As with most things we eventually accomplish, we just dove in the deep end. We are woodworkers and had a good shop to work in so that helped a lot. It is just a hobby, though we have talked many times about the possibility of building these for a living. Even we look at others work and see the imagination and quality of work that seems to set the bar a bit too high. If I had to do this for a job, it wouldn't be the worst thing to earn a living with.
I don't remember and they're now in storage. Seriously, I just slapped them together one morning using scrap 2X4s. I'm 6' tall and they are perfect for all aspects of working both the hull and the finished boat. Tracy is 5' 4" and they sit a bit high for her working the deck of the finished boats. Just look at where we stand in relation to them and build yours accordingly. At 2:50 Tracy is standing on a stool, 4:30 may give you some perspective.
@Crashmo1 ha ha ha im just messin with ya man. was funny after the last video in this series i found out i live in the same town as you guys. well actually i am unfortunately in gresham right now either way cool vids and a beautiful finished product
Very nice work. I am getting anxious to get started on mine. As if building one for the first time wasn't challenging enough, I decided to design mine from scratch, so I go without plans. Tricky things to design these kayaks. I finally got it done and am getting ready to start building come this weekend. I only hope it works out the way my mind thinks it will.... So that there is little tweaking of the design to be had. We shall see.
Again, very, very nice work and thank you for posting.
fantastic work! i cant wait to start a project like you guys undertook. I must admit i dont know id want to hang your kayak on the wall or paddle them?!
Thanks for watching all of our slide shows. We're glad someone other than us can enjoy them and the time we spent making the boats.
For those that are subscribing to our videos--These are our last ones concerning these boats. There is much paddling to do until we start on the next one(s).
We're already designing, but it may be year(s) before we post more. Just a heads up for you.
There 2 beaut Kayaks yous have made, the carbon sets it off aswell, glad to see the effort yous put into these paid off very well in the end. congrats
Bill & Tracy, nice work on the paddle, I have Nick's book as well but I have not attempted a paddle as of yet. Everybody that sees my kayak asks me if I am making a paddle too! Maybe after I finsh my next kayak I;ll try it.
Hi Bill & Tracy nice job on the video and of course the kayaks. I finished a Cape Ann Sport last fall and I have been enjoying it this summer. I also have a video here "How I Bulit a Wood Strip Kayak". I plan on building a second one this fall/winter. I wish I could get my wife involved in the buidling process like you Tracy! Beautiful kayaks and I am sure you two are enjoying them.
its just... WOW! Have a lot of fun with them ;)

Someone keeps putting a bunch of dam holes in your kayak. Really beautiful work.

@MrLeonard55
I noticed that when they were always sinking. No worries, I taped them all over with duct tape. ;-)

@lucasmorter
She did. On her boat. She wouldn't let me touch it, She said she didn't want to hear other people say, "Oh, did you make that for your wife?"

@Farsflisespikkeri I'm sorry I haven't replied, this post somehow got flagged as spam(not by me) and I didn't receive an email about it.
I'll guess at the time: about 6 months total input of ALL of our spare time. I would think that is about 4-500 hours for each boat.
Since we spent much time not working on them it actually took 2 1/2 years.
Think of it as the journey, not the destination.
