I lived in Las Vegas from 1968-1970. What always boggles MY mind is my memories of walking down the strip and seeing so many VACANT lots and sand back then all the way up to the Hacienda. I watched them build part of the MGM. Just where IS this casino located ? - Bus service was terrible then. I was 16. I did a lot of walking on the strip. I tried to look around at the ruins of Las Vegas' first great casino fire, the El Rancho Vegas, but the guards wouldn't let me get off the street.
I was up there on those burned out floors. We security were doing 12 hour 7 day aweek shifts. We had 2-3 officers on every floor and Las Vegas Metro police were stationed in the casino. It was eerie. No people around. Made a ton of overtime pay. The fire was caused by welders on the roof. They dropped a torch and it set the facade on fire.
