  • to Professor of Music, Margo Denise Wilson with all my love

  • Great performance. This has been one of my favorite pieces ever since hearing Rostropovitch perform it live about 25 years ago.

  • Rose's crescendo from 3:59-4:09.

  • Merci à toi pour cette vidéo digne d'un musée !

  • The most concordant collaboration of the A Major Beethoven Cello Sonata I'ever heard. The pianist and the cellist perfectly complement each other so that each one sounds even better.Mr.Rose's tone is also very clear, rich and deep so that each note comes out with such color. In this rendition - you hear BOTH the piano and the cello, rather than the usual where one instrument tends to overshadow the other.Rather than being solely a cello sonata,it's now become a sonata for cello AND piano.

  • Yes that's Glenn's attachment towards music. A very profound musician I must admit!! :)

  • I've never seen a pianist play so...erm...convictingly.

  • me gusta que el piano no se pierda en un segundo plano

  • グールドはチェロソナタを、チェロ付きピアノソナタに、この曲を昇華させている。

  • What cello sonata is this?

  • @daonap Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69. Composed in 1808.

  • @HanEllipsis thx for the info!

  • Insane Combo! Majestic Rose and Robotic Philosopher Gould.. Thanks youtube!

  • hermosa sonata

  • I didn't know Gould and Rose played this! I'm surprised!

  • This piece is a fine example of Beethoven's Middle Style.

  • I'm with the need for the 'love' button... sublime of sublime.

  • This is such a wonderful upload, thanks a bunch Sergei!

  • Gould and Rose make a fine team. This is just as fun to see as it is to hear. Their love for the music somehow really shows. And what an exciting piece of music by Beethoven. So many exciting key changes and such a lyrical melody. I was misled by the relative obscurity of the cello sonata form — this is serious and beautiful work by L.v.B.

  • orgasm on legs!

  • Glenn Gould is absolutely awesome. Leonard Rose is my new cello idol now.

  • rose speed little high but sound deep.great. gould outstanding.

  • Words cant describe how beautiful this is.......

  • @ykmgt no problem!

  • Three persons are going to hell!

  • teachers of the visual scene with the mouth :D haha love the vid

  • beautiful sound and image. thank you for uploading!!

  • i really love this sonata

and leonard rose playing seems effortless

he has a sound so warm and unique

  • Stop speaking about performance! Just praise the wonderful music, the divine author!

  • @2251813 The production of music requires a collaboration between author and performer.

  • @KABRIS1 The question is, where do we put the accent? 99% of the comments are about performers!

  • @2251813 It is true that the composers are often neglected.

  • so this is the great teacher of Yo-Yo Ma!

  • the video is such an understatement to the music and chemistry that they make. what i mean is, black and white television and coat and tie suits are not apt for the colors that they paint in my head. I don't think of them playing instruments anymore. It's just MUSIC.

  • Damn, we have a like button, but no love button.

  • Comment removed

  • @frixyvlog Yes, we have a "love" button it´s name is favourites ;)

  • Gould reminds me of Ray Charles. He seems to bury himself in the performance. Like dance or lovemaking.

  • Great performance---I'd rather hear it than watch it tho.The cellist is not the offender--Gould is---He plays well, but his mannerisms while he plays are a bit annoying and excessive. He bugs me,sorry.

  • masterful,

Leonard Rose was a great and unique cellist

  • Musica muito bonita!Mas fala serio o pianista parece que esta tendo um orgasmo ,pra que tanta careta?Toca normal sente a musica mas nem tanto....olhe o cellista ele sim esta sentindo a musica...

  • Why are you all so focused on politics, and not on the subtleties of Rose's bow hand? Set aside your differences, and let the music do what it is supposed to.

  • I didn't know Richard Nixon played the cello:) only jokin this is brilliant.

  • Beautifully performed.

    P.S.-To keenboy1310

I can only add that if it is a battle of the wits that you desire-then you should not have come half prepared!!!!

P.P.S.-Do you even understand the above ?

  • Gould was one of the finest pianists ever!!!

  • this song is stuck in my head

  • Beethoven must have adored bach, he quotes him in numerable ocassions, sounds lovely.

  • This is GIANT, I come back over and over again. It's GIANT. Rose and Gould recorded Bach for Columbia but sadly nothing else. This duo of theirs is one for the Ages.

  • greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!!

  • Brilliant performance

  • Rad dude!!!

  • Even though they look very different when they play, Rose and Gould actually match each other beautifully in sound, articulation, and phrasing. Even though Rose seems much more subdued, one can tell that he really connects to this piece. Gould is just as fantastic as ever. I heard an assertion that he is only good for Bach. hah. This recording proves that to be a myth. Fantastic! What a gem!

  • @JuanSalvCarrasco I agree totally! Gould really proves himself as a most talented, sensitive accompanist in this performance. Couldn't have said it better myself!

  • @JuanSalvCarrasco You should hear Gould's recordings of the Beethoven sonatas 17 and 18. Of course you have to look past his trademark humming along at various places and the chair's offering of sound, but the music itself is excellent. If Gould couldn't play something exceptionally, he didn't include it in his repertoire.

This is from a televised performance in 1960 (I believe on Candian TV).

  • Bravo!!!!!!

  • A very fine performance! Bravo! TY KM.

  • love his bowing at 4:25. doesn't seem like much but he had such a good technique

  • Rose played in a Trio with Stern and Istomen for many years. I always found his playing one dimensional, lacking color and spontaneity.

Just another opinion to perhaps get us away from the feud at this site.

  • Cheese

  • when was this recorded?

  • 1960, I've read by one commenter; another one said Gould was 27 when this was taped. Gould looks to me to be in his late 20s, so whether it was in late 50s or 60, it gives us a general time period, I think..

  • So thats what Rose looks like. Awesome!!! Cool to see the teacher of my teacher on youtube!!

    BRAVO

  • Wow.

  • Beautiful!!

& Both of them have no scores!

    Amazing....

  • I really wish rose was abit more exciting!

Gould plays it with alot of enthusiasm as alwyas but i think rose just lets him down in terms of performance obviously his sound is great but he just needs more of an enthusiastic presense,

  • I'd disagree. What one observes in this particular video is an incredibly balanced interpretation of this Beethoven sonata (which, really, is not a particularly "exciting" sonata. And so what? It's beautiful).

  • I cant belive you just said this is not exciting.

    You idiot.

  • Well, excuse me. I guess if I don't particularly agree with your assertion that this grand sonata could be characterized generally as "exciting," then I must be an idiot, right? A logical assumption!

A thousand pardons for offending you, Batman. I simply think the sonata is, on the whole, of a more expansive, almost rhapsodic nature (especially the first movement). There's so much singing, so many long lines...and I just think this particular collaboration brings them to attention masterfully.

  • You think by usung these large words you somehow place yourself higher then me in terms of knowledge of music?

The whole comment in the first place was about the performance,

Watch Glenn gould and then watch rose who seems the more entertaining to watch?

You my friend are very cocky,

    are you a cellist?

  • Winner of this bout: OzzyKingofKings!

Looks like the caped crusader has failed to protect Gotham city from verbal warfare, and an accurate depiction of this particularly wonderful piece of music. Sorry Batman, but maybe the next time the bat phone rings and Ozzy is terrorizing the city, you should call in sick and let Robin handle the situation.

  • Oh my word,

see what we have here is a corny wannabe american,(Typical) i say wannabe because your canadian, and that means your just not quite good enough at life to be an american. But, bless your soul you do try, its the taking part that counts isnt it? Loser?

Put that in your pipe and smoke it,

one more thing, My user name is Batman, because my real last name is Bateman? nothing to do with Batman the legendary comic figure which all you "nerd's" "jack off" over :)

    good day old chap.

  • Holy irrelevance Batman! You lose one argument, and you attempt to insult the country of the first person who laughs at your misfortune? Being "good at life" has nothing to do with ones country, and if it did, america sure as fuck would be nowhere near the top of the list :P

And nice try, but even an idiot like you should be able to spell their last name properly. You name yourself after a comic book character, and have the audacity to call ME the nerd? bahaha. No wonder that Ozzy guy owned you

  • shh canadian No one wants to listen to you, America is better, face it :).

  • Smart move, changing the subject of your attacks away from me. Especially given the circumstances here. You're way out of your league. We both know that my country of residence has no impact on my dominance over you. This is the third irrelevant "point" I've seen you attempt to make, on this one video alone. Diverging from the point indicates acknowledgnent of having no valid input on the topic at hand. Well done, yet another person out there is aware of your uselessness. Keep spreading that.

