry in about 30 seconds
Come on HC, you should know since you are still a lower level that the bosses/enemies don't have as much HP. The higher l of a level you get, the more HP they have. But again, I am sure you know that.
Yep, Sleipnir definitely had eight legs, but since you know what Square are like with giving anything that should've had eight legs eight legs these days :P
yay tonberry XD i never used demi on him before xD i always try to get lionheart in disc 1 xD soooo i just use limit breaks with squall lol who will always die from the crappy everyones grudge lol
HCBailly, why ain't you working on the Stat Bonuses? It helps out your characters a lot, since you can focus more on juntioning stronger magic on you're weaker stats.
... The way your playing the game, you might not reach level 100 with any of your characters by the end of the game, but it is better than how they handle the stat bonuses on Final Fantasy VI.
9:30 Why is his crown floating on his head? That's a very good question...I say it's because it helps him become immune to Gravity attacks...why, because it must have some kind of special gravity device in it that not only allows it to float on his head but also blocks gravity attacks since it absorbs gravity...that's my guess...
9:48 The point of that attack is to SCREW UP YOUR EMULATOR...
@brainjuice654 If you're below level 30, you can draw Death, Life, and Cure (up to lvl 19) or Cura (lvl 20-29). If you're at level 30 or higher, you can draw Death, Curaga and Full-Life.
Only if his part is high enough lvl. Full-Life is better for HP or for Elem-def. Now that he has Tonberry, he can level up Gaylas on the Trabia continent and draw Meltdowns, which is better for Vit.
Do final fantasy games ever tell you stuff like this? Seriously, this is like one example out of hundreds. I'm not a fan either, but the designers have been pulling stunts like this for two decades.
thanks alot for making this video... on my past playthrough i never knew about the tonberry GF or how to get it =/ ... also yay for odin :D

Doggejern 1 year ago
Tonberry is awesome :-)
But I thought that they had a draw on them so that you could kill them without using up your demi spells...
Oh well, there are lots of things I confuse with in this game.
GPadd 1 year ago
HC, it says in my Strategy Guide here back in the day that you must defeat 18-22 Tonberries. (Page 171, BradyGames) You also forgot to mention he has Full-Life to Draw. I am waiting for you to get to the big underwater guy... I am having trouble...
MusicMan0985 1 year ago
You should mention that you can steal a Luck-J scroll from Odin here. It's one of the two or three you can find in the game. I think!
Ankhrae 1 year ago
@Ankhrae He did say so. "You can also mug a luck junction scroll from him I think.. but uhh.. nothing I really care about. I hate the luck stat anyway". At around 3:40
spriddlez 1 year ago
@spriddlez Ah damn! He did! My bad. I was probably writing my comment as he was saying that! I guess I just expected him to say it during the battle. It seemed like he'd forgotten.
Ankhrae 1 year ago
@Ankhrae I do that all the time =P I've just decided to comment much less as a result.

your right, in Norse mythologies Sleipnir has eight legs, but square have been giving him six legs since final fantasy III. Also there actually is one dungeon that limits your abilities in this game, well sort off, the final dungeon takes away all of your abilities, GF, Magic, Draw, e.t.c. and you have to beat different bosses to get them back.
CocaColaGuy123 1 year ago
Tonberry Kong's summon attack is probably my favorite in the whole game. not because of damage, just because of the animation. XD
iheartmovees 1 year ago
Haha Graphical glitches ftw! I didn't know you could get a Tonberry GF! Thanks for showing that HC.
The Tonberry encounters remind me of FFXI with the "Tonberry Hate". I think if you killed alot of Tonberries in a certain area in FFXI, I think the Tonberries are likely to aggro more, I think. It's been awhile so I don't know, if anyone knows about that please clearify.
BlazingFireSoul 1 year ago
@BlazingFireSoul It's for Everyone's Grudge. They'll aggro you regardless, depending on your level of course. But more tonberries killed means Everyone's Grudge does more damage to you. You can reset the amount by paying a specific NPC some gil, just so you don't get 1 shotted by them eventually.

