@logandrummer Freddie was already sick and since it was an outdoor setting the decision was probably made for him not to sing in order to save his voice and for health reasons. But his physical appearance on stage is breathtaking. He had such charisma.
Freddie and Montserrat is there better? Stonking performance! Viva Espania Viva England! (Even if we do have a crap football team!) lol! Brilliant performance! In the words of Eurovision ... 12 points!
The reason Freddie Mercury here is miming to the recorded track is, Freddie Mercury could NEVER hit these high notes in Live concerts. Max note he could sing live was A#4. That's the real reason why he didn't sing this song live. He's not a true Tenor, only in a recording studio where he can sing a C5 200 times, but get it once. And it's a wrap. Freddie Mercury is not a True Tenor. He's a baritone who can hit tenor notes in studio but not live.
Frddie is not a baritone you are mistaken, the reason that he was always dropping to lower octaves of the original songs was not because he can't sing them it's usually because as the 80s came about he lost his upper register due to incorrect technique through out his entire career, but i assure you he most certainly was a tenor, listen to live videos from the earlier part of the 70's
Your assurance means nothing at all. Who are you? Nobody. Montserrat Caballe herself said Freddie was a Baritone. In live shows, Freddie could only hit an A#4 max, and this includes 70s decade. A true tenor can sing C5, D5 night after night. Freddie was not a true tenor, though on albums, he sounded like one. Deal with the truth. He was a baritone.
Tell me what I stated that makes me a "sad" person? Is it my love for FACTS? Montserrat herself called Freddie mercury a "baritone". Freddie Mercury normally did not sing past an A#4 in live concerts. A true tenor would be able to sing Barcelona live without any problems. Freddie didn't because he couldn't. He's a baritone.
You're sad because you miss the point. Completely! What does it matter what Freddie sang - he was great. And Montserrat was greater still. Both cared more for others than themselves. Get used to it!
You're kinda right and kinda wrong at the same time. Freddie suffered from vocal nodules since the mid 70s (due to improper technique and overuse), so yes he would avoid the highest notes live--but at times he would sing the higher notes.
He didn't lose his upper register due to incorrect technique. He didn't even lose his upper register! He lost clarity due to his smoking habit and the abusive singing he did between 1984-1986. He got the clarity back by Innuendo though.
yes he did lose it because he strained...you don't lose your voice because you smoke...i know plenty of people who smoke and manage because they have proper technique...he did have horrible technique, he wasn't a technically good singer, he never had his upper register past late 1970's...not to say once in a while in the studio he would blow his voice out on something...but everyone did that back then. it doesnt make him any less amazing...he just had improper technique.
If you are referring to his "upper register" as his high notes live, then he still had that intact in the early 80s. He started getting raspy due to the smoking (that didn't change his range), then he would just yell and scream (started on The Works Tour-WORSE on the Magic Tour) all the high notes. It was the abusive singing during the mid 80s that messed his live range up. Of course that started getting better in the late 80s, then by Innuendo, his voice was 100%!
I agree that Freddie's a baritone who sounds like a tenor, but honestly in all due respect, I don't think he's miming because he couldn't hit the notes. If he did sing it live, yes he would most likely lower the C5 to probably the G4, but I heard throughout videos of this era that he mimed this song because he had throat trouble or it had something to do with his AIDS.
Freddie at this time of his life began to suffer from the effects of AIDS, so I think what you say has a lot of merit. The song Barcelona is not that high. Its very similar to WATC in that the high note C5 is very brief and used sparsely, whereas the A#4 note is a frequent secondary high note. We know that he could hit an A#4 without a problem. So yes, I think you're correct, and I'm wrong to say he could not sing this live if he was healthy. Its too bad we couldn't hear him sing this live. :)
I would love to hear Freddie sing this live. Also, depending on the era, it'll determine his ability to replicate the C5. A Freddie from the early 80s (The Game/Hot Space), would NAIL the song most likely but would have a slightly higher timbre. While a "Magic Era" Freddie would have the deeper huskier power, but most likely avoid the high note.