  • @paulostroff99 It's actually you're... Seeing as it's a contraction of the words you and are... Just saying seeing as you're being so tediously bullyish and quite frankly racist. Oh well... Who am I to argue eh?

  • keenboy1310-You are ample proof of one not knowing the difference between a racist and a bassist. Yes,who are you to argue-huh? You pseudo intellectuals masquerading as intellectuals what with your feeble attempts at mockery-are truly pathetic. One can not make a fool of others, but only of oneself. Of this I commend you for having totally succeeded.

  • keenboy1310-Just in hopes of never hearing from you again-I should add that Central as well as South Americans can be added to North Americans,as all are indeed Americans of one type or another.

  • Do you get kicks from being a dick? Or is it just the way you are? If so good luck in finding friends, cause I'd love to hear from somebody who can bear your arrogance and opressive attitude for more than a few minutes.

  • Batman6564-First of all I'm certainly not your mate. Secondly why would you be tuned to a great and proud Canadian-Glenn Gould. If Canada Is not a real country,Is Mr. Gould then-not a real person?

  • Batman6564-Better at what-making (albeit)losing wars based on lies. Vietnam,Iraq,Afghanistan etc. Originality-can't even name your country properly.United States of Mexico,Brazil or other such names are as valid as of America. Better at hockey,Olympic gold medals. What then? Most of you don't even know where Canada is,even it being larger an area than your land.

  • Batman6564-Besides having the name of battyman or whatever-you aptly fit the description of an ugly American.Arrogant and unloved the world over, as a result. Unjust wars is no recommendation. Nor are lies on non existent weapons of mass destruction. If you consider Americans better at life than Canadians-wake up and smell the coffee!!! You dunces are not even Americans,as we all born here in the Americas are American-North American!!

  • @paulostroff99 mate, you just made an absolute prick out of yourself, next time you decide to run your mouth at a very old argument, try checking your facts, Im English you retard.

  • In response to your question, no. However, I've reached a certain level of proficiency on the piano and the violin, and in addition to harboring great love for the cello (my favorite instrument) I am also intrigued by the lives and legacies of the great instrumentalists of the past.

And look, I didn't appreciate being called an idiot for expressing my opinion, so I had to defend my thoughts and explain myself. Is that really so cocky of me?

  • Also, I don't think I implied any difference between our musical abilities (if I did, I did not mean to). Ours is merely a difference of opinion.

I understand that your comment was about the performance. Of course, Rose is more subdued than his eccentric partner.

However, I'm concerned with not whether or not someone looks exciting, but whether or not an artist has something convincing to say.

In terms of how engaging the artist's musical personality is, I think Rose is every bit Gould's equal.

  • Your point is well argued and makes sense. But still it is your opnion and i do not agree.

Your a clever guy, and you argue extremely well, hats off to you old chap.

im a cellist my self, good luck with your violin.

We may meet again in another battle of opinions on another youtube video. haha.

sorry for any inapropriatte comments and fare well.

  • Knew you weren't a bad sort.

Good luck to you as well, and see you next clash. Hehe.

  • OzzyKingofKings-That is a stretch if ever I heard one.Glenn Gould is among the greatest pianists of all time, while Rose is a fine cellist, but hardly a Casals,Feuermann,or Rostropovich. Listen to some of the Gould /Menuhin collaborations to hear what musical bliss is all about.

  • I agree; the Gould and Menuhin recordings are incredible.

However, I must balk at your description of Rose as a "fine cellist." It's obvious that Rose is not Casals or Feuermann (he's Leonard Rose, yes?); while I don't dispute your assertion about Gould's greatness I do think that it is just as impossible to compare Rose to any of the cellists mentioned as it is impossible to compare Gould to any other pianist.

Rose is an individual, and I've always deeply enjoyed his work. Enough for me.

  • OzzyKingofKings-I offer no IMO apology for my non attacking statemen on Leonard Rose, nor do I have any quarrel with what you said. I will repeat your words by you-I am me and you are you.I respect your opinion as should mine also be respected. I have followed Rose since he was in a trio with Stern and Istoman, and find him to be a very fine cellist. To think him on the same level as Casals,Feuermann,or Rostropovich is surely a very large stretch.

