So many of the things you do I too did. I thought I was the only one who used a finger & used paper towels which ended up as a dirty mess in my hand.
It's been a while since I last painted in oils as I'm doing an animation course, but you make me want to do more.
Thank you so much for posting this videos of your painting of John. The comments as you explain and the good, slow and steady camera work, with the occasional close up for details - make for the best painting videos I've seen yet.
Hi Tina, I just wanted to thank you for taking so much time to share your technique. You paint well enough in your own right to not have someone say you don't paint as well as the masters. Why would we all want to paint exactly the same? All artists should be trying to imbue their artwork with something of themselves & as such you have done so.There is nothing wrong painting from a photo & many artists paint copies of other paintings. Renoir did.John's personality shows thru.Thks for sharing.Dee
helihobbit, Thanks for watching. Paint is very thin in glazing. It's not done much these days. You may be more interested in Alla Prima or Impasto work. Any hints on lighting video for better color? thanks, tina
Well, I've just gone through the lot of the videos. I am amazed how similar I make use of brushes, paper towel and liquin(!). I am just about to finish painting a bust (more or less the same rules apply as for canvas, just a little less freedom due to the sculpt). I will go back and tweak a few things, especially the eyes.
VEry, very helpful, Tina. More seeking people should stumble across your tutorial.
But painting, and portrait painting especially, is not merely making a copy of a photograph. There is no life in this painting. An exact copy is not the same thing as bringing the painting to life.
If this concept is not understood, a painter one will never be.
But you do not achieve the depth in the paint surface or the life you see in the works of Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez or Titian. You've merely slavishly copied a poor photo with a tiny brush. You'd never see the fine, razor sharp edges you have all over in the works of the masters.
hermanzoon, Thanks for commenting. I'm happy my work is even mentioned in the same breath as the masters. Ofcourse I'm still learning. Who knows? Maybe one day. smiles. Thanks again, tina
Tina, I just watched the whole tutorial and I took some notes and it's too late right now but I honestly cannot wait til tomorrow comes just so I can start a painting using your tips and techniques! I just got into painting in general, let alone oil painting, a week ago or so. I've been messing around with oil paint trying to paint portraits and it has become my new favorite media. I'm improving but this will definitely help me a lot. Thank you VERY much! -Julie
I am over 75. I started painting around 5 months ago. I created shortcuts for the 29 Tutorials on my desktop and watched them. I followed your brush on the screen with my brush. Now I have painted a portrait of lady Daiana in oil on board 50 X 65 cm to enter a Dian memorial exhibition. I wish Icould email it to you for your comments on how I can improve it.
Solomon, how exciting for you! In my website wich is in the "more" link in the box at the top right of this page, there is a way to email. I'd love to see your work! tina
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been glued to the computer for your whole series and have been enthralled. You have inspired me to try and emulate your light touch.
Thank you very much, excellenet work. I have watched the whole course, it is the best lesson I have had in portrait painting. I appreciate the work that goes into producing this series, but any chance of more?
Doug, Pleased to meet you! Glad you enjoyed the videos. Yes, I'd like to do more, perhaps a younger female, a child or an older person. Any ideas? tina

He looks like the mad magazine guy. Give him the broad man chin. He looks terrible with a pig nose. Nice Hair tho.

You know, in times, I learned to never bother with negative comments, they can only come from negative people.
Keep smiling and keep painting you master both! :-)
