If Taiwan becomes independence, this will be a severe blow to the diginity, sovereignty and national security of China. It would send a signal to other provinces they may also choose to determine their own future, Eg. Tibet, Hong Kong, Xinjiang declaring independence, spliting our country. In US point of view, I don't think your govt can afford if either if Alaska or Haiwaii declares independence. As you see, sub-secession of a nation can never be tolerated.

You can argue about different opinion, but the fact is most countries in the world, including the United Nations and US govt reconise Taiwan as a part of China, under US one China policy, the PRC is the only legitimate government of China. The American civil war the broke out when Southern states declared independence from the Union to form the confederate government. Under the same reason, China will not allow secession and Taiwan to declare idependence.

Remember when the US military described this icident as a "misunderstanding" the Chinese foreign minister denined to accept this explanation? It shows the Chinese side has put up a firm stance against this issue. Maybe the Amercian media do not report as much depth as the Chinese media do, I won't be surprised if you have not heard about it.
