What memories. Les Kellett was my hero back then as a kid....and there is Brian Glover...wonderful! Of course it was all choreographed but they were athletes and well drilled. Great entertainment. Where iss the old dear with the handbag?
Wooooo!! Hahahahahahahah! Genius performances both!! X¬D So glad to see some videos of these guys. I had forgotten just way our whole family enjoyed watching the wrestling all those years ago. Hahahahahahahah! These guys were had comedy in their veins and the skills to match!!! Thanks so much for sharing.
Great to see - yeah so what with the hindsight of age we now know it was faked, but what great entertainment these guys put on .RIP Les and Brian and thanks for the laughs..
@JapStrangler: Glover had to fill in for a French wrestler called Leon Arras who didn't turn upto a bout and kept the name. He met the real Leon Arras some years later, they arm-wrestled for the name. Glover won, he reckons Arras let him win.
Colt Cabana has cited Les Kellett as being a major influence on his style and obviously Nigel McGuinness is known for using Kellett's classic rope tip-up, so in a way Les lives on.
Even though I grew up with WWF/E, I have an equal appreciation for this as well. It is a good antidote to the soap opera and repetitive American wrestling of today. I think in the American style the storytelling aspect has been lost for the most part, y'know like a wrestler stamping on his opponents hands or working a body part throughout the match. I like this as a (fixed) struggle between two grapplers, slow and steady but with a narrative that gets you involved. Also lol at the old dear!!
true, the only difference being ,the crowd were almost asleep as apposed to today where they are rarely seated, the wrestlers look like me grandad whereas today they are super fit athletes, and of course todays wrestling turns over billions in profits and the workers are worldwide heroes,. if you would have told the old timers in them days its fixed ,they denied it venoumously and you might get a slap, wheras today they are very open about that fact.other than that you are spot on there!
back then the audience knew it was fake - that was the gentile social attraction to the wrestling (unless you believe people really thought Big Daddy was unbeatable ? for example lol)
my opinion is the fans take it way more serious today because the audience (americans for example) are much more gullible and thrive on violence and a gung-ho mentality
i know you will probably think im lying here but i have been wrestling proffesionally since i was 16 ,im now 34,and believe me there is no one that isnt clued up nowadays ,we have to hit harder and take bigger bumps to make up for it,the internet tells people what goin to happen in matches sometimes weeks in advance ,and there has been many films in the last 10 yrs exposing us as entertainment,we are even classed as sports entertainers now
cont..... back in the day people believed it was real -FACT ,and you still run into people from this generation in crowds-old women etc who tell me that it used to be real when old les was knocking about, today its more soap opera and we follow storyines and people appreciate the drama and its alot bloody harder work to make a living than it was then-FACT, wrestlers back then kept it kayfabe ,and wrestling was very guarded, kellet took it more serious than anyone,& thats from people that knew !him
cont again...alot of people bought into that fat piece of shit big daddy being unbeatable ,i know its hard to believe but big daddy was over massive and people thought he was alegit hard man. belive me ive wrestled everywhere and met alot of the fans from this era, they belived it,not all,but probabbly 80%,dont get me wrong they would ask if its fake but even if these guys said yes the public only believed what they wanted to believe, thats why they are known as marks.
thank you for uploading this video i was to young to see my great great great uncle wrestle but my grandad told me he was one of the best at what he did r.i.p les kellett
Oh yes..the late great Les Kellet, always loved watching him wrestle..he could have fun with an opponent or he could get real serious with them! Wrestled well into miuddle age too! This match with Leon arris (Brian Glover) was a typical Les fun match! Brilliant!
Brilliant showmen, very funny (laughed out loud at 4.34!). Kellett was in phenomenal shape considering he was about 60 years old at the time (born c 1915).
I loved that man. Les Kellett was one of the great comics of the century and certainly the funniest in this bizarre theatre. Thank you so much for posting this.
This is different class to modern wrestling. No cages, no chairs, no steroids just good clean fun. Brilliant.
