It's more complex than that. Bill and Jay were friends for years, and Jay gave him one of his first big breaks as his opener. Near the end of his life Bill sent Jay a Christmas letter where he tells Jay not to take his jokes too seriously. He's just giving Jay shit the way you or I would your best friend. This is all documented in "Love All The People," the collection of Bill's routines, letters, etc.

But yeah, believe it or not, I just returned the Hicks book to the library last night, and it's got a complete copy of Bill's Christmas letter to Jay. Jay had already taken over The Tonight Show, and you could argue Bill was trying to play nice in order to wrangle a spot on the show, but I get the impression Bill was more forgiving than his on-stage persona suggests. Heck, he even sent a holiday letter to Dave after Bill was censored.

Honest question, and I know I'll sound like an arrogant asshole saying it, but so be it. People used to refer to me as being supposedly hilarious. And whether or not this was a legitimate attribution, I could make people laugh hard. Then I got diagnosed with a depression and im an unfunny stupid mind-numbed Prozac robot. If I took pot, would it make me have at least a remote sense of humor, or just make everything seem funny.
