The most concordant collaboration of the A Major Beethoven Cello Sonata I'ever heard. The pianist and the cellist perfectly complement each other so that each one sounds even better.Mr.Rose's tone is also very clear, rich and deep so that each note comes out with such color. In this rendition - you hear BOTH the piano and the cello, rather than the usual where one instrument tends to overshadow the other.Rather than being solely a cello sonata,it's now become a sonata for cello AND piano.
Gould and Rose make a fine team. This is just as fun to see as it is to hear. Their love for the music somehow really shows. And what an exciting piece of music by Beethoven. So many exciting key changes and such a lyrical melody. I was misled by the relative obscurity of the cello sonata form — this is serious and beautiful work by L.v.B.
the video is such an understatement to the music and chemistry that they make. what i mean is, black and white television and coat and tie suits are not apt for the colors that they paint in my head. I don't think of them playing instruments anymore. It's just MUSIC.
Great performance---I'd rather hear it than watch it tho.The cellist is not the offender--Gould is---He plays well, but his mannerisms while he plays are a bit annoying and excessive. He bugs me,sorry.
Musica muito bonita!Mas fala serio o pianista parece que esta tendo um orgasmo ,pra que tanta careta?Toca normal sente a musica mas nem tanto....olhe o cellista ele sim esta sentindo a musica...
Why are you all so focused on politics, and not on the subtleties of Rose's bow hand? Set aside your differences, and let the music do what it is supposed to.
This is GIANT, I come back over and over again. It's GIANT. Rose and Gould recorded Bach for Columbia but sadly nothing else. This duo of theirs is one for the Ages.
Even though they look very different when they play, Rose and Gould actually match each other beautifully in sound, articulation, and phrasing. Even though Rose seems much more subdued, one can tell that he really connects to this piece. Gould is just as fantastic as ever. I heard an assertion that he is only good for Bach. hah. This recording proves that to be a myth. Fantastic! What a gem!
@JuanSalvCarrasco I agree totally! Gould really proves himself as a most talented, sensitive accompanist in this performance. Couldn't have said it better myself!
@JuanSalvCarrasco You should hear Gould's recordings of the Beethoven sonatas 17 and 18. Of course you have to look past his trademark humming along at various places and the chair's offering of sound, but the music itself is excellent. If Gould couldn't play something exceptionally, he didn't include it in his repertoire.
This is from a televised performance in 1960 (I believe on Candian TV).
1960, I've read by one commenter; another one said Gould was 27 when this was taped. Gould looks to me to be in his late 20s, so whether it was in late 50s or 60, it gives us a general time period, I think..
Gould plays it with alot of enthusiasm as alwyas but i think rose just lets him down in terms of performance obviously his sound is great but he just needs more of an enthusiastic presense,
I'd disagree. What one observes in this particular video is an incredibly balanced interpretation of this Beethoven sonata (which, really, is not a particularly "exciting" sonata. And so what? It's beautiful).
Well, excuse me. I guess if I don't particularly agree with your assertion that this grand sonata could be characterized generally as "exciting," then I must be an idiot, right? A logical assumption!
A thousand pardons for offending you, Batman. I simply think the sonata is, on the whole, of a more expansive, almost rhapsodic nature (especially the first movement). There's so much singing, so many long lines...and I just think this particular collaboration brings them to attention masterfully.
Looks like the caped crusader has failed to protect Gotham city from verbal warfare, and an accurate depiction of this particularly wonderful piece of music. Sorry Batman, but maybe the next time the bat phone rings and Ozzy is terrorizing the city, you should call in sick and let Robin handle the situation.

