  • What company?

  • Fantastic build quality. Any idea who made it?

  • What do you expect from the Swiss!!

The machining on the rods looks like what you would expect from the makers of the best watches in the world!!

  • did you see the size of the rod cap nuts. holy crap would i hate to buy that torque wrench.

  • OMG, i didn't think people cared like this anymore. superb engine. Glad i got to see it. thanks...

  • I guess they have to stop the engine to refill the rod oil cups.

  • what a pretty engine wow !!

  • @CADtekk I noticed that too.. Awesome notching.

  • @CADtekk i was thinkn the same thing,,

  • Is this the Neuchatel?

  • The Swiss converted many of their paddle steamers from steam to diesel. Recently they have been going back to steam using new built steam engines, beautiful.

  • I love a good steam bath session, but(t) never became fond of boiler explosions...go figure!

Those brass (?) automatic oilers, on the con rod ends, are jewels.

  • I have some video of my grass growing.

  • @oracle2world What's the bloody link? We all could use a laugh, lad.

  • @zuzulo56 - not my video, but here is one on YouTube:

    youtube.com/watch?v=LR-Eozbzf0U

People have too much time on their hands.

  • well maintained engines it seems, I love steam engines, less efficient but more practical ...I wish I could have a steam power generator at home. :)

  • geez theres zero clearance around those rods where theyve cut that steel stucture for them.

  • @tubestick00 You can still put a peice of paper between there, not close enough! lol

  • as cool as watching a swiss watch ,you never get bored of fine engineering

  • Beautifully made. I like the oilers sitting on the top. Nice vid!

  • dang... what size are those rod bolts? better question, who has a wrench to fit them?

  • Unbelievable as was done with taste and perfekcijom.Ova machine is a work of art, in which the ship is?

  • larger engines came first

  • so strong!

  • those two cylinders have oilers sitting on the con rod. you can see them good at about 0:23

  • The machining quality on that crank shaft is beyond amazing. Great video.

  • imagine if that thing threw a rod.

  • a work of art

  • Wow! So much torque - so many paddles per turn thrusting in the water outside, no gearbox, no reduction, I was captivated., all this video and in only 3 revolutions! Ahh steam; there's nothin' like it no more. What would it rev to?; 12 RPM?

  • No counterweight? Must run real slow/Operating RPM that is.

  • no way , did you see my under whare hanging out to dry

  • I love the old days of steam I am 52 and missed the old days but I like my microwave and my 2001 F250 4X4 auto, a/c disc brakes all around. So you can't have it all!!!!!!!!!!!! Steam was and is soooo beautiful and slow and sooo strong, but it takes a crew to fire it. Well I love it!!!!!!!!!

  • don't make me release the flying monkeys!

  • I was at sea for years with steamships and always were the engines absolutely spotless.Polished brass;buffed steel and soojied paintwork! The engineers knew how to run an engineroom in those days.No bullshit health and safety!

  • Look at the size of those nuts!

PS I hate kids, their voices ruin every experience.

  • @TheCottonTop Yes God dam always some bodys goddame kid that they dont shut up,little bastards. But I do love my 4yr old niece,to her I hung the fukin moon but.........

  • I wonder if the steam tugboat in Bombay is still operating ?

  • Very cool!

  • Real Horse Power !

  • @TerminatorFRA Torque u meen!

  • @820johndeere True, but slow and high torque engines gives just real horsepower for being used. Like draft horses ;)

Steam engines just fits perfectly to them.

BTW the engine you can see on the video has 900 hp approximately.

  • Wow... That beautiful, and makes all that power to boot... Like a beautiful woman who really knows how to cook...Just does not get much better than that !

  • However do they keep the cranks so shiny. One would be mistaken for thinking they were glass

  • That engine is a newly built recreation of the original I remember reading somewhere. So nice polished forgings and no oil cans necessary, stays nice and clean. I have been in a number of steam vessels with period engines, rough castings, steam leaks, dripping oil etc, they are not clean at all lol.

  • We have many of those old paddle steamers in switzerland and nearly all of them have the original engine! Only the engine of the "MONTREUX" was completely reconstructed, all the others are original!

Those engines are very well built and maintained, that's the reason they are so clean.

  • @EnigmaNZ1

On the many Swiss paddlewheelers there is only one new engine. All the rest are original from the early 20th century, made by Sulzer and Escher-Wyss.

  • ufff tremenda máquinaria cigueñal y biela saludos desde VENEZUELA.

  • Hi - beautifully clean. Ship is in steam, can hear the 3 chime steam whistle. These engines will go that slow when the engineer is warming through. The oil bottles are a nice feature. Cut out in the carlin might be an issue if it is structural...

  • thats not a ship steam engine starting! its getting turned over by a electric motor. shame they didnt steam it up :(

  • @bobstereo

What makes you think so? All of Switzerland's paddle steamers are steam-powered, except the few that were re-equipped with diesel-electric power.

