If you had any non white ancestry, no matter how white, blonde, blue eyed. etc you LOOKED, you were "black". Many Jewish familes don't take too warmly to converts, regardless of color. My mother was French/Irish Catholic and converted to marry my father, and after 45 years of marriage, there are members of my father's family who refer to her as "that shicksa" and my siblings and I have had invitations to weddings and mitzvahs convieniently "lost in the mail." It's just something that happens in some Jewish families...and has NOTHING to do with race.