I think you're right...An early 80s Freddie Mercury could sing Barcelona live, but even in his ultimate prime years 1970s, he could never sing Journey songs. There's no way he could sing an E5 at the end of Separate Ways...(b4)NOOOOOO.(ending with e5). Nor could Freddie in his prime sing "Stone in Love" which has "hard" C5s. An easy C5 is like WATC/Barcelona, where it briefly hits the C5 in short bursts. A sustained and long C5 was and is out of Freddie's range.
"Stone in Love" is a very hard song to sing. I think if a singer can sing this in it's original key, he's a bonafide Tenor. The B4s and C5s are not short bursts but long, controlled, sustained notes. Very hard. So you see, not all C5s are the same. Just as not all D5s are the same. Freddie "singing" a D5 on One Vision in Wembley is not the same as Steve Perry hitting long and controlled D5s.
I get what you are saying: There's a difference between "hitting" the note, and "sustaining" the note. I'm a high baritone and can "hit" a C5 (like in bohemian rhapsody), but there's NO WAY IN HELL I can sustain that same note on a journey song. That's the difference between Freddie's "tenor/baritone" voice live, and Steve/Arnel's voices. Freddie maybe able to sing up to a B4-D5 live, but since he's a baritone, he can't "sustain" that note like what a tenor does.
Yes, you got it 100%. Freddie could sing a long sustained G#4, and even an A#4. Not just sing it, but shape it like hitting a top spin or slice in tennis. In order to "shape" a note, you need to have reserve power, and control over that note. However, notes like C5 and D5 are difficult for Freddie to control. He can hit them bluntly yes, but not sing them with control, vibrato. And that is what separates baritones who can hit C5s, and true tenors who can awesomely shape C5s ie Bruno on FallenP.
I think that's originally why I mislabeled Freddie as a tenor because he could "hit" the notes, but not "sustain" them, or "shape" them. I also think that's why some of my friends got my voice type mixed up: They thought I was a tenor because I could sing "high", but I told them that I wasn't because I couldn't sustain/shape them. What's your range anyway? I remember you saying that you were a lyric tenor.
I can sing "Stone in Love". My max is a C#5, but I don't think I'm a super tenor like Steve Perry/Arnel Pineda. At least not yet. Those guys have reserve range, like an extra two whole notes. But one thing I like about singing is that it's very much like martial arts. The more you "train", the better you get, like driving a motorcycle. And it's nice to see one's progress. I can basically sing Journey songs without any problem, but the higher notes like E5 have to be "yelled" out.
My full voice range is F2-C#5. I'm a high baritone (probably a light/lyric with extended range, not 100% sure). I usually keep my voice around Ab2-Bb4. After Bb4, I start "yelling out the notes." I can sing "Tie Your Mother Down" on the dot. I always go for the C5 on Bohemian Rhapsody and hit it most of the time. I'm trying to train myself to sing tenor.
Thanks for the compliments! Ironically, I "trained" myself to sing buy listening to another "untrained" vocalist. Freddie Mercury! LMFAO!! Months ago, I could barely hit an A4, now it's easy! Now if I can hit a C5 without shouting...lol
Journey songs are built for high-end tenors (Arnel) and Countertenors (Steve). I don't think a baritone/tenor mix singer like Freddie could sing it in it's original key--unless he drops all the high notes. lol
Then you along with everyone else in that concert who thought Freddie was singing live were fooled badly. Anyone can hear that the vocals are the same as on the Album. And you must be blind too because you failed to notice..no microphones! That is a dead giveaway, don't you think?
LOL..my response about the microphones or lack thereof was directed to someone else who boasted "he was there and heard him sing live"....amazing feat don't you think to sing without a microphone...Freddie and Montserrat must have bigger voices than I thought!
Oops. There was someone who posted that he was there that day, and heard it live. But it must be on another barcelona video. My bad. Sorry for the confusion.
Please show me where in the video one can see these "stage" microphones. You have an entire video clip that is 5:46 minutes long of "LIVE" footage. You can even search all the other "live" performances in this concert. Show me ONE video frame that shows a microphone for Freddie Mercury or Montserrat Caballe.
According to the biography that I saw on the Bio channel on Queen it said that he went & sang this show live then after this performance when he came home is when thing started going downhill with his sickness. This was a great show by him.

No, it's playback. Freddie had troubles with his voice then, and didn't want to sing this live.
