@Smartboy8877- it means "the powers that be"...maybe "the writers" would've been simpler...lol
and contradictions like that are common on sitcoms, especially since this is the pilot. Many sitcoms had DRASTIC changes from their initial episode. Whatever happened to the gay cook from the pilot of the Golden Girls? lol
In the first place, thank you for the information about what the innitials stand for! On top of that, you are correct that the "Golden Girls" was terrible in terms of inconsistencies! There is only one series that I can think of that had more inconsistencies than the "Golden Girls". That series is the "Flintstones"! Wow!
I was not saying that the "Golden Girls" was a terrible show, I was simply making the point that they were terrible in terms keeping their stories straight. This includes situations about who was born when, who died when and who graduated from what school during what year.
Parenting (in my opinion) is the most challenging job in the world. Yet, it's rewarding. This episode is an example of the major challenges a parent faces tryingto give the best, teach the best, guide the best and it still seems to fail as your child tries to find their own way.

Gosh! I wish I had a fat black wench who has all life's answers to help me out. Its like she made of magic. I just want Neil to smoother me with her big black tities.
Sooo what's up with TV show moms? Why do they all DIE: Mrs.Andy Tailor, Mrs. Danny Tanner, Mrs. Rifleman, Mrs. Mike Brady, Mrs Jed Clampett, Mrs. Cheif Kaniski, and so on and so forth?
The comment that you made, makes no sense, If you watch the show you would understand that Nell ran away from home, she didn't want Katie to go through what she want through that's why she talked to Katie, but Nell knew that in the end in order to get Katie to learn what really was seperating her from her father, Nell still had to step back and allow Katie to choose, it didn't take Katie long to realize Nell was telling the truth.
I love shows from back then. Just lil things, like if that was filmed today peta would be all over them about the damn gold fish. The Bussing skit would ave never been in there.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired in late 81 or early 82 . Watching it now I see it was great writing .... I was moved. Cool living room.
Nell: First of all, you did not hire me; I volunteered. Now before you're wife died, I promised her I will stay around here to make sure you didn't do anything stupid. Well, today you win the medal of Dumbness
katie should totally get over her dad hiting her but she shoudent shop lift

Thank you for the information! And by the way, this is one of several contradictions that I caught during this series.

TPTB made a big mistake. Nell says that her father is dead here, but in just a few more eps., she goes home to visit him while he is dying.

@bluenail03
I also remember catching that contradiction. The only thing that I do not know is that TPTB stands for.

Nell mentioned that her dad died, but in a later episode, she goes to Alabama and makes peace with him before he dies. Blooper!

This looks like this could of been the start of a spinoff with Katie-which is ironic because this was the first GIMME A BREAK episode!