You should come here and see for yourself

  • Lol huge oil drippers :D

  • It still amazes me just how clean that engine is. You could eat off those rods

  • @Mechknight73 lol, i wouldnt suggest it though...

  • @Mechknight73 Clean? It's polished to a high gloss! That's people who take pride in their work and machinery.

  • @Mechknight73 ha bet you swallow rods to! :D

  • @crazedwizardpro you're a fucking loser

shut up and enjoy the vid

  • @Mechknight73, not only you can eat off them because they are so clean...you could eat off of them while they are running to since they turn so slow....lol

  • @Mechknight73 probably not... someone might if they had the balls to do it without thinking of all the oil keeping it clean... most likely...

  • @paulmunoz Just lie to them and tell them it's olive oil lol

  • @Mechknight73 No homo dude. but yeah

  • @Mechknight73 You can eat off my rods too!

  • i want to see the wrench they used to take those rod caps off with

  • @soberbrent i already saw a wrench which was used for some parts of the "BigBoy" Steam locomotive and those were already impressively big

  • it needs the cutout or the motor would be siezed up

  • Soooo shiny......

    That is really really impressive.

  • The Swiss even have steins of beer on the connecting rods....How cool is that....!!!

  • More probably steins of lubricating oil, for the connecting rod's big-end :-)

  • @charlessmyth

    yep thats oil in them

  • love it

  • ja ja die schöne alte goete aber die maschiene ist mein ich jetzt auch schon raus ne ?

  • コネクティングロッド大端部のオイルカップ(?)がとってもクール

  • Whoever restored this engine did a fine job!

  • Super clean...Beautiful...Good to see appreciation of vintage steam engines

  • I live in that place. Every boat in this company (the only one on the swiss part of the lake) is steam powered. all come from the 1910s and such

  • PS Montreux's new-build steam engines 2001

  • Immaculate.

  • a gallon of xt in each lube pot

  • Very awesome! I love the bearing lubrication reservoirs on the end of the output shaft!

  • those engines as powerfull as the waverlys?

  • wow that certainly is some seriously heavy engineering and verry nice may i add its a credit to the builder(restorer)

  • I dare you to try and stop it. But please shut the kid up! Lovely crankshaft.

  • I want to see this thing at full steam!

  • watch?v=8I7cLXTsU48

I think that's the same engine

  • cool thanks.

  • can't be, look at where the crank arm comes up to the above wall, there's a rounded cutout to allow clearance. The other one doesn't need a cutout. The other might be by the same designer, but it's a different installation.

  • wow thats big oil cans for the connecting rod lol

  • it's a big connecting rod!

  • Holy... thats huge.

  • was in germany.... you could hear the voices

  • think of the size of the wrech for the con rods!

  • This kind of machinery are piece of art

  • is*

  • hmmm farari red must go fast the ship

  • Beautifully machined pieces.

  • My thoughts exactly. Beautiful craftsmanship.

  • Its Montreux on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. She was steam converted to diesel converted back to steam. This must be filmed in 2003/4 when she was still engine room control, she is now bridge control.

  • Holy hell at some rod caps..

  • ... this is not the engine for a 'boat'. This is a ship! Please, more information!

    Love, Janine

  • Allegedly the maritime distinction between "boat" and "ship" is that a ship can carry other boats, such as lifeboats and bigger

  • It has to be newly built, perhaps the new Swiss lake steamers.

  • ótima maquina!!!

  • What kind of boat is it in? A side wheeler?! That engine is so clean you could eat off it!

  • Must be a "stroker" See where they had to notch the block to clear the rod? I've done that, but on a much much smaller scale!!

  • Too short we need to see the rest of the boat. Good start go for more.

  • I can't stand it! it"s too CLEAN!!!

  • explosive

  • all we need is some titanic music

  • no we don't

  • Steam....there's nothing else like it!

  • that things huge!!

  • isn't from switzerland ? Cause there we have steam boats that look the same

  • its so big

  • Notice the cutout on the ceiling beam to accomodate the crank rod when it comes up to the top.

  • perfection

  • Nice engine, just way to clean, needs to work and get a little dirty.

  • Those engines are working a lot. We have a few of those old engines on our beautifull lakes and they run day by day. They are just very good maintained (Swiss perfection) ;)

  • very well maintained you mean :)

  • WOW awesome! Is it a cruise line ship?

  • This is the new engine built by SLM for the Swiss lake steamer Montreux - the first lake steamer reconverted from diesel back to steam!

  • and it sust fits! (LOL) see the cutouts for de rods in the deck! ha ha , oops, whel just cut a litle out..............nice engine do!

  • and it just fits! (oops!)

  • Start the titanic music!

  • Awesome! I love watching those big shafts turn.