The Pocketstation game plays itself, so I have a bunch of items and I'm almost at level 50.

ah i love these vids...last night i finished ff8 again having done everything and getting the most out of it (this lp taught me how to actually be good at triple triads) ...now its over i feel rather upset to be honest.

The tonberry was relieving a lot of junk from his trunk.

How appropriate, Squall's gunblade is broken, as though zantentsuken passed through it.
lecmg 1 year ago 2
I usually have Squalls best limit by now, and keep him in the yellow. One of those limits with 100 Triples on Strength = dead toneberry in about 30 seconds
tboctavan 1 year ago
Come on HC, you should know since you are still a lower level that the bosses/enemies don't have as much HP. The higher l of a level you get, the more HP they have. But again, I am sure you know that.
isohockey92 1 year ago
Yep, Sleipnir definitely had eight legs, but since you know what Square are like with giving anything that should've had eight legs eight legs these days :P
ReloadPsi 1 year ago
yay tonberry XD i never used demi on him before xD i always try to get lionheart in disc 1 xD soooo i just use limit breaks with squall lol who will always die from the crappy everyones grudge lol

JoJoBirth1993 1 year ago
@JoJoBirth1993 He did say he won't be going to level 100 early in the game.
lecmg 1 year ago
That's a funny glitch HCBailly. Oh no! His junk is glitching out my emulator! XD
Blackdrake1 1 year ago
Oh my, I never had the Tornberry GF when I played it! that's nice
maxyliano 1 year ago
9:30 Why is his crown floating on his head? That's a very good question...I say it's because it helps him become immune to Gravity attacks...why, because it must have some kind of special gravity device in it that not only allows it to float on his head but also blocks gravity attacks since it absorbs gravity...that's my guess...
9:48 The point of that attack is to SCREW UP YOUR EMULATOR...
jscheive 1 year ago
Actually, I killed twenty Tonberries with Squall's Limit Break. I only used it once.

So Odin is a load bearing GF?
CSHawkins100 1 year ago
what magic can you draw from the tonberry king?
brainjuice654 1 year ago
@brainjuice654 If you're below level 30, you can draw Death, Life, and Cure (up to lvl 19) or Cura (lvl 20-29). If you're at level 30 or higher, you can draw Death, Curaga and Full-Life.

mizsigzLLR 1 year ago 2
doesn't the last dungeon put limits on your charactors?
brainjuice654 1 year ago
You can also draw Full-Life from him witch is good for Vit Stat.
doamaster08 1 year ago
@doamaster08
Only if his part is high enough lvl. Full-Life is better for HP or for Elem-def. Now that he has Tonberry, he can level up Gaylas on the Trabia continent and draw Meltdowns, which is better for Vit.

HCBailly why don't you have Darkside I find it to be extremely useful.

Odin is badass here, I was just wondering however will you see Odin Zantetsuken you if you run out of time before the battle in his chamber?
MindstormXL 1 year ago
Hc, most monsters try and kill you in Final Fantasy.
joshuapsgibbons 1 year ago
Which emulator and bios do you use? it looks great, while mine screws up with most of the larger games.
trollshamanpwnage 1 year ago
Does the game ever tell you how to find Tonberry King? I can't imagine anyone fighting that many tonberries without knowing that.
Ocson 1 year ago
@Ocson I don't think the game tells you, you just have to be bored and want to test your strength on killing 20 Tonberrys
zeke1337 1 year ago
@Ocson
Do final fantasy games ever tell you stuff like this? Seriously, this is like one example out of hundreds. I'm not a fan either, but the designers have been pulling stunts like this for two decades.
JohnRayJr 1 year ago
I usually keep Squall in critical for Tonberry's I find its a lot quicker personally than using Demi