  • Fair enough. If I gave off any impression of disrespect of your opinion, I apologize; I did not mean to.

  • My new favorite!

  • glenn gould's interpretation fits in this piece

  • which sonata is this?

  • wow.... my respect... so far never heard Rose and Gould together. and this is my fav Beethoven cello sonata!!!

  • 6:30 rocks! Every time I listen to Gould's playing this passage, I am astonished!

  • Very rare to see glenn gould playing chamber music.

    this is an awesome recording

  • @anisometropie Not so. He has played in a large number of combinations.

  • @anisometropie agree on the awesome part though

  • It's so great because here we have two dedicated, gifted and talented gentlemen of the art.

  • this is one of my absolute favorite cello sonatas of all time! and it's is played soo well!!!

  • glenn gould is so weird. he sure makes good music though.

  • Lo amo.

  • Nice to have on the background... Curious about part 2. Gould sounds quite adapted to Rose! Thanks!

  • Absolutely outstanding....nothing like it! Interpretation at its very best, new sounds, new voices, new feeling........WOW!

  • I like Glen Gould's Bach.

  • when did he ever say he was better than beethoven...

  • 6:00!

  • The shift?

  • Rose is so relaxed, and Gould always carried that squeaky chair around with him. haha, thanks for the post.

  • you don't think it works? I've loved this ever since i first heard it.

  • It's interesting watching them together...so different. But obviously the blending of parts is exquisite. I wonder what it was like rehearsing with Gould!

  • leanard's bow arm is perfect! look at his hand shape and his right wrist - he is amazing!

  • FYI

Beethoven "Cello Sonata" should really be called "Cello and Piano Sonata", for there is a considerable role for the piano; it is not just simply accompanying.

  • its hard to find a pianist good enough to sit down and read this stuff. (piano trios/cello sonatas) Im convinced the pianist needs to be way better than the rest of em... its the burden of the pianist

  • what do you mean? there are lots, right?

  • there aren't any cellists good enough to sit and read this stuff well (without ever having played it) either. Beethoven always requires practice.

  • very true. I guess I just expect them to be able to because they play piano... It is a challenge on cello

  • FYI: Beethoven actually called it "Sonata for Piano and Cello". This is probably the most technically demanding of the 5 sonatas for the cello but they are all extremely difficult for both instruments.

  • thank you for so beutiful video. I've never heard such cello sound, deep and heart-strings.. I adore Rose's sound.

  • I fell in love with Glenn gould at age 15 with this recording. What ecastasy!

  • Doesn't he just have the most amazing touch? The first recording I hearrd was the Goldberg variations and not even his grunting could detract!

  • he's not grunting in the goldbergs he's singing!!

  • Jopolis- yes, I know. It was termed solely for effect! But he is a master!!!

  • I'm with you...I can't stop myself either!

  • I think that I am obsessed with this piece. All three movements are amazing.

  • its time for an intervention...lol

  • Please don't save me from myself :)

  • damn me too, all three of them are pure gold, I remember the first one I heard was the 2nd mov. but the first is brilliant, powerful & beautiful as well!

  • Definitely the best and the only inclassifiable interpretation of this famous Beethoven's piece. Here Gould is struggling with his ambivalent feeling for and against the romantic composerm and wins. What a contrast between performing (bad) manners and an inhuman evenness of scales! A certain holiness can be experienced.

  • Desde sempre um dos meus violoncelistas preferidos.CLASSE!!!

  • In the begin when the piano start to play it look like the song of "Queen" Love of my Life

  • Beautyfull!!

  • This is the first movement of Beethoven's Cello Sonata number 3 in A Major, opus 69, composed in 1808. This was filmed in 1960. Rose and Gould repeated their performance of this sonata at the Stratford Music Festival of 1962, which was carried on CBC (Canada) radio.

  • Phenomenal performance as if it's being newly created as you hear it.Rose's sound is always so rich and varied. Thanks for making it available!

  • thanks for this historical recording

  • It obviously cant get much better than this...

One of my favorite pieces, and i'm a pianist =D

  • Glen Ghould stayed at my Aunties house :D

  • <3 Thank you for posting this!

  • Oh... wow..

  • thanks a lot for posting this...

  • Incredibly sensitive. Perfect control of tempo, dynamics and an original conception. I mean, that's Glenn playing... :)

  • what else to say ? :)
