enjoy in this music. Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelsson's violin concerto and even Vivaldi makes a big "come back" thanks to Carmignola's approach of the Red Priest maestro who is still, today, a music reference....
All this is very interesting and inspiring but this music does not gather as wide an audience as rock music or pop music does today...because this is the music of today. Bartok stays, in my humble view, more intricate and more complicated than the great Beethoven who stays with a wider audience even after more than 300 years....It is just like Paganini who is listened to by a small gathering of "specialists" or violinists who want to improve their violinistic skills....what is left to really .//
It does sound bleak and morose....Bartok must have seen ghosts while writing this piece....The etheral and ungraspable by most of us and Beethoven is still the master looking on...and judging these crazy sounds of ours: unconsistency...Big trumpets in this first movement sound much like Bartok had to write somthing for them on the spur......
@jdemeulenaer123 Bartok is virtually unanimously looked at as one of the most important 20th century composers ... his string quartets are generally viewed as the most important since Beethoven's ... so, no, he didn't just "toss something in" for the trumpets. He was a master craftsman and worked over his compositions very carefully. I suggest a scholarly biography would be good reading for you.
.../..can express such joy... Even hearing Amadeus Rihm who wrote really crazy violin sonati, is just impossible to grasp... It looks like Vivaldi was the only "joyful violinist with Paganini who have played to surprise their audience...Is the human heart that bleak and mosose...? Dvorak's ninth could also be a "positive" composition...Do you think so..?
Fair enough, this is true that we hear differently. I have never been so crazy about this concerto.. I'll probably need more time to understand. Shoenberg is also impossible to listen to and enjoy. Although I can enjoy Henri Dutilleux' violin concerto and somtime, Shostakovitch...(although very deppressing music written under an oppressive régime... I do not know why in Vivaldi's concerti we find so much energy and joy and as we advance toward modern times, practically no one..../..
She's got flawless technique, very fine, smooth tone, but she could bring just a tiny bit more fire and improvisatory temperament to her performance. Listen to, for instance, Viktoria Mullova and Anne-Sophie Mutter and you'll instanty know what I mean.
A concert artist has 5-10 conertos under their belt that they can play from the top of their head, and that many again, that they know but pretty well but perhaps haven't played in quite some time. That's when they bring the written music with them. If they intend to play it several times in the months ahead they will will certainly re-memorize it so that they don't need the music.
She closes her eyes sometimes. I don't think the fact that she has a music stand there is such a big deal. I saw Zukerman play the Elgar Concerto which is very long and he has a stand. Also, I don't see the pages turning...so she probably just used it for one page.
@mshakhz It is so freaking hard to remember. It practically has no melody. A horrible piece of "music" It was probably written when Bartok had a few cognacs.... In my view, Henri Dutilleux' Arbre des songes" has much more to offer than Bartok in this noisy piece....

@jdemeulenaer123 Maybe you just had a hard time remembering it... I loved this piece, and find it musically pleasing. My first time hearing it was when I was 12 years old. I thought it was the greatest piece on Earth. I guess everyone listens to and interprets music differently.
Not all the greats can memorize pieces. Being able to memorize is not what makes you great. It's your ability to deliver the music in great fashion to the audience.
once you get to a certain level a higher standard should be reached...stands are a barrier and at times a crutch. If you know the piece well enough to play with a major symphony like this...you should have it memorized.
If you notice she hardly looks at her stand, so it certainly not her crutch. Also, I still do not see how memorizing music is a higher standard. I believe the ways in which you perform, deliver, and play the MUSIC is what should always be focused. Not something as trivial as whether a stand is in front of you or not...
I said she hardly looks at it, not she doesn't look at it. Just one mess up, and the whole piece could be ruined. Just think if she didn't have the sheet music in those rare moments when she did look to it for guidance. I think the sheet music is good actually. It's a reminder that the performance is about the music and the composer's message, not the performer.
these are valid points I think. Could it become a crutch? yes it could. Is it here? probably not. Could she have done it without the stand? probably, but she didn't. We can't know exactly why, but really, the delivery was great, I mean, listen without looking at the video. Maybe it's just that the stand is a distraction for us as the audience, as we expect that the soloist would have it perfectly from memory, when we see the stand, we start listening for mistakes, or even write the soloist off.
Everyone has a certain reason and as said above there's no page turning. she did on her Lalo symphonie performance. She turned the page every like 5 minutes it's more of a safety cushion
I will make a public apology here, I always thought of Marcovici as being on the Gin & Tonic end of playing, but I really like this Bartok. Thankfully she understands Bartok's accents so well, mind you they were not born far apart..
I'm a Marcovici's addict, i'm very happy of your apology, but i think she "undersands" very well many composers... look at her saent saens, Kox, Nielsen, 3 mov of Beethoven op 61, her Lalo and her Sibelius, beautiful sound and great intensity.........
Yes, well I agree now that I have heard more of her playing. Just listened to Beethoven. Very well nuanced, sensitive agogics and stylistically very pleasing.
In my opinion she have a great personality. And the use of sheet music is a subjective choise. Recently i have see a Bashmet's recital... he use always sheet music...
Silvia Marcovici has always played "very well." And she has a very inviting stage presence. Where she totally falls down is her lack of individuality. And what's with using the music?! The audience expects that an artist of her stature is going to have everything memorized.
Spectacular opening! The sound is great!
