do your search online before you get to new york. plan out what apts you're going to see in order of location, so you don't end up running all over the city and missing appointments. keep in mind most places require first, security and sometimes an additional broker's fee which is usually an additional month's rent. so plan out your funds before hand. and it's safe to have at least 5k saved before you move. ny is really expensive and finding a job is tough right now. best of luck!

But originally from Queens. I'm More nervous about if this is the right move for me and my 2 year old. And of course getting a smaller apartment, less amenities and paying waaaaaaaay more money for rent LOL!!!!

no problem! it's a huge move and as you already know, new york is tough. but i think if you plan accordingly, the first few months won't be as tough. while ny is expensive, right now is a great time to find an apartment. there are tons of great places available and most buildings are coming down on their rent because of the tough economy. you just have to be diligent in your search and haggle as much as possible! keep me posted on your ny travels!