@paulostroff99 mate, you just made an absolute prick out of yourself, next time you decide to run your mouth at a very old argument, try checking your facts, Im English you retard.
In response to your question, no. However, I've reached a certain level of proficiency on the piano and the violin, and in addition to harboring great love for the cello (my favorite instrument) I am also intrigued by the lives and legacies of the great instrumentalists of the past.
And look, I didn't appreciate being called an idiot for expressing my opinion, so I had to defend my thoughts and explain myself. Is that really so cocky of me?
OzzyKingofKings-That is a stretch if ever I heard one.Glenn Gould is among the greatest pianists of all time, while Rose is a fine cellist, but hardly a Casals,Feuermann,or Rostropovich. Listen to some of the Gould /Menuhin collaborations to hear what musical bliss is all about.
I agree; the Gould and Menuhin recordings are incredible.
However, I must balk at your description of Rose as a "fine cellist." It's obvious that Rose is not Casals or Feuermann (he's Leonard Rose, yes?); while I don't dispute your assertion about Gould's greatness I do think that it is just as impossible to compare Rose to any of the cellists mentioned as it is impossible to compare Gould to any other pianist.
Rose is an individual, and I've always deeply enjoyed his work. Enough for me.
OzzyKingofKings-I offer no IMO apology for my non attacking statemen on Leonard Rose, nor do I have any quarrel with what you said. I will repeat your words by you-I am me and you are you.I respect your opinion as should mine also be respected. I have followed Rose since he was in a trio with Stern and Istoman, and find him to be a very fine cellist. To think him on the same level as Casals,Feuermann,or Rostropovich is surely a very large stretch.
It's interesting watching them together...so different. But obviously the blending of parts is exquisite. I wonder what it was like rehearsing with Gould!
Beethoven "Cello Sonata" should really be called "Cello and Piano Sonata", for there is a considerable role for the piano; it is not just simply accompanying.
its hard to find a pianist good enough to sit down and read this stuff. (piano trios/cello sonatas) Im convinced the pianist needs to be way better than the rest of em... its the burden of the pianist
FYI: Beethoven actually called it "Sonata for Piano and Cello". This is probably the most technically demanding of the 5 sonatas for the cello but they are all extremely difficult for both instruments.
damn me too, all three of them are pure gold, I remember the first one I heard was the 2nd mov. but the first is brilliant, powerful & beautiful as well!
Definitely the best and the only inclassifiable interpretation of this famous Beethoven's piece. Here Gould is struggling with his ambivalent feeling for and against the romantic composerm and wins. What a contrast between performing (bad) manners and an inhuman evenness of scales! A certain holiness can be experienced.
This is the first movement of Beethoven's Cello Sonata number 3 in A Major, opus 69, composed in 1808. This was filmed in 1960. Rose and Gould repeated their performance of this sonata at the Stratford Music Festival of 1962, which was carried on CBC (Canada) radio.

I understand that your comment was about the performance. Of course, Rose is more subdued than his eccentric partner.

In terms of how engaging the artist's musical personality is, I think Rose is every bit Gould's equal.

To think him on the same level as Casals,Feuermann,or Rostropovich is surely a very large stretch.

Fair enough. If I gave off any impression of disrespect of your opinion, I apologize; I did not mean to.

Rose is so relaxed, and Gould always carried that squeaky chair around with him. haha, thanks for the post.

you don't think it works? I've loved this ever since i first heard it.

It's interesting watching them together...so different. But obviously the blending of parts is exquisite. I wonder what it was like rehearsing with Gould!

leanard's bow arm is perfect! look at his hand shape and his right wrist - he is amazing!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
so apparently gould had savant syndrome...

FYI
Beethoven "Cello Sonata" should really be called "Cello and Piano Sonata", for there is a considerable role for the piano; it is not just simply accompanying.

its hard to find a pianist good enough to sit down and read this stuff. (piano trios/cello sonatas) Im convinced the pianist needs to be way better than the rest of em... its the burden of the pianist
owenhsmith 4 years ago 2
what do you mean? there are lots, right?
romymistique 3 years ago
there aren't any cellists good enough to sit and read this stuff well (without ever having played it) either. Beethoven always requires practice.
zeuge77 3 years ago
very true. I guess I just expect them to be able to because they play piano... It is a challenge on cello
owenhsmith 3 years ago
FYI: Beethoven actually called it "Sonata for Piano and Cello". This is probably the most technically demanding of the 5 sonatas for the cello but they are all extremely difficult for both instruments.

thank you for so beutiful video. I've never heard such cello sound, deep and heart-strings.. I adore Rose's sound.

I fell in love with Glenn gould at age 15 with this recording. What ecastasy!
cwogaman 4 years ago 3
Doesn't he just have the most amazing touch? The first recording I hearrd was the Goldberg variations and not even his grunting could detract!
raine0211 4 years ago 3
he's not grunting in the goldbergs he's singing!!
Jopolis07 3 years ago 4
Jopolis- yes, I know. It was termed solely for effect! But he is a master!!!

damn me too, all three of them are pure gold, I remember the first one I heard was the 2nd mov. but the first is brilliant, powerful & beautiful as well!
romymistique 3 years ago 2
