Hey, Jexus - I got my Korg Prophecy from UK band 'Pitchshifter' and it came with a memory card with some awesome samples. Now...I have ProGenie, so I can hook it up and save my own, but I'm wondering if I can also save everything on the memory card onto my PC as well as have it on the card, (just for backup purposes)?
well, you can always try his email on the page/synth blog he has..he answered me back like 2 times or so..nice conversation..I wanted for him to shoot or prepare me a video in his unique pastiche/crazy demented visual trademark styling, but he gave me the usual "not much time at hand" answer heheheh..but at least I had the chance to correspond with one of my idols!!! hehehe
First watched this three years ago. Bought the thing a year after. Still, every time i watch it i have to admit, "WHY MY SYNTH NO SOUND LIKE THEES?" Some men are just born to edit the fuck out of synths.
@Docipede Jexus is a pro, don't expect to make sounds that pro when you first buy a synthesizer man. He probably had a lot of practice on this thing before he made this video
@Docipede I didn't mean to say that it was your first synth, I meant to say that to get sounds like this you've gotta experiment with whatever one you've got. Even if you're a pro you gotta experiment with each one of your synths.
I just wanted to say something to all the morons asking for patches etc. : go fuck yourself!!! if you don't know how to program a synth, then you should not be allowed to own it. and keep in mind that nobody owes you anything. so stop crying and try to use some brain... otherwise sell it for a reasonable price. to jexus: nice work, really!
@johnrozzo: There's no need for making your point by being so rude. Well, you have a point but the Prophecy and Z1 are really not easy to program if you want to go beyond bormal sounds, so the question ins understandable.
Maybe an answer by Jexus, like "Sorry, dudes. Learn the stuff by yourself, I just want to show off." would make this point clear, too. ;)
@brownerthanu It's not really that difficult. The Prophecy is pretty easy to understand, because the engine is bog standard...the interface is the only road block, & is rather cumbersome. I think Yamaha's TX81Z tops the list of most difficult to work with. I still don't understand FM properly.
@z0hmz Yeah good point. I agree that the theory is not that difficult, it's the clunky interface that makes it laborious to program. I'm thinking about getting one again, and using an editor for creating patches. Then I can use the excellent knobs and 'the log' for performance.
@brownerthanu it'll never be the sort of synth that you can have a few beers & just play around. It's still worth getting one though, as it's a trully beautiful & powerful synth. I searched on & off for 4 years before I found one, & I'm never, ever going to sell it :)
@z0hmz: It was Yamaha's greatest commercial trick to sell their phase modulation synthesizers as FM synths. :)
Chowning's original paper on FM is a good introduction and demonstrates what a complex matter FM really is. If you don't know what Bessel functions are you won't get the full mathematics behind it but Chowning gives several basic examples how the parameters influence the spectrum of the sound. The rest is trial and error or using existing sounds as a basis for your own experiments.
Even though I'm not really into digital and virtual analog synths, I must say this synth sounds pretty good! It has it's own character. Though having a distinct digital sound, it sounds way better than a nord lead (I've owned a NL2), and this video made me bid on one on ebay.
protips: use FEEDBACK in mixer section for extra BAMP, check output level in effects to make sure volume is actually up on the patch, use the UTY menu often to splice up parts from other patches into frankenpatches. if you take time to learn details of this machine its one demonic beast.
Please do some tutorials - I am a bass player & I fell in love with this when I messed with one in a music store in 1996 & I finally got one a year ago but I cant make my own sounds & the manual is soooooo dull & incomprehensible
All these videos are great proof that like analogs were 15 years ago, the cheap old stuff on the pawn shop shelf is still all you need -- an artist can paint a masterwork with any brush at all.
Technically the Z1 should be a better synth, but something got lost along the way. Having owned both I think the Prophecy is the real winner. Z1 is still very powerful once you understand it and how to program it. Prophecy seems more punk rock though.
@theoriginalmrsm: Although both use "MOSS" technology there are surprising differences between both synths. The filters are pretty different and a lot of parameters are implemented very differently. Both the Z1 and Prophecy are great pieces of hardware with their own strengths character.
Nice demo - given me a bit more incentive to use mine - thanks - I was going to sell it - now I'll give it a reprieve.
Demo wise - I'd really like to here someone demo the acoustic models with an emphasis on realism and fooling the listener into believing they're really listening to sax, trombone etc, etc ...
One of the greatest mono-synths ever. Really....Shit is DEEEEEEEP. It was the first synth that I ever bought and it took me almost five years to figure out. NOT a good beginner synth. Actually, the Z1 is a polyphonic Prophecy...Also, the sound quality is PROFESSIONAL!It doesn't sound anything like an MP3..Don't know what you are hearing, man!
don't mind me, my hearing is so good its impractical, meaning I always am analyzing the timbres to the point where I pick stuff apart. I am also surrounded by analogs all the livelong day. While the Z1 and prophecy are cool little digital bastards, the sound engine is ancient, compromised by the technology available at the time. It's not a slight at all. It is awesome the same way a commodore 64 is awesome. you will never get realistic graphics out of it, but it still kicks much ass.
99 steps on a filter, it could have 400 and you'd still hear the digital steps. this would be a great synth if it had an analogue filter. or option b, a digital filter but an analogue LFO
I just bought a Korg Prophecy, not knowing very much about programming yet, this synth can be a real pain in the A** LOL! I bought it mainly for nice sLeads for house productions like the one here wich can be heard at 5.17min. Could you give some pointers on how to program sounds like these?
Or maybe upload that one patch, so I can explore the parameters? I hope you'll help me out as I need to be shown the right direction with my Prophecy.
That was really impressive. It made me wanna dig my prophecy back out and chuck all my virtual synths in the trash. I'm so sick of my CPU crapping out. Viva the hardware synth. I've spent every monrning this week tweaking again. Thanks for the inspiration. P.S. do you know where I can get some decent patches.
You have to get the rom updated in it. Unfortunately Korg screwed up when they first built this synth but there is a fix for about $100 or cheaper if you can install the rom yourself. See your local dealer for details. I paid someone to update mine and it works perfectly now. Awesome synth

Oh wow, at 4:11, that lead sounds so awesome. It would go great for a drum & bass track. What I miss about the Prophecy was the reed model and the square wave.
I had a Prophecy. The thing sounded so raw, but I never got around exploiting it. I played around a bit, but the audio outs were loose from the board, so I sold it on eBay.
