This is Kai Airport, right? Well, why do they turn to the runway just before touch-down? They should just fly straight in.

Why is it that Kai Tak has such a crazy approach? Just the runway design or is there another reason?

@boeing521 Geography mostly. The airport is very old, and slower prop driven aircraft have no real issue with the checkerboard approach. You can't go the other way because of the mountains. If you had to go around or touch-n-go, you couldn't get enough airspeed to clear it all.

@Eihort Thats not correct, there was a proceedure for both Runway 13 and 31, so missed approaches and go-around's were done from both directions. Both directions were used.
