@Jonth93 tony jaa does muay boran demonstrations. these advanced muay thai moves are rarely used today due to the adoption of western boxing stance by muay thai fighters. these super moves are hard to execute. you usualy see these moves in demonstrations before a thai boxing event.
well all that matters is that SEA boxing is a strong and powerful art form! god damn my parents dont want me to learn it because its "kruah tnak" (meaning dangerous in khmer). and yes its true however im not only interested in the fighting, i also love the art behind it; the music, the dancing and the spirituality. im not surprised my parents arent interesting in fighting because of... the past, but i really want them to see the art involved in this, not the fighting in itself.
@Chriskreissaege True Im Lao and history has alot of changes to say this region made it or this was theirs but bout the Thai having the best fighters thats Debatable lol cause we need to Do this in the King's Tournament and have Each of the best South East Regions of Asia Round up the best fighters put them against one another and the Best serves as the Representative in the Tournament
im not sure if this is true but i was told by my grandma that the music played during the wai kru/kun kru is similar if not identical to the music played during funerals. i am cambodian so im not sure if the pre-rituals are the same with as the thai one or not although i was also told muay thai, kun khmer are virtually the same. can someone comment on this?
In modern 21st century warfare a soldier will rarely find his/herself in a situation where they need to use hand to hand combat. Its all done from a distance, shoot outs, drones, scouting buldings for IED`s. Even if they do do get into hand combat, with all the gear/armour a soldier is wearing makes them slow and heavy. However i would not say no if some offered to teach me. Good for thai TV sport, and times past.
@tku28: I'm not saying for battlezone Marines or Soldiers defending forts, I'm talking about high-risk under cover ops that various agencies and security forces often engage in. CIA and whatnot.
@imthesamurai Like you. If you do Muay thai, you should be ashamed.
It's not about being able to defeat everyone, or being the stronger than someone else, it's about fighting to become stronger, of mind and body, for yourself. Phu roem rian. ;)
@Gigameth89 I started Maui Thai and Chinese Martial Arts because I had an interst in it, not to pick a fight with the biggest guy around..... that doesn't make me a bad person right >.<??
Muay thai not only works, but is very effective for the streets. That's why Military forces around the world incorporate Muay Thai for hand to hand combat for soldiers' training.
I am not agree that Tony Jaa is not an example of muay thai. In the Tony Jaa ´s bibliography he really study many tipes of martial arts including muay thai. He is also a real martial artist. In my opinion he well deserve be considered as an example of muay thai.
Iti is the guy you can see at the begining also at minutes 0:45 ,, 1:15 in this video,, he is a good stuntman, also choreographer but can't be considered as a good exemple of a thai fighter,, look for a guy called buakaw por pramuk or a foreing one called ramon dekkers
@amataratsu006 Senchai Sor Kingstar(Lumpini champ in 3 diferent weights), Ramon Dekkers(Best white kick(thai)boxer ever), Sakmongkol, Sangtiennoi, Remy Bonjanski, Buakaw por. Pramuk are some best examples.
Thailand is the most amazing place on this earth and I love it, and FULL RESPECT to Muay Thai. However given the choice I`d learn something that has some throws and locks and ground fighting techniques. This is rightly just a sport and not much use unless your a thug looking to show off outside a pub. The time it takes someone to do a spinning elbow, in half the time a person could have blocked it and sweeped your legs, then ground fighting like jujitsu.
but ground fighting in the street would leave you open to other attackers were as you could just keep on your feet an strike ur opponent then just run as soon as you have the oppertunity. muay thai aswell as most of the traditional striking arts ( karate ,Taekwondo) all have grppling locls and a small bit of ground work in them anyway. not enough to defeat a skilled jujitsu fighter but enough to be able to defend against a normal attacker
the same way that jujitsu fighters train to strike but will never have the same amount of skill in striking as the muay thai fighter. when you reach a high level in any martial art you will see that techniques cross over from art to art. muay thai has some brutal grappling moves which include gouges to the eyes and genital designed to set up a fatal blow.
QuarterPounder100 - you clearly don't have an idea about what your talking about. When you get in a fight outside a pub where anyone could decide to join in the last place you want it is on the ground. Also why a spinning elbow - this is not a classic muay thai strike, it's move of a desperate out of cardio fighter in MMA.
Anyone who practices real muay thai and needs to stop someone who is attacking them is going to kick the floating rib with a shin or bring a knee into the solar plexus.
