@Skull24Crusher The throttle goes through a detent. I.E., the pilot has to lift the handle to go from "dry thrust" (no afterburning) to the afterburner range. The afterburner is not just a toggle, and there is a range of afterburner settings.

@Triplewave4 it's an Augmentor, not an Afterburner. It re-ignites with diverted fresh air that has not been combusted yet, which makes it an Augmentor. An Afterburner is when you dump more fuel into already combusted air and light it up again with no new fresh air, which makes it an Afterburner. The F-16 engine has secondary airflow to the back which it ignites with fuel for a boost, which makes it an Augmentor. These are used for speed boosts.

When the engine is placed in afterburner the nozzle moves from cone shaped to full open like it was at idle. You can't hear the "chirp" from afterburner to idle because of the noise.

@inthestands You confusing this one with a GE equipped one. That sound is from the CENC (Convergent Exhaust Nozzle Control) which is air driving on Pratts using 13th stage bleed air. The G.E. equipped ones have hydarulic nozzle pump instead and that does not make a sound.
