The question belies a basic lack of understanding of the principles of evolution. An animal type doesn't need to go away just because another species evolves from it. Sponges still exist because there is still an environment for them to live in. Unless something kills them all off, they will continue to exist because only select specimens need to mutate from a given species to form a new species. Not every member of the species needs to change.
Besides the basic shape (morphology) may be the same, but that does not mean sponges haven't changed genetically over time. And sponges are a pretty diverse group.
Multi-celluar, the sponge being the first???
