Well, there is no actual "main character" in SoG. This series focuses on several different characters, though some characters (like Hydros and Verex) are noticably more promonent than others.

I'm not sure if the Melding universe Makuta can shape-shift.

If they can, then that's the reason. If they can't, then it's because Zomahk rebuilt himself to look the way he does.
