  • all you alienated physics majors who carry those huge chips on your shoulders should be out helping countries go to war according to the plot not trying to debate arbitrary points of view. That's the problem with all you scholarly people. Bunch of out of touch conformists who don't have a clue about the true psychology of humankind that you laude as having such great potential. And you wonder why nobody is buying what you're selling.

  • "Kepler's Laws?" it wasn't even wholly his discovery. But Carl Sagan thrived on that kind of immodesty. His accomplishment. Sniffing the thrones of people like Kepler.

  • People argue much about the existence of god because we do have a natural tendency to believe in him..so beyond a shadow of doubt God is the greatest

  • I love how he has all the candles in the room.

  • dad?

  • Didn't Hypatia discover the elliptical orbit first? Or Ptolemy? Why should Kepler receive credit, or am I missing something?

  • Thank you Carl for helping me through my amazing astronomy class :)

  • @HeyRuka

Highline college had taught a class totally based off of Carl Sagan's Cosmos series.

This episode was one of my favorites.

  • @iviewthetube So cool! I'd graduate with a 4.0 if Cosmos was a degree program. This episode was a god one, but it'shard tto pick faves with Cosmos episodes.

  • @HeyRuka

Ha, ha, I'm confident thaty you would get a 4.0 in astronomy; you seem to have a keen interest in it.

In addition to the Cosmos class the same instructor also taught another great astronomy class. Now he is retired so I don't really know how good the program is there now.

  • Reality takes tremendous imagination, patience, and analysis to comprehend. No need for supernatural nonsense; the adventure is in nature.

  • Fuck the 3 retards who clicked dislike! Oops, sorry, am I allowed to say the R word?

  • sucks he dead :{

    such a great man

  • Today we studied Kepler in my History of science class. I couldn't understand anything with that boring and unpassionated teacher. Why couldn't he explain things like Carl Sagan? Guess that's impossible... But anyways, thank you Carl!

  • @u2v3e My physics teacher sucks and doesn't teach us anything.

  • Is it really the Sun's center that's located at the focus? Or is it the barycenter of the planet-sun system?

For example, I think the Sun-Jupiter barycenter is actually located outside of the Sun's surface. So is the overall Solar System barycenter also located outside of it?

  • ...

Why is he surrounded by candles?

  • @EdouardDubois Seriously. Seems a little creepy actually.

  • @EdouardDubois lol that made me laugh so hard, like hes a wizard or wiccan or something

  • Commenters say the darndest things.

  • @dmh497 OBVIOUS TROLL IS OBVIOUS.

  • @Indoctrinhate You are wrong. I am sincere. I believe that the Earth is stationary. And I believe that Kepler may have been involved in the death of Tycho Brahe and that Kepler had a strong anti-Bible agenda.

I sincerely believe that this Carl Sagan character is deliberately lying about Kepler.

  • @Indoctrinhate

Do you have a source for any of what you have written. Also, we are talking about planetary locations. In that context, today, who cares about the Bilble? Are you interested in science? If so, I would think that the Bible would be the last book you would read to learn about the scientific method or about the history of scientific discovery.

  • @corsopoet You are addressing the wrong person. It's dmh497 you meant to reply to.

  • @dmh497 you read too much children books

  • @dmh497 Anti-Bible theory of heliocentricity?! Sorry, but is this the Dark Ages?!

  • @dmh497 Satan does not exist, witchcraft does not exist, heliocentricity is not so much anti-bible as pro-reality and i really really wish you people would not comment on these videos.

  • @Erech01 SERIOUSLY!!!!! @ all the stupid people commenting: We're trying to study SCIENCE and MATH here people!! Keep your bible thumping to your idiotic selves PLEASE and THANK YOU! And I pray to whatever goodness exists that you idiots let your poor children go to college... please?!?!?!??

  • @virginialikesyou Actually, without some sort of standard, who is to say what is good or not? Muslims have their Quran as a standard, it tells them what is good what is bad, Christians have the Bible. But atheist don't have a standard, so in their world no goodness can exist.

  • @dmitriboukalov actually, you are wrong, dead wrong. As the religions give you "standards" (or morality and diferent notions of good and evil) based on holly scriptures, and dogma, the atheists (most of them might i say) base their "standards" on humanism, that, not being a religion, or a dogma, states clearly that all men and women are alike, and that, reason, ethics and respect for all human beings is the right path to a "standard" way of life...

  • @JManuelFerreiraF Who states that all humans are equal, who made up this rule? Who gave them the authority to decide what is right and what is wrong? Common sense cannot prevail because common sense differs from person to person.

  • @JManuelFerreiraF All men and women are not equal in evolutionary theory, as whites are on top of the chain and blacks are on the bottom, with asians and medium colors and in the middle. This is one of the reasons for the Holocaust, as the strong (whites) kill off the weak (blacks). And since no good can exist in evolutionary theory, these actions can never be deemed as evil.

  • A correction to the epilogue: Kepler was the first known modern day person to spell out this observation.

  • Great video... anyone know what episode of Cosmos is was from?

  • the harmony of the world... i think it was the 3

  • Thats 1 smart mofo. How the hell did he figure that shit out w/o a telescope? Now people are to busy trying to pay bills/housing etc. Life sucks then you die.

You gotta go big if you want a place in history. life on earth is goin dew south.

  • From what I remember, Kepler worked with Tycho Brahe, who had made decades of very careful and detailed observations of Mars. He had to wait for Tycho to die because he wouldn't share his data.

  • carl sagan was a great man i'm glad his work lives on

  • Thanks! - GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • btw thanks for takin out your time for this vid, really appreciated

  • O shit sry

    wrong video, im rly sry

  • lol! must be utd fan!

  • I love this stuff . Now if I could make use of it in my mundane daily life , that would be awesome .

  • Very good video... is Sagan over stating when he says Kepler is "the first in the human species to understand correctly and quantitatively how the planets move" when Sumerian archeology has produced glyphs of the planets orbiting the sun?

  • No, this isn't an overstatement, in that Kepler is the first to understand that planets move at variable speeds in elliptical (non-circular) orbits. All the complexity of the older models (epicycles, deferents, equants) was washed away with the mathematical simplicity (and improved accuracy) of his three laws.

  • great program thank you.

  • Legend.

  • @GOAQ He was the evangelist of science - a worldview that, instead of ignoring the facts, embraces and actively seeks them out. And even if it was an '80s series, he left out Pluto!
