Very droll!! Somewhere around the halfway through the exercise she is getting a little distracted and may be bored. But again after a little encouragement from dad she is off again like a breeze.
Amazing , shocking .... Continue as normal till she associates the pictures with the names, then cover the names and see if she can tell you what the elements are just by pics, and vice versa ...write the names down on a different lives
Good job! Flash cards can make wonders. You can teach kids just about anything with this method if you spend some time doing it. They will however forget the knowledge in a matter of weeks if you don't keep at it!
She so cute don't worry about what people say there just jealous. I'm going to by those card for my daughter she just turned 2 on feb 19. She all ready knows her colors, abc, sight and song, and she knows how to count from 1-20 in English and Spanish. And some shapes. Keep up the good work.
My brother did the same thing but with flags. He could not read but he memorized the names of all the flags of countries around the world when he was a Kid. It's awesome. A pity that in 1991 we did not have a camera.
@dwees2 Can you explain, even to yourself, why you felt the need to suggest in this forum that this amazing 2-year-old child might find something "more productive" to do with her time? Or to mention, seemingly in passing, YOUR child's apparently phenomenal memory? And are you familiar with the symptoms of various borderline personality disorders?
I suggest you seek the help of a qualified counselor, sir. Your "gifted" son, and any other children you might have will thank you for it.
@mgtmol, is she familiar with the They Might Be Giants song about the elements? If she isn't already, she might get a kick out of it. (I tried to link you to it but YouTube won't let me. Just look up They Might Be Giants Meet the Elements).
@mgtmol, Take care of your daughter, she have such a great tallent, and if u keep teaching her she ill be a great woman! But never forget to teach her moral and etics!
obviously she is reading what is on the bottom of the cards.. so she can read,bt that doesn't mean that she knows each every elements.. bt should say that she is cute :)
Je m'incline devant cette petite parce que moi même avec les images ou juste les lettres qui les représentes je suis incapable de retenir quoi que ce soit xD She is so cute ♥
YES! More of us women in science!! Love the "sulfur's stinky" hook. Haha. "What's this card?" sees the plate "Food!" When my daughter began reading at 18 mos., I didn't realize it. She just did it. She was reading books by 3, then, adding three columns by 5--in her head! It took ME a while to accept her abilities. Folks "accused" me of forcing this on her (as if it were a bad thing to have a bright child)--but it was all her own doing! I imagine the same goes with Rose. Hooray for this family!
So cute - I love "Sulfur stinky!" I don't know if you have looked in to preschool for her yet, but I would recommend a good Montessori preschool! The Montessori philosophy is to follow the child. My sons are in Montessori and they love it, I think your daughter would do well too! Her natural love to learn the elements and her curiosity would be encouraged and grow! Good luck to you and Rose!
However she's recognizing these (hopefully it's by the letter and not the picture...though that's most likely), at two years old it's impressive none the less.
my little girl does the elements too!! This is so cool. My little girl counts them 1-10 (H - Ne), we are working on 1-18 (Ar)... Gotta learn how to count you know? I will put it as a video response once I capture it :)
I am really happy and proud of lil Rose, little chemical engineering in training!!
For a 26 month child to have developed visual association to that extent is astounding!! I congratulate the parents, you must be so proud. I cannot wait to have my own kids so that I can experience such moments in their development. I am sure Rose will grow up to be the best of the best in school and life :)
i applaud you as parents for actually treating your child like she could possibly learn SO much more if parents didnt treat them like... well... children.
@xxdiebleedburnxx We didn't "teach" her, really. She was first interested in her mother's book, which is by the same guy who made these cards, and her mom and I would read the book to her when she asked for it. She started asking for it a lot. I think her interest comes from liking the pictures. Then we got her these (easier to hold) cards instead, and when she asked for the book we'd break out the cards instead. We just give her a card and tell her what it is (if she doesn't beat us to it).
@Nancysissypants Having a bunch of flash cards of elements memorized isn't the same as an understanding of science. Ask her to identify those elements in any other context, and I'd be willing to bet she couldn't.
Still her memory is impressive. I was amazed at how quickly my son had all of the names of his Thomas cards memorized.
Maybe there is something more productive she could be doing with her time?
@Nancysissypants Totally agree. There's no way she memorized all those flash cards without spending a lot of time with her parents. I was just thinking that other stuff would be good. I was thinking stuff along these lines would be more valuable. Google "15 things kids can do instead of homework" and check out #1 hit.
@dwees2 This is something that she does for her fun, not something that we make her do. When we go to Target, she wants to go to the Schleich animal toys and the koosh balls. It's the same thing with seeing this box of cards at home. So we play with her for as long as she wants. Usually about 20 of them. She's also really into watching all the different versions of Tom Lehrer's elements song.
@mgtmol Yeah, I think it's good that you are supporting her interests. For me that's the important thing, as well doing this with her. She looks like she is doing great.
@dwees2 WOW - another pretend knowitall criticizing and acting arrogant about something as harmless as this. I pity your kid considering your esteem issues.
Okay, so she's memorized some bits. Still - mighty damn impressive, considering her young age. Hopefully, her parents have a big, sloppy, goofy love of all things science and she picks up on that and digs the enthusiasm. All said, beautiful young girl and the Pretty Pony t-shirt is rockin' like Dokken.
